Default D90 pickup

This is going to be interesting...... My son wants a D90 camel trophy pickup however, I think he has some strange ideas! Best way I can describe it is a modern take on an old classic as he loves the Kahn styling. Hopefully it'll turn out ok........

Starting with a cheap Chinese D90 body, no point in spending any more as I have both the Chinese and RC4WD body's and there is absolutely no difference between them.

Will use the roof as part of the flatbed but cut the rear off and used the rear panel as the back of the cab.

E6000!

Gotta go research rusty paint effects......

Yes the pickup has the rounded rear end but I think it looks terrible if I'm honest. I knew someone would mention the rust scenario but it's what the little un wants and it's a good opportunity to give the weathering a go as I've not done it before.

Making a start on the bed

Thanks slam!

This is the part where I begin to wonder why I started another build..... sanding is messy and time consuming!!! Rewarding in the end when it's perfect though.

Chassis turned up
Boom racing and I must say, it's as sturdy as my Rc4wd!

And I've rebuilt a set of icons for the build. I like that they have a good centimetre more travel than some other shocks out there.

Bucket seats are a bit tall

So I've cut the bases off to get them sitting right. Cut some strips to keep strength in the floor pan and give something to fix the seats to.

Mockup

Thinking the ironman colour theme is a bit loud....

Some goodies arrived

And I've got the dash lights sorted out

Made up some little boxes of leftover styrene to hold the light. Just got to shrink wrap the back of the led to stop light leaking out

Trimmed the small eyelets for the glass location as they're a bit out of place, looks much better.

Test fitted the dash and soldered the dash leds

Chassis is fitting ok, needs a bit of jiggery pokery here and there

Used a door card from a previous shell to finish off the bed, will do it body colour I think

I think I'm going to Matt black the red leather on the seats and door cards as it's looking cartoonish. Like I said in the beginning, it's a build for my son but I'm slowly convincing him less is more

I've been really struggling with wheel and tyre options but I think I've finally made up my mind. With the ssd disks I'm stuck with 6 lug wheels so that's kind of narrowed my choices a bit.

Lastly, the paint scheme. Not sure if it's going to work but I have an idea that the kiddo likes too so will have to see. I'm in the middle of making the Kahn arches and the bonnet / hood bulge from styrene which is proving massively time consuming but until they're done I can't paint....

Here's the jiggery pokery - I'm a bit of a stickler for things rubbing and close tolerances. I gaffes about with this for ages making sure nothing rubbed and there's no issues with the icons up front. With the extra bit of travel it was causing problems.

Shortened one of the rods using stainless steel tube, tapped new threads in the end. For some reason it was steering more one way than the other due to it being slightly too long...

More jiggery pokery using some brass bushings to make sure suspension is as free and smooth as possible
