Project "Finally Started" Hilux Truggy

Well It's finally started. Since i got my SCX10 back in 2012 and after looking through hundreds of threads on RCCrawler.com, i have wanted to build/buy/have someone build, some form of a truggy. I attempted to make a roll cage and bumper with solid rod and a MIG welder... I failed, well i made them, but they weren't pretty. It was just to difficult to make a pretty weld with such small joints. (Atleast at my welding skill level).


I didn't have the money to have someone build me a custom truggy cage, so i just continued to use the Honcho body and cage. Soon after that, school and work and my other hobbies consumed all my time and money. About a year and half ago my brother bought a SCX10 Dingo and so i bought a Hilux hard body, thinking i would find the time to get back in the hobby.. That didn't happen. So still all my R/C's sat.


Well things have kinda settled down, I've been done with School for 2 years now and i after a second job since then, i think i am at one i will be at for awhile. My other hobbies (SxS Offroading, Drag Racing and Computer/Servers) still consume most of my money, but i can find some to fund my R/C's again.


I decided to try my hand at building my own cage, this time using Brazing instead of Welding. It looks much easier to get clean, nice looking joints. I found a cheap little torch set at Menards that uses Oxygen/Mapp Gas, i ordered some Flux/SafetySilv and some 3/16th Stainless Rod and got started this weekend.


So enough rambling, on to the progress pics!!


First off is the torch set i found:





Then i needed to figure out a way to mount the body, so i started with this:



Figured out where i wanted the body to sit and added this:







Then i started the roll bar around the back of the cab:




The bends aren't the greatest.. I need an actual bender.. But it turned out alright.

After the i started adding the rear support:










So far i'm pretty happy with the way it is turning out. Brazing is much easier to get a clean joint, that is as long as you make sure to fisheye the tubing and get at nice tight fit.


I'm just about out of tubing already, so gotta order more of that.

Not much more done.. But i got a place for the tool box to be mounted!






I plan on putting the battery in there. That way i don't have to find a easy way to have the body removable to change the battery.

Got more rod earlier this week, but haven't gotten time til today.. Went to go braze some more tubing and my oxygen tank was empty... Not sure if i didn't get the valve closed all the way or if the cheap torch just leaks. So off to Menards to get more oxygen.










Thats all i got done tonight. Hopefully next week ill have more time to work on this. But its coming along nicely.

Looks good man. I like that you made it completely bolt in that's a nice feature if you want to change things up down the road

Thanks! I figured i would be making a V.2 at some point once i got the hang of it, so i wanted it to be completely separate from the frame rails.

I think you've done pretty well, bends included. I am still on the fence about buying a torch setup - seems like a slippery slope for me.

Got a little bit more done tonight.

Got the shock mounts started:







I didn't think this through... I was going to tap these holes, but now i can't get to them....



So i'm going to leave the other side off for now and hopefully i can still get a tap in there.





I'm contemplating redoing the rollbar. When i put the Reign Cab back in place and make the body tight around it, my sliders and rollbar don't line up or match at all.

I know my sliders are the same, so when i center the body on the sliders the roll bar is way off from being center.

When I mounted my ford body I added a set of plates that sit on top of the slider that are drilled and tapped, that way you can use the factory tamiya holes and just run screws into them

That build is looking awesome. How do you get the truck outline for the roll bar area? Do you make a template?

Thanks! Nope, just started at one side and started bending. Didn't turn out the best, but for the first.. err second attempt.. I got the bends kinda right.



So tonight i got the body mounts cut out and brazed on. Now i have a good way to keep the body centered on the sliders.



Which brings me to this... 2 steps forward.. 3 steps back. I said screw it with the rollbar and removed it.

Here is the new one:















I like these lines much better


I'll cleanup and reattach the rear section tomorrow.

More progress!!

Got the rear section reattached to the rollbar.



Redid the toolbox mount




Bolted the axles on for mockup and to see how it looks so far.












Then i got started on the front bumper









That's all for tonight.

I did get some different glues and body putty so i can start on the body work. I can't decide if i want to bob the front or not...

Also, got an SSD axle housing and some wraith chubs.. for reasons

Looks good man! The main roll bar bends are always irritating. On your next one you should make your roll bar so its above your roof line, so when you roll it hits the bar and not your roof.
