Trail rig on the budget - Custom Unimog Yes! Another budget conscious build. I need a trail rig, my D90 is too slow and my FY03 is just too small. Been looking at whats available and decided to start gathering parts. Axles will be the silly old HG’s. They are performing well on my heavy D90 and seems solid on the Woman’s rig. And for what Banggood sells them at you cannot complain. Just add bearings. The list thats on order/getting shipped at the moment: Silly HG axles JX 20kg servo Xtra Speed rod ends Xtra Speed helical gear scx10 gearbox Xtra Speed ‘stainless’ punisher drive shaft copies QuicRun 1080 Axial Y-links Tamiya Unimog 406 body. The chassis might be a china D90 effort or it might be laser cut. Had a gander at it on a d90 chassis and don’t like the length. I prefer the swb look. Got auto-cad sparked and drew up a swb scx10 based chassis. Its getting cut at the moment. Loving Aliexpress with their buyer protection again. The build is almost halfway sponsored by them atm... Servo will be axle mounted too as I’m not going to fight with cms link lengths. They are tougher than the Revo Still waiting on local postal service to deliver. Just going to slam it with heavy axles now. The wheels are quite heavy already. If all goes well my gearbox should be in my hands within a month. South African Post Office is sitting with a 10mil package backlog.... At least the axles will be delivered within 3 weeks with direct mail. Cant wait to start laying out the rig. I have some DS Servos on the way too. Looking for some opinions on motor choice. I would love getting a trail master but availability locally is a bit bad. I would like some decent wheels speed but enough control for basic crawling on the trail. Mabuchi 27t motors are plentiful though and might just be the option for now? Stripped it, greased it and thread locked the screws. Motor is an unused Johnson 27t out the back of the .drawer for now. These axles are really awesome for the price. Lol. Don’t have an overwhelming rubber smell. Theres 8 of them lying around and its all cool. Had it out for a test run quick. Re: Trail rig on the budget. Shocks are really nice too. Doesn’t leak too much. Way better than anything else I run. I fill them 3/4 of the way with 42w oil and its nicely damped and responds good. The 80mm on the front carries the weight brilliantly. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The springs are the same as Tamiya’s. 14mm? They can be stripped completely. Internal wont be a problem. Body painted and got the basic decals on. Hinged body mount. The cvd drive shaft on the back lost a pin and all of its innards. So after looking again I found a grub screw in the cvd that holds the pin. Never too old to lean, hey. Should have noticed that earlier. Anycase, its all stud locked up now. Had it out for a bit and it climbs awesomely. Side hill driving is good too. Front shocks are 80mm with 40wt half way. Nice and soft but still controlled. The back shocks are 90mm with 40wt till the top because of the angle. Its responds slow enough to hold the front down while not having to preload. Nothing to say about the 1080. We all know what it can do. The 27t Johnson is actually working ok for now. Only got slightly warm and got the rig through everything I aimed it at. Thus far the china swampers are gripping like beasts. Will see how long they will do that still. Whenever the local distributor shows stock on some HH 27T’s I will get one. The JX servo will get swopped as soon as I get the DX’s. And I will also address the horrible steering links that came with the axles when I fit the DX. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Trail rig on the budget. Great budget build. I have a set of those axles on my loaner rig. They've handled some serious abuse. I'm a big HH fan, but when I go cheap, I go with a YeahRacing Hackmoto. Only around $17 USD, rebuildable and performs great. |

Re: Trail rig on the budget. Had it out yesterday. Did really well. Had only change on the 1080 was to change the initial start to 1 from 9. Also dropped the battery tray to behind the front shock towers to help aid in downhill weight balance. Was a bit front heavy with the battery between the front towers. Also dressed the body a bit better behind the cab and got rid of the gearbox cover for now. Will think about it again when I kill this cage. Tires lacked a bit in the sand. Prolines will make a difference, but local availability is a problem. Re: Trail rig on the budget. Swopped out the useless China CVD drive shaft in the back for a Xtra Speed ‘Punisher’ Shafts. Binding gone and I feel a lot better with the much larger grub screws.
