Default Toyota, gotta have one!

I’ve been deliberating on how best to do a Toyota hilux, I’m not really a fan of the leaf spring set up but going away from this leaves complications for the bed obviously.

I’ve kind of made my mind up on the plan of attack for this one but you know how it goes, a different path may unfold as progress is made. I love my 2 scx10 ii D90 traybacks, love the 10 ii chassis as well so that’s what’s made my mind up on this.

I picked up a bag of scx10 chassis parts

The axles have to be the most un-scale looking in the planet so those are out.... I’ve got a rear Rc4wd yota 2 scale axle laying around, albeit in bits but I think it’ll work. Hopefully can get hold of a front axle at a sensible price.....

Maybe a Dinky/HR rear setup?

Rebuilt the scx10 shocks, I like the scx10 ii shocks and these are pretty much the same but plastic bodies. Not sure I like the dual spring setup, it’s not as smooth as a single spring setup.....

Look for some 12.5x60 springs. Not necessarily this spring rate, but an example.

So asiatees had a great offer on some links but they were green.....

I bought a load knowing roughly what I needed after loads of measuring.

Green wasn’t going to work so it had to go...

Plain aluminium looked a bit junk as well so I painted the graphite grey

I started measuring everything up, a major trial and error scenario to see what’s best and started getting really frustrated so called it a day..... more soon

Time to start sorting this chassis out
Braised a cage up similar to another one I have out of the usual brake line. Pretty happy with the fit. Not painted properly yet as I know with all the messing about it will get scratched up

If you flip it the Rx box the other way it'll kind of look like a gas tank with the body on. But will limit the rear suspension a little.

So the bag of bits that I got hold of cheap also had a Toyota hilux body included, however it was in bad shape. I don’t know what the previous owner was thinking but anywhooo :/

This was the cab, painted in a dust storm and holes drilled for mounting ... lol

Started tidying it up

The back of the cab was hot glued in - yes you read that right....

Started tidying that up too. I like the mojave rear corrugated section but it’s like £20! Trying to keep this build at a sensible budget so I’ve cut something similar from styrene..... £1.85 and I used less than half

Don’t get me started on the bed.... it had been cut and then melted back together with a soldering iron. FFS really?!

I’ve trimmed the bottom edge of the rear part for more clearance

Beginning to mock everything up regarding the links. This is really frustrating stuff, measure, install, check for any rubbing / restrictions and then move on...... only to find something else starts rubbing. Going backwards and forwards but sure I’ll get there in the end.

Having to improvise a bit by drilling holes in the rails for some of the links to fit without touching anything. Also had to add a spacer

And the rear end getting some attention / abuse.... whatever you want to call it

I’ve bobbed it, the overhang on the rear was too much, it would get caught up on everything.

Building the axles

I did contemplate making a battery plate out of aluminium and mounting it behind the front wheels but when mocking it up it was going to lead to issues with the dashboard. The stock battery tray is what I’m running on my other 10 ii’s and so far I haven’t really felt the need to change the setup. So, I’ve kept the same here...

Did the lettering for the tailgate, far from perfect but no way I was paying those silly prices for the proper ones.
