Sucks about the slider.. How's that salt trick work? Sprinkle on where you want rust and paint over the top?

Yeah bud, so here the steps:

paint your rust layer

Put water down where you want the rust to show through.

Pour salt onto the water (again where you want the rust to show through) and let it dry

Once dry paint the next color

Brush off and/or rinse off with hot water.

Repeat for the rest of your color layers
(Wet, salt, dry, paint, remove)

Seal with a matte clear coat.

Just went through this for the first time. Amazing stuff. I'm very jelly. Just started a TF2-based truggy with Scrunch, but it will be much less ambitious. Anyway, we definitely need to get together for a run after the holidays, and you must bring this. Maybe pick a spot halfway...

Really nice job, I've started to get annoyed with all of the toyota trucks...but this one stands out in everyway, makes me want my own!! Nice job!

Hey bud, I'm sorry I just saw this post. Yes Todd's plates are the jam. I have another set for a wroncho build which I'll jump into after I get the YJ and Pile of Junk completed. I just can't bring myself to start another build at the moment.

What did you use for the winch cable?

I used the MadDoggRC upgrade kit, which came with the winch line.

-- UPDATE --

So it's been a little while since I updated this thread. I figured I should pop in and show what I've been up to.

I tore it all apart and brazed the cage back together. I addressed both sliders and a few other areas. The joints aren't perfect, but they'll hold. I'm happy for my first attempts at brazing.

Little paint and we have this.

Detail shot of a couple of the joints. Not horrible.

I put it back together and took it out on Sunday with our Cub Scout den. Here's a couple of shots.

I did get a couple video clips which I need to edit together and post up. I'll try to get to that in the next couple of days.

I have repaired the phone, though I'm not super stoked on it. I think I'm gonna build another one.

Cheers!

-- UPDATE --

So we have the GCM Adventure Series coming up this weekend and the Truggy needs some attention. It's been putting in work, and has taken a bit of a beating.

Broke the stinger off the $14 Chinese bumper.

The cab and the paint have taken some serious hits...

These two are pretty deep...

The rear stinger is now "formed" around the tire. LOL

Ok let's get going...

Off the bat here's the punch list

- replace all of the lights with new LEDs. The others are either burnout, too hot or glitchy. So they all go.

- add tail, back up and hopefully good lights for nighttime adventures. The lightbar's position is horrible.

- rock lights?

- repair the paint on the cab

- replace the passenger side mirror

- add the radio antennae

- replace the brake line on the rear

- front brakes and lines?

- replace the bumper

- exhaust

- touch up the interior paint

- sun visors

- CB

- dash and tach lights

- replace the phone and light

- repair the cooler and the esc mounting/fit

- dollhouse the interior

GO

Interior is broken down and the CB and new led for the phone are in.

The wiring under the dash/interior is a mess.

Ripped all of the lights, wires and dividers out. The tach isn't playing nicely. Had to break, I mean remove, the tach and drill out the bulb and the tube.

New LEDs and tach installed.

Working on a new phone. Trying a different technique. We'll see...

Sun visors are in paint.

Antenna is in. I used liquid tape to make the grommet.

Shoe Goo is drying on the lights.

More to come...

The so called bad spots of paint on the cab just adds effect to the paint job.

I agree, and it's why I put in so much work under the paint. I'm not gonna repaint it, but rather massage the body and add a little rust here and there on the bare spots.

Man oh man! I just went through this entire build on a search for pinching the nose of the TF2 body I just bought. Mad props on your skills man, I may be hitting you up for some pointers on some of your work.

Where do you buy your styrene? Do you just get it offline? And you said you bought the stuff for the rust from Hobby Lobby right?

I have an uncle that lives in Charlotte so next time I go to visit I would like to see this rig in person.

Glad you dig my little truggy. I’ve been driving the wheels off of it. Definitely not a shelf queen.

I get my styrene from all over, online, LHS etc. if you’re ever in charlotte hit me up.

Cheers!
