Hey McFly! Back to the Future Hilux 3SPD

So, being a huge BTTF fan I just had to try and make Marty's 'suped up HiLux on the Tamiya High Lift chassis. I know that Marty's is the 1985 Toyota HiLux but I still felt that using the earlier version of the HiLux would achieve the same feel.

I started the build process with a brand new Tamiya 58397 kit. I did have to go through some suspension modifications in order to allow the body to sit properly (lower, MUCH lower). Many of these modifications can be found on Tamiya Club.

Aside from the modifications, i did not really swap any of the kit standard parts for upgrades. The only thing i changed was the motor, with a 35T Novak Terra Claw i had. The springs, shocks are all stock and dont think i need to change them anytime soon. I may opt for some RC4WD shocks and springs later, but the way it comes is great for light trail running.

It is still a bit of a WIP, i need to finish applying the side-view mirrors, rubber trimming, and the LED harness. I may also attempt to re-position the motor, transmission and battery at some point to achieve an improved scale look.

Non-Kit Parts Used:
- Novak 35T Terra Claw motor
- Novak Eiger ESC
- Traxxas 2070 servo (transmission)
- Kyosho Perfex MG Servo (steering)
- FlySky Receiver
- FlySky 6 CH "stick" type radio
- Venom 4000 mah 7.4v LiPo Battery
- RC4WD Yota Axle Hubs
- Mud Country styled tires
- 94 US Wheel styled rims
- Tubular front bumper from Tamiya Bruiser Kit

Will continue to update as I go along with the build.

Next on the list is to paint those KC lights!

Thanks :)

I've been wanting to do the same thing. Nice job so far.

Yeah it's been one of those things on my to do list for a long time - as I'm sure it was for many others "thumbsup" Do you plan on using the High Lift chassis too?

Stay tuned for more!

No, probably not. I plan on getting the proline sr5 body. Not sure what chassis to use yet though. The only chassis I currently have available that is without a body is the MST CFX-W.

Good choice! I would like to eventually grab an MST CMX for my Landcruiser 40, seems like a good scale trail/crawler.

So I painted the lights yesterday. I think that they are the look I'm going for but I would much prefer some decals will have to search for some. Having painted them by hand- and looking from a distance it is not too bad. The worst is seeing the screw heads... may need to find a way to cap them or will fill them with some putty and paint over.. hmmm?

Comments, ideas and resources are appreciated!

Will try to get a video sometime soon, thanks!

Looking dusty... Needs a Biff Co. wash and wax!

I love it! I'm also a huge BTTF fan :D
For the lights you can close the hole with putty and apply paint again, but I think decals would look much better ;)

Very cool! Much better looking than if you had thrown on a ProLine lexan BTTF body.

Great build. Why'd you use a first gen body instead of a second gen like in BTTF?

Will continue searching for decals! But I think you're right, will have to putty them up for now :)

Thanks!

Good question. To be honest it was more about cost saving than anything. I sought after the kit and figured I would try as much as possible to make the body look like the second gen from the film (stay tuned for custom headlight lenses). At the time of purchasing the kit the Proline body was not out yet, or even heard of! Though, if a hard body SR5 should ever come into production I will most likely attempt to create one :) but for now I just can't see using anything else than the hard-body, 1st gen Hilux 8)

Thanks!

Right on, I understand completely! I have the lexan secund gen body, and I've been considering coating the inside with Bondo and fiberglass in order to convert it into a "hard body"..

That's a really great idea! Though, I have 0 experience using bondo on lexan. I am not so sure if it will adhere to the material. I get what you are trying to achieve and would you perhaps consider some fiberglass tape with shoe goo? It might come out a bit cleaner and last longer? Just a suggestion of course.. do some testing on scrap lexan to see what works "thumbsup"

Re: Hey McFly! Back to the Future Hilux 3SPD

Another option is to use plaster of Paris to create a mold for it, then create a hard body inside that... It'd be a lot of work, but it'd be a cheap way to get a hard body

Hey bud. Really love this generation you did. But I got these for my build, they're from the UK and were 10 bucks plus shipping, but I think its really going to blow a lot of people's minds how good using these and other parts are going pull this build off. They're going to take a while to get here I'm sure of it, but patience pays.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a5a47c41fa.jpg

Of course! I wouldn't let a fellow Rc enthusiast/BTTF Fan
make due without em'! It's one of those must haves for something like this.

They made it across the pond today, and all I can say is wow! The printing and adhesive is super high quality. The seller also included 2 sheets which is super great of him/her for FUTURE builds. They may be a tad large for my light covers so I'll probably have to trim em. I'll get some pics of it on my build thread later tonight or this weekend. Staying tuned here to see how it turns out on your truck"thumbsup"
