Codyboys SV4-10 "Making it my own"

Got this for Christmas (I know, how could I have been that good) . I have a few ideas on how to make it my own.



Home brew foams first. It will give me a chance to share how I build foams.



For those of you who haven't checked out one of my builds, I try to give a lot of detail so the new guys can see how easy some steps of a build can be!

To the drill press and hole saws the foam goes. (I also like to repurpose, and the CC foam started life as a gym mat.



Ok, I have 5 blanks cut. now to cut out the centers.



Next I move to the wood lathe to shape and true the foam.



Next up is the router table to bevel the ID edges of the foam.



Adding just thin soft foam donut for filler. Going with some SSD steel wheels.



Ok, all four mounted and they filled stock tires very nicely.



I know, foams aren't that expensive but I like building my own sometimes, Kind of "making them my own".



Next I built the tranny and added a VP V2 dig. I'm not going to show all of the kit build steps, you guys have seen them already in some of the other great SV4 builds on here.





All for tonight, more later, but for tomorrow I have a axle order to work on.

U mustve been a really extra good boy for a present like that lol. Nice way to reuse a foam mat, never woulda thought bout that. I really like those SSD wheels. Watchin to see where u take this too, subbed

Thats pretty sweet i must say, this is the first time i have ever seen someone make dual stage foams !

Love the "home-brewed" foams! Seems like it would be an awesome way to experiment with different sizes and densities for tuning without breaking the bank!

Yeah I love the dual stage CI foams but they often dont have enough "crush" to them. I'll be keeping my eye out for some closed cell foams and hole saws.
Stock foams have good crush but I absolutely cant stand when they just roll over/collapse the side wall.

Last night I was wondering if other methods for filling the tire foam space might be possible such as some material folded in a manner in which it will crush and give in one direction but not the other (so it will not collapse the side wall)
I was kind of inspired by this video from Adam Savages Tested

Part of the reason I thought I would share. Don't get me wrong, CI makes a great product and not encouraging anyone not to use them, I just wanted to share what I do.

Yes, and they cost me next to nothing and just a little time!
I find most of my foam at Goodwill type stores.

Time for a little update.
Along with working on a axle build I took some time for "Killer" today.

So putting together some links was next on the list. Because I'm trying the VP dig unit in this truck I wanted to add a little more weight forward bias. I replaced the heavy SS rear links with some Lunsford Titanium.



Links all together, the rear lowers have a few degrees of bend in them for just a little more break over clearance. I also replaced a few of the other links for cycling clearance in the front suspension.



A shot of the tires and wheels mounted and you can see the bend in the rear lower links.

Actually they're all fine now my bad, I was just looking at them on my work computer and they were massive, now I'm at home and they're all fine, weird.

Great rig ! You might want to look into some beef shanks for your front . The extra weight is a major difference, along with more steering.

That's good, I wonder if anyone else had the picture issue, I know how annoying it can be to look at oversized pics?

Hi Mike, I have drawn a lot of info from your build, great job. I'm working on a couple projects to add some Non rotating weight to lower the COG. I may have some picks for one of them later today.

Also pretty sure I'm going to remove the top and build my own cage.

This doesn’t come close to a stock SCX ii. Can’t wait to see your cage.

Thanks for the kind words sir! It will still be a while before I get it onto the rocks, but looking forward to it!


Ok, next to figure out how to add some non rotating weight to the front and get it as low as I can.
A start, a couple pieces of a harden steel for a new bumper.



I wanted to build a new bumper cause from what I've read the stock on gets hung up a little to easy. But the real reason is add a little more weight added to the front. A piece of 1/2" SS rod will help with that!





Cleaned up and shaped a little on the bottom corners.






I think I'm going to leave polished with no paint.







So did I achieve my goal of narrower and heavier? Stock bumper.



My "make it my own" bumper I'll take a oz.



I started my paint job today also. I sprayed on 5 coats of spray mask and cut out my design and shot orange around the edges and finished of with a bright yellow. You can also see the heater I use for curing paint.







And the Candy Rootbeer.



All for tonight, tomorrow I'm going to add 4 more oz. of non rotating weight to the front.

Thats a pretty sick paint job ernie! Nice color choices. My paint jobs never look that good lol. I have problems doin paint on inside of body, i get confused which i need to do first. Great job on the bumper too. I like the polished look better than one thats painted
