Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug

I've picked up a 3D printer and am working on 3D printing an engine for a new Bug. A Sand Scorcher on MST rails with bits of this and that for the rest of the chassis. Here where I am at the moment with the engine.

Here's the printer. It's an Anycubic Mega-S. Upgraded it to Marlin 1.1.9 firmware with its mesh bed levelling and added a 0.2mm nozzle as well. Other than that it's stock at the moment.

Some of the parts printed so far. The white rods are 1mm styrene. To put costs into perspective one cylinder cost $0.02 (Canadian).

Here's some of the rejects. Parts that failed mostly because I was trying to get a new printer dialled in. Trying to print the tiny air cooling fins on the cylinders and cylinder heads is pretty difficult as they are so so tiny and thin. Pretty happy with things so far. Still experimenting with settings though.

Cheers eh,

Todd

Here are the chassis rails and transfer case..

I'm using the Boom Racing BRX70 axles. They are as narrow as. How do you like that minimalist chassis?

Here's the body on the chassis with Boom Racing wheels and tires as well. Also narrow.

Also got some 3D printed parts from Shapeways.

A dashboard by Scorched Parts.

And a louvered rear sun shade by Junkyard Stance.

Damnit.... Now I HAVE to get a 3d printer before I start building my scorcher........ Thanks a lot.

Looks great, I am real impressed by those Micro Aircooled parts. Jealous.

Thanks and yeah go get one. They’re getting cheaper all the time. It’s getting easier to do all the time but they still require a bit of fiddle farting around to get them to work right.

Thanks Mike. This is the same engine stl file that's in my Carisma Bug but shrunk down a bunch to make it fit the Tamiya body. It's going to be a slow build. Winter is long here.

Amazing engine, I can’t believe it even has a fan inside the shroud. Where did you get the stl from?

Nice prints! Impressive that the fins look so thin yet still good! I love this. I need to build a Scorcher body rig.

Does the Scorcher body differ from the Blitzer Beetle or Monster Beetle bodies?

The stl comes with the transmission as well but I left that bit off. Here's where I got the stl file. Best $4.79 that I've spent on this car so far. It's for a 1/5 scale model so you'd have to scale things down a bit.

Yeah, I had to slow the printing way down and lower the temperatures when printing the cylinders and heads. Took some time to figure it out but I'm happy with the results.

Not sure about the other bodies. Never seen either.

Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug

Sweet project! I also have a Scorcher project in the works.

I picked up the same rear window louvers from Junkyard Stance, I couldnt figure out what else to do for the back window. For those that dont know the scorcher never included a rear window with the body kit.

What chassis is that? RC4WD?

How narrow are those axles wheel to wheel?

I went for narrowed SCX10.2 axles from Beeftubes and got about 8 1/4" wheel to wheel on some narrow tires.

Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug

I’m working on an MST CMX chassis but trying some different ideas for a transmission. The axles are narrow! 148.5mm pin-to-pin (5.846 inches). Here’s a link to them. They’re about perfect for this body.

Here’s a top view.

Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug

I also got narrow wheels and tires. Started with 1.55s and then I found some 21mm wide 1.9s at Boom Racing. I like them a lot. What I don't like is that my 7mm driver doesn't fit. I need a thin walled driver or have to use the goofy tool that came with the wheels.

Tires are also Boom Racing. 3.6" X 0.94". Small and narrow as you can see here.

Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug

By the way, I used the same stl file to print an engine for my other Bug but it's a lot closer to 1/8 scale than 1/10 so the engine is a lot bigger and was easier to print. Here's a comparison of a Sand Scorcher to the Carisma Bug that I based mine on and a couple of shots of the engine for my big Bug.

Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug

I've been as busy as at work so haven't had much time to play with the 3D printer. Did get a few more parts printed. Got lots of sanding ahead and a few more parts to print, some glueing and boom! A new engine.

The bolt here is 1mm in diameter. This is the generator clamp.

looks so good, whats the wheelbase?

Tossedman 02-04-2019 09:04 PM

Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug

Thanks! Wheelbase is 245mm. Pretty short to fit the Sand Scorcher body.
