A 46 Power Wagon for 2018 Axial-festing.

Way back around the end of last year I decided that 2018 would be year that I made my Quadrennial return to Axial Fest. Problem being, every small truck I own has some weird combination of non-axial parts so I needed to buy / build something extra special to meet the Axial Fest rules. Pro-line had just blew my socks off with the new 46' Wagon body and I new I had to have one. I had one of their original 4 door bodies for many years, but was always too chicken to chop it up, but this new readily available body would do just fine! I've focused on SORRCA builds for many years, so I knew I wanted to take this opportunity to build something a little more conservative.

My early inspiration was the Legacy built Power wagons as they're a nice combination of not-stock, but also not overly hill-billy'd:

I started by stealing this nicely SSD equipped slider that I got for a few pennies and a bag of beans. It came with SSD Axles, links, MIPs, and the SSD knuckles / C-hubs.

Just plopping the body down on the chassis told me pretty early on that some minor modifications would be needed.

I started by Butchering some Scaler Fab sliders.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/972/4...cc0fe2fc_b.jpg

And I made them gooder with some key-stock which tuck's nicely up into the running boards (I'm kind of proud of these if you can't tell)

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/869/4...7d2d7c1d_b.jpg

Because I'm cool, I wanted to use one of the fancy new Warn 8274's so I went about carving out a front bumper.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/977/4...62245d07_b.jpg

I also decided to go with the smaller 4.3" swampers, as I think they're much more proportional, though they will be replaced with much shinier ones later:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1829/...3ae5c5f0_b.jpg

Somewhere along the way I went really crazy and cut out the bed. I started with a styrene drop bed, but it along weighed about as much as the truck by itself, so I suspect it will become lexan before it's over with.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1760/...c35c38f9_b.jpg

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/922/4...017491e6_b.jpg

Also, I went about building a metal grill because I was to impatient to wait for the RC Nerds grill which will probably look much nicer than mine.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/842/4...133e2f2c_b.jpg

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1807/...6055484e_b.jpg

I'll cut out the stock grill and shoo-goo this sucker in there:
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1769/...f629ded8_b.jpg

Along the way I did sneak in a few performancy upgrades. Namely the Toyzuki transfer case, rear upper link raisers (re-cycled tabs from those Scaler Fab Sliders). I also completely replaced all but two of those SSD links to make the geometry not-terrible and modified the heck out of some Dinky cantilevers to fit under the drop bed.

So here's sort of where we are, much to do and short time to do it!

Looks good so far. Those clipped Boggers almost look like a set of NDCC tires. Just a lot wider.

Thank you! Chino clipped those - they're awesome I just need to find the right build for them.

Few small updates - mostly just waiting for paint to dry before I can do final assembly. :ror:

Color!!

All the metal got a vinegar bath to remove the rust / flux. Before:

Thanks man!!

So I painted some stuff (not the coaster, or the coffee table, they just look like that normally).

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1787/...3417cc85_b.jpg

Then I added a winch

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/917/2...4ebcbe57_b.jpg

Started making it into a truck.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/836/4...c4a3b428_b.jpg

Built some electronics plates for each of the sliders. I used the 'measure three times, cut twelve times' method to get these right.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/917/4...8c52f4be_b.jpg

I hear all the cool kids are 'dropping those beds' or whatever, so I did that but worse.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1785/...18bb50d1_b.jpg

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1768/...b80ee756_b.jpg

I also mounted up some Maddog RC light pods for headlights. Took a bit to get them level but here we are.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1805/...a2ef28fd_b.jpg

I also finally glued in the bane of my existence (that darn grill), of which 80* is hidden by the big winch and added some amber Maddog RC light pods for flavor.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1822/...6f6c7826_b.jpg

Few coats of Tamiya and 3 coats of bedliner later it looks ehhhhhh. If I do another one I'll pawn someone with vacuum former into doing a nice drop bed that actually sort of fits for me.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/924/2...79d06a09_b.jpg

But it other news, it's done! Stickers featuring 'DODE' and 'POWAR WUGUN' were added in post production (after this picture was taken).

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/846/2...09bfdd57_b.jpg

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/836/4...0644b745_b.jpg

Junk in that trunk:

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/922/4...0ec0d713_b.jpg

There are some funky problems that are going to drive me nuts during Axial Fest. Namely it takes no less than 8 screws to get the body off (the originally idea was to have it solid mounted, but you can't get the cab off with the bed on (ah the price of no body posts) and the darn running boards can be hard to keep flat, but I think it's good enough for AF!!!

No body mounts = the price of cleanliness!:lmao:

Same deal with my 1.9 Truggy.

 Yeah I should have learned my lesson with the bug I built awhile back, but here we are.

Yeah, but they look so clean and seamless without them.

Plus one in support of no body posts, "thumbsup"

i invert my body posts on the underside of the body so they guide and slide onto the chassis between the shock towers, and have magnets goo'd on both sides to hold it all together. That system is very durable and takes lots of tumbles. Feel free to use a variation, I won't charge you

That is a smart idea sir - I might look into something like it!
