Don't know what's going under this body yet but it's going to be a panel van and not a Kombi with windows. Gotta love having access to a laser cutter. Made cutting the styrene a breeze. |

@Tossedman What is the wheelbase and width of this body? Just curious as to how narrow and if it could possibly be used as a street chassis body. Found this when googling.... |

Ding ding! You are correct. Come up and collect your prize! Quote:
I’m thinking it might end up on an MST CMX chassis. Something like this. First thing though is to finish filling in those windows. Cheers eh, Todd Last edited by Tossedman; 06-16-2019 at 08:29 AM.

This one's also going to have a 3D printed engine. And probably sound too.

Here’s a real one. Now waiting for glue and primer to dry. Filling in windows. Sanding coming up. |

Well, I'm on my usual timeline for a project, it's been over a year since I've updated this van project. I'm making a panel van out of the window van. I started by filling in the windows and the using a sheet of 0.10" styrene to cover them. I then tried to putty it all up and make it flat. After messing with Bondo and other putties I just couldn't get it flat. I spent the last 3 weeks screwing around sanding and filling and sanding and filling and sanding and then two evenings ago said this sucks and ripped it all off. I've replaced the 0.10" styrene with 0.40" sheet and it seems to stay flat. Now I just have to blend it in at the ends. I'm much happier. I'm using some Proflex Flexible Finishing Putty, made for automotive use. So far so good. Here I've put on too much. Sanding again. Time for another coat of primer and then more sanding. And with primer all flaws are revealed. Need a bit of glue and a bit more sanding. Stay tuned, more to come, in between building CrawlerBug II, my teardrop trailer, rebuilding a Slash and getting out crawling and bashing. Last edited by Tossedman; 07-24-2020 at 10:21 PM. |

Oh, boy. If it’s just a fraction as cool as the Bug it’ll still be great.

As cool as this looks like it will become, I can't stop thinking it would be even better looking as a mudder truck with the trans dropped and lifted.

Here's the chassis it'll sit on, an MST CMX with a 242mm wheelbase. The smallest wheels I have are these 1.55" wagon wheels with RC4WD Mickey Thompson MTZ tires Now to figure out the ride height and a way to mount the body. Do I need to make the wheel openings bigger? Fender flares perhaps?

Front wheel wells will be hard to pull off and keep the door seam. Maybe add flares but then the rear wheel well won’t be as accurate. Flares could pull off bigger tires though. Maybe a rounded one in the front and some of those Jeep ones in the back.

Or, you could do like the rear door seam like on a jeep xj where the wheel well attaches to door and is two pieces for door to open. By cutting front wheel well a little higher, you could raise rear well higher and still look scale. Just a couple of more options.. Looking great though!

Well, it's been a while since I've done anything on this project. I've redone the panels and windows three times to get them right(ish). Used thicker styrene and didn't take any pictures during the process. Sorry about that. It was just more of the same though. Picked out some colours for the project. Now to figure out wheels and such and how to mount this chassis. Also need to look at windows. Nice thing is that they're all flat. Question. Do I hinge out the front windshields? Easier to break and harder to make. Also need to figure out a simple interior. Maybe a 3D printed dashboard? Anyone seen an STL for one of those? |
