Default Old Blue (Memory Lane Build)

My first 1:1 truck was a 1986 F150 5.0 V8, standard cab, Midnight metallic blue, short bed, 4x4. I beat on the poor old truck as only a teenager could, and finally sold it for something that got better than 10-14 mpg.
(Not my truck)

JConcepts just released the 1984 F150 body, which is the same body style as my old 1:1. So as a throwback to my old F150 and what it could have become...

Its on order now.

I am on a tight budget, I can spend about $100 a month.
The plan is to build a truck as capable as the wife's scx10 with smaller tires.

Axles...
I have rc4wd d44 housings that need to be completed for approx $160.
Or I could pick up Ssd's housings for $50 and bolt on a bunch of stock parts to get me started.
3 link +pan hard up front, leafs out back.(owned in parts bin)
Stock scx 10 axles sitting in a parts bin.

Tires...
I have a set of 2 sets of axial bead locks,
A full set of lightly used 4.3" tsl's or 4.5" rock beasts.
Depends on the size of the wheel wells.

Links...
Home made using revo rod ends and 8/32 all thread, and stainless tubing.

Servo...
Probably a Hitec 5646, I don't mind not having a lot of steering power, I think the truck drives a bit more realistically.
Or solar 772

Drive train...

Front motor, bolted to a Hpi GRU, axial trans as a transfer case.(owned)
Traxxas metal yokes, stampede driveshafts.(owned)

Electronics...

HH BLE? 2s or 3s
Or Brxl? 35t on 3s
CC bec.(owned)
Brushless puller, 2200 kV on 3s or 3300kv on 2s
I have both 2s 4000mah shortys, and 2200mah 3s packs.

Leaning towards the BLE 3300kv combo. But at nearly $300 it might take a while.

Frame...
This I am scratching my head on.

Scratch build out of 1/2"square tube? $4
Stock scx? $65
TSS? ?
Scratch out of 1/8" alumnium? $10
Other options?

Checked with my lhs, 2 long weeks to wait, mid February, before I get my body.

The d44's...

Oh this looks like it will be a fun build and but don't let it end as a shelf queen..
I would start with a 1/2 square for frame as it's cheap and will get you going. You could always change up later if it don't work out. I'm also liking the SSD under the Ford with custom links and use what tires you have.
I just installed my first BL system in my wraith and unless I can get a few things figured I suggest staying with brushed. For the price and how smooth they are you really just can't beat it.

Side note: Any plans of a group run?

No such thing as a shelf queen. But I did order 2bodies to have one as a runner and the other as a pretty body.
I am leaning towards the 1/8 aluminum, as I have a length already. And its incredibly light, about half the weight as steel. I am shooting for 5lbs rtr.
I might rob my 650 for the brxl just to get this truck running, we will see. I am happy with the brushless in my twin hammers so far so I might still go that way.

One of the best preforming tires I have are just sitting on a shelf right now, pro line TS L's. And small enough for what I want.

I am down for a group run any time I am not working except for Sunday morning.

This camera sucks!

Rear axle is complete, got to wait on the new housings a bit. Ud gears, Hh spool, stock housings and shafts.
Trans is fully built. Robinson gears an VP case.
Front is stock with MIP cvd's , still need the 4little screws the hold the locker together.

Right now the the leafs are just screwed into the housing. I have some angled blocks to use when I get to that point. On the frame side I have some high lift mounts, if those don't work I will make some out of aluminum.

The wait is killing me. I talked to my lhs yesterday and they say the body is now on backorder but still no date. Its kind of hard to set a wheelbase without the body...

I really hope the J Concepts body is similarly sized to the Hpi body...

Rpp for the win, body and housings on the way along with scale hubs.
Kept the order at the lhs, so I will have two bodies when they finally get it.

Got my stuff, yay!
The body is everything I wanted! The bed is incredibly detailed, stake pockets moulded into the bed rails, textured bed floor, like it was designed for a drop bed, wheel wells are sized for a 4.2" tire, no bumpers moulded in(yay), radio antenna base , fuel doors ect. In other words a very detailed lexan body. Full tire coverage, the tires on standard axial axles with narrow hexs fit under the uncut body. Oh and the sticker sheet has the right grill!
Paint will be silver inside(mine was a rust free Ca. truck) black lexan paint(primer) and metallic blue (rustoleum) got to spray a test piece first though.
The Ssd axles are fantastic looking!
I also picked up a gen 1 Rx8 for a steal.

I've been wanting to see a set of the SSD and now I'll finally get to once you get this done and out.
Whats your plan for bumpers?
