Imthatguy builds a Toyota - SHOCKER! It's true. I'm stepping outside my comfort zone and building a Toyota. An F-Toy to be exact. With a combination of new and old parts I'm hoping to come out with something that looks the part, and performs the same way. So, here we go. A bunch of junk from my junk drawer and the internet arrived on my workbench. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...903/lQnFQI.jpg GCM is starting to get into printing little engines. As luck would have it, they're making a 22r. More importantly, they also make a mount plate for RC4WD's transmission, and a trick transfer case that drops to the proper size for a perfect 22r accurate drivetrain. No divorced transfer case, no driveshafts to fail, just great looking stuff. The first step is to remove the original input shaft and mount the GCM plate. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...911/sxJvwI.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...907/5v6HJM.jpg One the motor is attached to the mounting plate, remove the original output shaft and replace with the longer one to satisfy the new transfer case. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...905/4SOHgH.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...905/8gaFcF.jpg Once that's done, assemble the 3D printed 22r which slides directly over your motor. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...910/XQf0hG.jpg You can see above that I'm assembling the engine block with RC4WD scale-sized bolts for a little extra shine. There's no better chassis than the Bruiser for an F-Toy. Easy to braze to, looks the part and looks awesome with a set of Rummy'ed axles underneath it. Leaf sprung and just loose enough to flexxxxx. Here's a shot with the engine/tranny plopped on it. I'll build some mounting tabs and push it forward about 3/4 of an inch. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...905/ZRQrck.jpg And finally, I set up the front shocks. No springs inside, all for show, no go. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...911/Ag98qy.jpg More to come. |

Finally some updates. Holiday season is tough. So many parties. My work alone has two! Anyway, I got around to making some mount plates for the engine and trans and transfer case. I'm pretty happy with the position, just need to order the pesky chassis cross brace so I can firm up the rear mount. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...903/n4hhEg.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...908/xGMXyh.jpg Thanks to GCM, the alignment to the driveshafts from the outputs is nearly spot on. No off centre weirdness here. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...910/ZxRvvQ.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...910/R3AsGr.jpg Tons of clearance on the under carriage. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...908/JbiJm3.jpg Now that the basic mechanical bits are sorted and I know where the motor is going to be, I can start on the tubes! I started by drawing up my base in Illustrator and printing it out to scale. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...905/tUXqDz.jpg Then, I simply bent some 3/16th brake line to match my template. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...633/yXwjqq.jpg Hooray! Nice and square, and I only wasted 18 feet of tube to get it right. You can see how it's going to be pretty flush with the frame. A few down tubes, top tubes, cross members and a cartoon dog figurine and I'm done. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...907/WynDsO.jpg With no thanks to my junk drawer, Chino hooked me up with a new set of his very famous, and very awesome leaf springs. Worth their weight in platinum. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...911/hSYpWJ.jpg More to come! |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Toyota - SHOCKER! Looking good sir! Glad the springs made it across the border. "thumbsup" I'd like to know how those tires work for you, I was contemplating those for my RC4WD Cruiser build. Love the Bruiser stuff, I have a ton here sitting in boxes that needs to be abused. Only gripe with the Bruiser axles is the steering angle limitation due to the dog bones... I fixed it. ;-) http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b2...206_151045.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b2...206_151105.jpg I need me one of those printed 22R motor covers. |
