Default The Bug Named Roach

I’ve been admiring many of the bug builds and felt the need to add one to the arsenal.

GOALS:
- lighter than my typical trail rigs
- divorced using built VP 3gear trans and GCM tcase or GCM LRT drive train.
-3 link front w/ possible 3 link rear
-sliders/bumpers
-interior with driver
-servo winch
-frame and all my metal work raw. (Roach)
-.........Stock 10-10 1/4 wheelbase

I picked up a CBE Swb chassis and decided to try a little different skid than normal and went with a few Fish skids. I currently have the little thing linked up and in mock up status sitting on 1.5 Berserker’s coming in with a staggering 10.25 inch wheelbase.
Pics.

More to come.....

I always like bugs. It's a good thing because I have two 1:1 bugs here that my sons have "parked". My first car was a 57 bug. So they're in the blood...

Awesome! My first car was a 83 Rabbit GTI.

I did manage to toss some mock up hoops and shocks on. This should be pretty close to ride height.

I hauled roach over to the shop to get some side by side comparison shots of roach by my other builds. I didn’t realize there was a visitor stopping by......

Everything clears with the low slung mocked body and no springs in the mock up shocks.... that’s a good feeling. Going together easy so far. Need to change the front temp shock hoops from 10.2 to OG scx. I plan on welding permanent damper hangers when I do sliders and bumpers. Very soon the welder comes out.

I’m sorry I knew some folks would boo a little but I think it’s hilarious. Dude looks so much like. Tune in and I will limit his visits.

I agree. They are very addictive to build. I don’t know if I’ve just built so many it works out or I am very lucky allot. But this one is really moving along with little bumps or bruises.

I kept looking at the bug and although it’s very much in mock up stage it wasn’t quite right. I ended up moving the front upper and added 2 longer traxxas rod ends (mock up stage) to the rear lower links on the axle attachment side.

Pics of change.

Prior to the few simple suspension tweaks the bug at ride height was at 10 inches of wheelbase. Following the few quick mock up changes it sits right at 10.5. This stance might look a bit aggressive but remember it will be sitting a tad higher and thus far you have only seen 1.5 tires with an O/D of 3.95 inches. Roach is getting treated to some 1.9 Locked up wheels and the tires are currently under investigation

Forgot to post the drivetrain I decided to go with. I have it configured close to where I will permanently mount them. I love how low it’s going to rest. Remember this is full bump with large Axial rubber shock spacers. Again just mock up components being used.

I will be removing the SS chromo extended 6mm outputs and replacing them with some fresh standard length 5mm Locked up rc chromo outputs. Pay no mind to the front drive shaft.

I do love how low it sits in the frame

Quality update.

I picked up some fresh Agile rings and Stainless hardware from the fine folks at Locked Up Rc. I had some 1.9 gear jammers that have been cerekoted stealth gray. I figured they would go well with the little bug.

Kinda giving away my colors but wanted to show...

I have the suspension set just about right. Need to install shocks I will be using before I will know 100%. Much more to come.....

Thank you good sir....I think the wheels compliment the build nicely. Colors should be fun.

It is crazy you brought this question forth. I just started back up on an old TJ build and actually swapped the modified SCX chassis from the TJ build to Roach. Now the TJ and Roach are better paired up. The width of the CBE is exactly the width of the TJ grill

Ok guys.... sorry for the delay. Been finishing up a room remodel for my oldest daughter. I do have some updates to report.

I ended up going a different direction with the frame for 2 reasons. 1 the CBE quite a bit wider and didn’t quite match the nose width of the body. 2 the CBE chassis fits an upcoming build perfectly!!!!!! Like made for perfect.

Anyhow I went with a basic OG frame with some temporary bracing. I tossed the axles from my Toyota flat bed under it. I’m very pleased with the fit and movement of the new frame and suspension

Smooth suspension travel with no interference

Pinion angles are on point

About right at 10.5

Oh I picked up some .185 hubs from LURC. They really sucked in my track and work with brass SSD knuckles (does require a tiny bit of sanding).

Time to break out the MiG......

Rainy day updates! Put some time in today.

I always start builds with sliders. Gets the body where you want it so bumpers are easier to figure.

Need to remove a tiny bit from the inner nose but it is so close to flush.
