Played around a little more with the bug over the weekend. And by playing, I mean painting. And by around, I mean another color.

OHH SNAP!!!

You should've seen your face! You were like "...but ohh Reflektr, you sly dog! I thought you were sticking with copper! Sad face..." And I went and pulled a rabbit out of my hat and went all "Herbie goes green-bananas" on you.

I'm not going to lie, I didn't really like it at first. It's not blue like my other toy-trucks. But then this happened:

Whiskey J digs it!

Lumberjack Jesus digs it!

I even got this clown to get off of his non-existent-ass and help out...

I'd say he did ok!

Drivetrain parts should be here this week, and in the meantime I may work on a set of sliders and a spare tire carrier. More to come!

Since this bug will more than likely be driving on rocks, I thought it may be wise to give it some groovy-looking sliders!

Totally tubular! And totally simple. Just like this build. Yes...

It sure was nice of STRC to make these little dealies you can stick things in.

A-HA!

Wait. No... That can't be right. Knock it off ya leg-less buffoon!

This is much better.

I still have to measure and make a few marks before welding, but you get the idea.

I finally got my tranny, and I'm still unsure on the location and that ridiculous power plant it's bolted to.

I decided to go with the full Hot Racing scx10 tranny for simplicity and durability. It seems like a high quality item Clark. All I did was take 'er apart, grease 'er up, and add some loc-tite. Good.

Here's where simplicity leaves town to go live with her "roommate", and complication moves in for the kill.

Not sure if you can see the top of the spur gear in this picture. It may be a longshot, but it almost looks like I could fashion some type of bench seat that would fit well and cover that up. Only problem with that is I'm saddled with the nasty driveline angles of a stock scx10...

I got tired of thinking about that so I moved onto more fun activities!

So while I was cleaning my garage, I found this partial Bruiser dash assembly and thought hmmm...

It's a wee-bit too wide, but with a little trimming it just may work.

Yep. Not too bad...

It's been awhile since I've updated this so I figure I'd better get back on it, right!? Right. Or wrong. Depending on how you look at it...

I've been having some issues with a few things - Which given the overall stature of the body, and what I'm trying to do with it, I never expected any less.

First up on the list was getting the thing mounted. Since they don't make Sand Scorcher body mounts for short wheelbase cwalrers with Vee Dub bodies, I did. Kind of. With stuff. Let's take a peek!

I found these little gems at our hobby shop's fire sale. They are actually Yeti steering posts.

And I snipped these crude little brackets out of 16 gauge black iron and drilled some holes.

Fastened them together with some screws...

...and screwed them into pre-existing holes in the STRC chassis.

May not have been the best way, but it seems to be pretty solid. I realize you can see the screw heads, but I'll take them over posts and pins any day.

The tires are by no means half-covered, but I'm ok with that seeing how this build is primarily just for my own twisted amusement. Let's keep on truckin'! Err... Or I mean Dubbin'? Yeah. Oh, and by the way - I put different tires and wheels on it. Yay change!

With the body stuck in place I was able to whip up these cute little dealies.

After all, what Bug would be complete without a pair of rock sliders...

Nice and snug. As a bug. In a rug.

Thank you sir! So far it hasn't been too bad. Toughest part's gonna be finding a home for that servo behind that stubby little schnoz

Put tires and wheels like the Yota on the Bug and suck the sliders in right up next to the body like where you had just cut the long piece! Overall I'm diggin it! Dig it, Dig'em the Sugar Smacks cereal ftog, lol.

+1 on the sliders. I'm liking it though. Good progress.

This does place the pan hard fairly close to the servo horn in my case, I am not running stock scx10.2 links. I had to make a panhard out of 3mm rod. I will be changing the servo horn and adjusting things for bit more clearance. It just barely kisses the horn currently.
This wont help you on this build since you are almost done, but it may help others. I had toyzuki make up a transverse mounted servo plate for my scx2 scion build. Its nose is super stubby just like all the bugs I have built. Makes it much easier to place the body on the chassis where you want it.

Thank you all for the comments and input! I greatly appreciate it. I finally found a home for the servo, but the only place it didn't interfere with anything was on the front axle... The real joke's on the scale-police though because you can barely tell it's there due to how everything came together. I slept pretty good that night. Onward!

Not a screaming amount of progress on this goofy little rig, but at least now it's drivable. Which means it's testable. Which means I can break stuff. Which I did... Bless my heart...

I normally don't make a habit out of breaking stuff because well, I'm a mechanic. And mecanik's daont brake stuf. Thay fix. Yes! Anywho...

For the first time ever, I decided to go brushless.

I had to go with the stubby due to my bent lower links and stubby stature. Because 10-1/2" wheelbase. And since I'm taking a gigantic leap into the future, I figure I'd power it with this:

So far it's a neat little setup. I mean it did this before I even got on the rocks!

I'm definitely not proud of breaking stuff (...and technically the motor did it, not me...) but that's pretty impressive. Moving along now!

While we're on the subject of whoopsies......

Whoops...

The dremel got away on me again. Still undecided on the fronts, but we'll see where this goes.

Still have much to do as far as appearance goes, but it's a runner!

I would trim the front fenders about half off with a inward slope toward the front of the rig. Like the new tire and color

Glad to see this coming along. You should know better.

Ya gotta upgrade the driveline before you add more power.

I'm digging it man.

Thank you! Yeah I'm thinking this color is the winner

I couldn't wait either! Much nature to be had today!

Thanks man! I had to laugh at this. And you're right... I thought I did know better when I built these axles almost a year ago

You know how it is... I honestly thought I installed the better axle shafts, because I'm a one-and-done kind of builder. Boy was I wrong

Onto the good stuff!

Well I took the Bug out for a shakedown run at the park this afternoon! It took a bit of getting used to with the super-short wheelbase and the brushless Puller, but all in all I'd say it did very well.

Onto the pics!

This thing is an absolute blast to drive. It's pretty nimble, and it's small stature allows it to squeeze through the gnarly stuff with ease. The bent lower links were a very good idea...

It's not quite done yet though. I still have to fab up a front and rear bumper and see what I can do interior-wise. On with the show!
