Cheebus - A Portal 80

Been a while since I've had a build thread on here. Been wanting a new truck, but nothing has really caught my interest. I have had RC versions of every Toyota truck I have owned and when I saw this body, I knew what my next build was going to be.

An 80 series Land Cruiser!




Waited a very long time for this body to arrive. Was very happy when it did, safe and sound. This shell is huge! The detail is great. Well worth the money.


The Chassis is from RCMODELex. It is their ARB LC80 chassis. Welded ARB Bumpers front and rear. It is an extremely nice frame.






For the axles, I decided to ditch the standard Yota axles and go portals.




Wanted the Mad Moose portals, but these were less than half the cost. Maybe in the future I will step it up to the Mad Moose Portals.

Looks like a great start to a cool truck. I have been eyeing that body for my ascender, but think it would be alot of work to get it to fit. Definitely following this build....

Edit... found the website. Think I have found my next project. May see if i can make this work with a SCX10 ii kit.

This body has a 12.3" wheelbase so it's a drop on for the scx10ii.

Great start and should be a fun one with portals. You'll need to trim the fenders for sure.

Took some time today and threw together the axles.



Dug some Powerstrokes out of the parts bin. These may not work for this build.



Gmade beadlocks wrapped in RC4wd Compass rubber.



Now to put it all together!

Fitting the bumper to the chassis began with chopping these huge bumpers off.




The body came with mounts that slide into a stock SCX10 chassis. Convenient for those that choose to go that route. After cutting the bumpers you still have these pockets in the rear of the body that key into mounts on the frame.

Mounting the rear axle to the chassis was pretty straightforward. The front I decided to run a 3 link. The first issue was the front axle needed to come forward a hair which left little room for a panhard. I ended up modding the chassis slightly and moving the servo forward to make room.



I used a tlt suspension mount to locate the panhard on the chassis side temporarily. I will eventually braze a more solid mount to the chassis.

You can also see in the pics I switched to Rock Beasts. The Compass tires were just too big.

Really like the way it is coming together. The Powerstroke shocks seem to be a good fit for this body. I like the size of the Pitbulls as well.

And a pic for reference. The original Cheebus. My old FZJ80 that was a tank, went just about everywhere, and killed my wallet at 8 mpg on those 37" Pitbull Rockers.

Finally had some time to work on this thing. First an overall shot of the chassis and layout of electronics.





Stupid simple and the 5200 should provide ample runtime. A little fine tuning is still needed to get everything perfectly centered.

Big Ups to the guys that build entire trucks out of styrene, you guys have some serious dedication. I wish there was a basic drop in interior for this body. I will have to make it in two pieces so I can remove the front seat portion to get the window piece in and out. I started with the rear. This section is non removable and will get some carpet later.




Also you can see I threw some color on the body. Let me preface this by saying I cannot paint to save my life. I usually stick to matte colors because of this. This color is called Petrol.



I also wanted a tire with less shoulder lugs than the Rock Beasts. The Mad Beasts fit the bill perfectly. Foams are a little too soft for my liking, but the tires are on point.

Also, the truck is looking good. I would suggest detailing the body a little more and you'll have a winner.

Interiors are the hardest part, believe me. But looks like you were able to hide things fairly well. Not that I know for sure or anything, but I do know there's a couple guys looking at designing some interior pieces for the 80...

Agree with Jato, a little more exterior detail and you've got a great looking truck.

Axles came from a random ebay seller. I just chose the one with the best deal. It still may be more cost effective to buy the whole truck if you think you may use the drivetrain or other parts later on.

I guess my "that's it for now" is misleading. Lots more detailing on the body to come. I need to get a few more supplies to do the pillars, headlight buckets, rocker panel, etc. There will be a front section to the interior as well covering up the rest of the electronics. I still have a ways to go on this build.

Edit: I am building an LC70 with the same axles with an UN-Stuck Sporty chassis from Mr. Robob.
Hopefully with the Un-Stuck chassis it will perform better than a scale chassis but the body is heavy.

Whatever. You know how many chicks are into middle aged men on oversized bmx bikes? No, I'm seriously asking. I haven't met any yet.



Blow the dust off that Rover. We're goin scalin next week when the weather breaks.

Yeah about the same amount of chicks as those that are into guys that sit on the front steps all day yelling at cars.

Started trimming the body out I may play with adding a little rust around the edge of the tail lights. My truck had started to rust there for some odd reason.
