Default Samil 20 4x4 utility Truck

The Samil 20 is a legendary military truck in South Africa. These things puts a smile on my face every time I see one.

With it being such a simple cab design I decided to attempt building one. I will use recycled abs sheet in 2mm and 0.9mm thickness. Scaled to about 1/8.3 to allow for tucked tires on ar44 axles. This will be a slow build, hopefully to be completed December...

Still deciding on a gearbox. Will design the chassis around whatever I end up getting.

The Samil 20 in all its glory:

Started chopping some abs already:

Scale print on a D90:

Parts Update December 2020:
Axles - HG P802.
Transfer case - Generic 2:1.
Gearbox - Generic 5:1.
Beadlocks - GRC Military.
Tires - Generic Military 116mm.
Servo - JX PDI-HV5523MG straight off 2s.
Motor - surpass branded generic 3slot 20t 550.
ESC - 1060 I had lying around.

Chassis:
Main rails was 50x25 alu tube with 2mm wall. I cut it down to get 25x8 c channel.
Braces and gearbox mount is normal old 21x21 u channel. All other bits was stock lying around.

Got a 1:5 planetary on order. Triton transfer case should be here next week.

Going with basic military style 1.9 tires and will run these glue ons till I find something nice thats a beadlock:

Should get some more abs work done over the weekend. Seats are a bit if a challenge for me, but should have two done.

Correction about the transfer case, it the hammer t case. Leaf springs are also en route. Getting closer to having the parts to be able to finish the chassis cad.

Got a bit further with the abs.

The transfer case also rocked up. Gave it some proper grease and thread lock.

Got the leafs today. Now trying to figure out the mounting. Will also be using 75mm internal spring shocks.

Its my first leaf build. They are a lot bigger than I expected.

Here is what I came up with so far:

Any better ideas?

That looks great. Nice modeling.

The transfer case hangs low and that will hinder performance if you are worried about that.

You are mounting your leaf springs on the outside of the chassis which will work, but the mounts look like they'll be prone to bending. You could do it like the Sawback does it which is how most RC leaf spring rigs do it. The shackles straddle the frame.

Oh and the Sawback leaf spring shackle and mount kit is sold separately here: https://www.rpphobby.com/product_p/gma52304.htm

Thanks Jato. The only reason its on the outside at the moment is because of the stupid long shackles. Think I might just make some smaller ones.

These are 25mm eye to eye. Will shoot for 12mm.

Just need to put some mounts on the body still, then start priming and sanding.

Color will be Rustoleum Cammo Sand.
