Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Ta Da! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/CXjm5y.jpg It's here, and it's amazing. Getting started with a first look video: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oC_ivBbcOOs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Much more to come. Detail photos and initial assembly impressions will follow in this thread. Much thanks to Axial for providing the Honcho RTR to be the base for this build. |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Very nice, I'm sure you will do some super cool scale stuff with this. As for the two piece body, I can only hope to guess we will see a Comanche version of this soon. |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Some of the best box tapping I have seen yet! Also, they beat you cutting the body in half, they must know their scale stuff, that is a "pro builder" technique. |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Can't wait to see what you make of this! |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Might I suggest tossing the front half, and basing your build on the rear half only. Like a reverse truggy. |

Okay, time for picture overload! Starting with how the body parts connect to each other. You can see the seam quite clearly, even after firmly affixing both parts. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/unFYQU.jpg Lots of tiny Philips head screws and nuts to affix all the parts. It'd be nice if it were hex, but I wasn't expecting it. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/wGPSfS.jpg More screws. Weird that there isn't any screws affixing the top part of the rear hatch. Luckily, styrene glue works an absolute treat. Unlike some other recent hard bodies, you'll have no trouble putting other pieces of styrene on top of this, if you're looking to do custom work. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/BwMKSh.jpg In affixing the rear bumper assembly, the instructions call for a screw right through the rear panel. Seems odd that they couldn't come up with a better solution. I opted for scale hardware for now, but will probably screw in from behind and fill the hole. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/aBfhI6.jpg Front bumper has a nice slot/tab arrangement under the front clip to firmly place itself. Nice. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/zdl5WI.jpg Great details on the door handles and mirrors. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/vP5AEF.jpg Light buckets and lenses are really nicely detailed. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/maSmgP.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/mYCutB.jpg Another odd thing, in affixing the fenders, a screw through the panel again. I'm looking at a few different ways of solving that - maybe different fenders altogether. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/tYiqmi.jpg On the Honcho! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/jT24T7.jpg Wheelbase is spot on. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/oWifUg.jpg With fenders: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/YBdYWB.jpg Without (could be cool for a comp-cut look): http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/oOA5NG.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/45mxr1.jpg And with a simple tire change, pretty easy to get a tuck. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/YUS3BC.jpg More to come. |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Definitely excited to see where you go with this. |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Nice video my brother! I didn't know you were such a handsome fella lol. My first and last 1.1 trail rig was an Xj. Tuff, dependable rigs. I'm going to need a couple of these. Send me a link please"thumbsup" |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Sweet build. I really like body… but I like jeeps, especially Cherokees. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. You could probably hide all those exposed screws on the body with some wood paneling. http://www.curbsideclassic.com/wp-co...15-063-950.jpg |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. For the love of all things scale......DONT put wood on it. I'm sure a little nOOb mek paste/concoction would do the job. |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Oh lordy that's a hot body! For *only* $160 it seems worth it. Got a link to the site where I can buy one? Might need to buy a second SCX10 to mount it on too...hmmmm |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Nice Body,...I will follow carefully this post |

Okay, some inspiration coming at you for what I plan on doing to this perfectly good Jeep. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/OG8rh8.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/57a7Mc.jpg Just imagine no front doors. And maybe no rear doors. Chassis work is started as well. GCM transmission re-location kit, transfer case, Pro-Line Powerstrokes, and a SBG 3D printed cheap alternative to the cantilever kits currently on the market. SSD axle housings are next, and maybe some new links. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/4115Rp.jpg |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Check out this website for inspiration http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...5ceb027cf8.jpg http://www.davisautosports.com/ My buddy just ordered one from these guys. Swiped from M8 with RooT privileges |

Oh man, I've already started cutting up a perfectly good, brand new body. Whoops. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/4jbLfy.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/dRYdmN.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/7GPPuT.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/ModSmr.jpg You can see I'm experimenting with some bends to get the idea of where things are going to go, metal-wise. Yes, I like wasting tube. Wheels courtesy of my box of wheels under the workbench. Originally from GCM. They're nice. I'm always a sucker for black wheels. Always so badass. The original truck *might* have stretched it's wheelbase. I could go for that. Much more to come. |

Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Some new progress on the bumper and rear tubing. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/PBSoaZ.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/NpM2Ej.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/lyh96h.jpg I'm really chuffing my own gulliver with this brazing stuff. |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Pretty bold chuffing your gulliver here for all the world to see.... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. You shouldn't chuff your Gulliver in public. |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Oh this is looking very naughty! |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Forget your Gulliver, I want to chuff that rear end!! Nice work. |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. keep cutting, it still looks like a jeep |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. So wait where did you get this body or more importantly where can I get one. |

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/9L6Iv3.jpg Some more metal work. 1/4" square bar functions as some heavy metal sliders. I built the mounts into the existing slider mounts that Axial provides. Easy. Definitely going to extend that wheelbase. Now on to fun stuff. Front bumper and then I begin interior styrene work. |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Killer work and body! I'm gonna sub, and cook pop corn and wait for an update... Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk |

I spent today revising the wheelbase. I added way too much length the first time around and it looked so weird. Much better now. Matches the reference nearly perfectly. I opted for plain old milled steel rod. That way, they'll rust and get cruddy over time, which appeals to me greatly. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/Ei2cLT.jpg Bumper for bumping. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/hl8ZL6.jpg Simple, but effective. No need to get crazy with stingers and junk. I'm not going to the mall with this turk. And yes, top link in the front needs to be shortened. |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Updates? |

Thanks for following! |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. Very nice body, I like the way you are going with it! Is that a smaller diameter rod on that "stinger" then the rest of the bumper? If, IMO it looks a bit tiny. But that just me! :) Looking forward to next update! |
Re: Imthatguy builds a Cherokee because he hates Jeeps. doesn't look crappy enough. rust the rockers out and the bottom of the doors. don't forget the hatch.. and the fenders. oh.. and paint it red. rose red like a lot of Cherokees that are rusted out. tube work and bumping tubes look good. |

The update we've all been waiting for! No? Well, it's the update you're going to get, and like it! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/a0d5HL.jpg After a weekend of finally having some time to get back into styrene work (which is the best kind of work), I managed to wrap up the tough stuff like the rear fenders, interior floor, and firewall. And with that comes primer to check for low spots or rough body work. There's a bit of that here and there to repair, but I'm quite happy with the initial results. The comp-cut rear looks pretty cool, and after sourcing some proper sized tube, I put together the tail lights. Front fenders also got a mild trim. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/XhY9R4.jpg I'm pretty keen on these new Incision 1.9 Method's. I sanded and buffed the outer ring to give them a bit more dimension and I'm pretty chuffed at how they look on this build. Originally, I wanted to go for a slightly older JK-style wheel, but these turned up and knew they'd be right at home. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/921/peIYwP.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/ZEross.jpg Interior is sparse but appropriate for a purpose built vehicle like this. I *should* probably do an interior spare tire in the back, but we'll see how I feel. I'm not even sure I'll put in all the windows. Maybe just windshield for this one. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/dXmrJO.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/3jiSwx.jpg 3D printed interior add-ons from Ryan Luna fit pretty well, but required some minor trimming due to the way my interior works around the SCX10 frame. Some Vanquish steering bits and VVD's help make the steering work a bit better. More to come. Open to suggestions on color. I'd like to keep the metalwork as-is. Black. |
