Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer So i found this 1/8 scale New Bright Ford Raptor body not too long ago on Ebay for a great deal. I've been looking everywhere for one and they were crazy expensive or beat up too badly. I would love to have a 1:1 Raptor but that will never happen. So i have to build a small version of what i want, just like all my trucks. The plan was to keep it kinda simple, keep the bed intact by using a shock set-up that allows no cutting of the bed, make a spare tire mount in the bed, maybe build front and rear bumpers, and some rock rails for body protection. Now that i have the body i need wheels and tires that match the real thing. I bought Axial beadlocks and had some older Locked up rings that will work perfectly. I will be using Pro-line tires because they are perfect for the look. The truck will use an Axial scx-10 chassis and axles. Yes, i know real Raptors use IFS up front. I'm not getting that involved in building this truck. Maybe down the road i'll change it. Now a couple of pics. https://i.imgur.com/6PsfHhn.jpg?2 https://i.imgur.com/lbJrz7f.jpg?3 https://i.imgur.com/k0wLsOR.jpg?3 https://i.imgur.com/qypkIHo.jpg?1 |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer Oh, forgot this. Funny tire warning i found https://i.imgur.com/bnvhlz7.jpg?2 |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer What’s the wheelbase and width? Would an ar60 fit? |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer The wheelbase is around 12 1/4 inches, give or take alittle. I haven't set it in stone yet. I will be using first generation scx-10 axles which are almost perfect width for the body, just a bit of tire stick out from the fenders. I'll get some pics soon. |

Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer Looks spot on! Was concerned about axles being too narrow with the body but they couldn't be better. You may want to consider a smaller 1.9 or 1.55 tire though. |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer Today was a busy day. I really tried my best not to cut up the rear bed and have shock mounts sticking through, but that just couldn't work the way i wanted. The shocks either hit on something, or bound up due to odd angles, or gave me way too much articulation and rubbed like crazy on the body. I really didn't want some plain looking plastic shock hoops coming through the bed. So this is what i came up with. A scrap piece of aluminum that i decided to make a fixture and weld up my own mounts. I drilled and tapped the metal based off the stock mounts. This will help keep things in place during welding. Figured i would make some front mounts also. https://i.imgur.com/iPPaR1g.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/yoLUypR.jpg?1 These are some tabs i had laser cut at work for some previous projects. should work perfectly. https://i.imgur.com/aIW8Ra5.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/wd4TTLV.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/Uc1vYTi.jpg?1 And the finished product. Still working on my Tig welding skills. https://i.imgur.com/SCDmmX7.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/RQGzOHH.jpg?1 What it looks like through the bed. https://i.imgur.com/G6hARDS.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/HcjqzGN.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/aA9VWN0.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/EyRaoU3.jpg?1 That's it for now. |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer Superb shock hoops and fitting! Was a little concerned with "noob" skills, as per the low post count, but it looks like you have this well under control. |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer Great work on the mounts! Mine are aluminum plate sticking out, and they look a bit hokey. These look much better. |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer Yep. Those look good. I was gonna suggest a cantilever setup but these will work. |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer The Dinky cantilever set up was one I tried. It's an amazing product, I just couldn't get it to work for this truck. It had too much flex even after playing with different springs and shock oil. It will work better for a crawler than a go fast truck, that's kinda what I'm going for. |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer What size shocks you going to use on this build? |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer Still playing around with different shocks at the moment. Right now its Traxxas big bores off a slash 2wd fronts, don't remember the part number. I've put those on a couple different trucks and they have always worked pretty well. |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer I finally came up with a way to mount the body to the chassis. A couple of plates, posts, screws, and some velcro. The rear of the body is held on by four bolts in the bed, kinda what you would see in a real truck. The front is held in place with velcro. The front plate sits in between the molded in body post on the Raptor body. This locks in the body and doesn't allow it to move side. This also helps to locate the body when putting it on the chassis. Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer Next thing i made was the rock rails or sliders. Sorry no step by step on these. They are pretty straight forward. I do have one tip I like to use, it is drilling a hole for the bar that connects the plate/chassis side to the actual rail. When you slide the bar into the plate it will keep everything straight and 90 when welding. The round bar i use is 3/16, so i drill a 3/16 hole in the plate. Nice and snug fit. Then just weld up the backside also. Sorry if that's a bit confusing. Maybe the pics will clear it up. https://i.imgur.com/6TxvGYA.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/6TmjEaU.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/2LAQJAK.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/AhBLAzM.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/qJGagcB.jpg?1 And lastly, Bye bye rear bumper! I will start on the new one tomorrow. https://i.imgur.com/kRf1u4L.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/mSBkCr9.jpg?1 |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer Rear bumper update. So i had some time after work to use the tig machine and finish up the bumper. I have a couple of pics prior to welding, but mostly of the finished product. The main bracket everything will be based off of. These were kind of a pain. They had to be identical so everything welded onto them will be perfect and straight. These were cut with a hacksaw and hand filed to perfection. I really wish i knew a machinist, it would've saved me a bunch of time. These bolt to the sides of the chassis and the round bar extends back to the rear. https://i.imgur.com/z56yuum.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/Wv3w6AU.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/EtL66bS.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/1B0CDnO.jpg?1 And from that to the finished bumper. https://i.imgur.com/tIEk497.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/dJMQXzX.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/9XSuZKe.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/jkjSXGC.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/lIcZChM.jpg?1 With the body on. https://i.imgur.com/F2D2hM8.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/EC180Xb.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/BQAEd54.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/Yi1bGcL.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/2VDXLcU.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/WVhTF2c.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/ghcRFow.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/Jq9b6eT.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/u8SFeqM.jpg?1 Overall i'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. Everything stayed straight and almost perfect. Now onto the front bumper!!! |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer Thanks guys. I looked at pictures of 1:1 bumpers for quite a while and had a hard time deciding. This was a combo of two versions put together. |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer Looks awesome. I'm currently starting on a new bright raptor build though I will be cutting out the bed minus the bedsides and having a cage built. |
Re: Ford Raptor weekend warrior and dune slayer Nice, can't wait to see what you come up with. I almost went that route, maybe the next one! I saw mattzilla had a really cool looking Raptor on his facebook page. |
