Good idea, I may still do this. Gonna see if it "needs" it as it comes together. I figure if you made holes and brushed in the same rust effect I used on the hood it would probably look pretty good.

Meanwhile, in the spirit of trying new things in this project, I've jumped into the world of airbrushing. (Apologies in advance to everyone that already knows how to airbrush, I'm just making things up as I go along and I'm sure my equipment and methods are pretty bad). I bought this airbrush on ebay for less than $10 and I'm using it in combination with the 50 cent Walmart paint to do the interior. (I'M CHEAP ) Thinning the paint out with water at about 5 parts paint to 1 part water and running the airbrush off a regular air compressor set to 50 PSI. It works great and it's a lot of fun to use, I love it! The adhesion of this paint to plastic isn't great, but it's fine for the interior and I'll be topping it off with some matte clear out of a spray can.

There will also be weathering, of course

Are you using paint for the dirt? Or some sort of spray tack and then throwing dirt on it?

It's all been paint so far. For the windshield I held a can of brown spraypaint like 3 feet away and gave it a really quick mist, then followed that with a light coat of Krylon clear matte finish out of a spray can. The clear matte has been very useful in this project for taking the shine out of things.

The only thing that takes longer to paint than a hardbody is a hardbody with a full interior. Whew! After airbrushing on the gray color and hand-brushing some details, I went over everything with acrylic black and brown diluted with water to make it grimy. I also added a solid black border to the windshield, which officially makes it the most labor-intensive R/C windshield I've ever done. I'm gonna go lay down.

Cab, meet frame.

It looks close to finished but there's actually still a lot to do. This is mostly because I'm determined to make a bed out of wood, which is something else I've never attempted. Then figure out how to weather the wood in a convincing way. Then there are some final weathering steps for the body, and also need to make the tires look dirty (possibly using actual dirt ).

Thank you!

I've been pleased with the quality of this kit. Assembly has been mostly trouble-free and it ran surprisingly quiet during the test drive. The only issues I've had so far are:

1. The tires were wobbly because the 2 stage foams were hard to seat evenly. (Possibly my fault due to the new wheels)
2. The shocks I added are a pain because they have to be completely taken apart to make spring adjustments. (My fault)
3. The hood didn't close correctly because I warped it with fire. (Definitely my fault).

So as long as you aren't me, this is close to a perfect truck.

Now about that wooden bed...

The hood not closing, whether intentional or not, is a good touch imo.
Nice job so far.

This design looks fairly simple for a man of your talents.

I like it! Regardless of the design, I see three main obstacles:

1. Gluing/screwing/nailing things together well enough that it would stand a chance of holding together in a rollover. She's a heavy girl for her size.
2. The back tires can go up pretty high during articulation so I may have to make the bed narrowed/tapered like the stock one is.
3. At least part of it needs to be easily removable to access the battery underneath.

I thought about buying one of these King Kong kits, keeping the bed parts and selling the rest but that would be too much work... and cheating!

THIS IS REALLY HARD GUYS

The little time I've been able to spend on this hasn't gotten me very far. I've broken at least twice as much wood as you see here just trying to nail it all together, and if the theme of this truck required perfection I would've given up already. Here are some pics of the "progress", starting with my solution to keep the battery door removable.

Haven't trimmed the edges off yet. It's maybe 1/3 completed at this point.

I took a break from the frustration and installed this so the included winch will work with the 2 position 3rd channel on my Flysky GT3C transmitter. Works great! This is the second gadget I've tried from HeyOK and I've been impressed both times.

Perhaps screws instead of nails? You could drill a pilot hole if needed

True. I used screws with pre-drilled holes on the bottom, but I thought nails from the top were important because the screw heads I have don't look scale.

Getting closer. The side pieces are attached with Gorilla wood glue which is easy to work with and seems plenty strong. I'm going to use the main hoop of the Demon's roll bar but I'm still undecided about the kickers.

Bed accomplished! The sides are all held together with wood glue. Easy to work with but it's an endless cycle of glue, clamp, repeat. I decided not to install the kickers for the roll bar and instead mounted a rear-facing cargo light in one of the holes. The cargo light will be needed to light up... the cargo! More on that later.

Next step is weathering this thing.

I'm planning to fire up the airbrush again later on to give the whole truck a light mist of brown. Kinda like if you drove it behind someone on a dirt road.

Thanks. I agree minwax would look nice, but I'm not sure I want to do it because the end result isn't supposed to look nice. It's a strange goal to work towards. My first thought was to go over the whole thing with a watered down light gray color to make it look unprotected and sun-bleached, but I'm not sure. Going to test out some things first on the leftover wood.

That's better. I used the watered-down acrylic paint method again. That has been a really useful method throughout this project. Mix some acrylic paint with a little water in a shot glass and then go nuts with a paint brush. Blot off any puddles or excess. Some glossy surfaces will make it bead up before drying and/or not stick well but I've found putting down a coat of matte clear acrylic out of a spray can first helps with that. Wasn't a problem in this case because the wood sucked it right up.
