The terrible jeep

Finally have it rolling under its own power. I found this jeep body on here a few months ago and have been trying to get it mount as least invasive as possible (no extra body holes) With not much to go on I had to get creative. I didn't want pins in the hood, or to mess with too many screws to get to the inside for battery changes or maintenance. I was able to make a hinge for the rear and I'm going to try magnets for the first few runs but I can already tell I'll probably have to use at least a single screw hidden some where to keep the front from rattling.

A few pics of its first dirt.

Now to build a bumper for the front and rear end, then some rock sliders, and maybe a winch mount, and a roll cage...and and and....

Great looking Jeep! I've always wanted to build one of these.

BTW you posted two threads so I deleted the other. Only one thread per vehicle, please.

Anyone have ideas for rocker guards? I'd love to bend some metal up just like the factory body shape but not sure I could get it to bend tight enough to follow the little mini-boat sides.

Bumpers are built and working on mounting now. Taking a break to go for a bike ride.

Do you mean something like floorboards or something like rock sliders/nerf bars?

For floorboards you can 3D print some if you have that ability. For nerf bars you could start with something from RC4WD for the TF2 and go from there.

Floor boards I have. I was thinking about rocker guards to cover up and protect the plastic body. These hard bodies don't move out of the way like lexan does. And this thing weighs a ton! If it came crashing down on a rock I'm pretty sure it'd crack the body.

Bumpers are roughed in. Still need to do some finish work but they bolt up.

That bumper looks good! If I was you I would cut the 'boat-side' part and just build a traditional slider below the rocker.

Re: The terrible jeep

Is there anyone out there making half doors for these bodies? Planning on making a cage and running without the hard top and that puts the top of the door frame in a really vulnerable spot. I guess I could probably cut some out of metal but for once it's be nice to bolt something on!

Re: The terrible jeep

Picked up some lockeduprc hard ware for the frame and some lug nuts as well. They look awesome in the zink plated color! I have a few holes in the frame to fill after I get the jeep 100% but for now still doing some nit-pick stuff. Still haven't finished the roll cage but I have the main hoop bent, just need to figure out how I want to mount it and the rest will fall together.

Made some progress on the cage. Still working on my tacking then brazing skills. Tacking things with the welder then brazing to fill in the joints has made holding things together a ton easier. But hiding the large weld tacks is pretty hard while some of the parts are bolted to a plastic body. But wow, is it strong! I kind of screwed up and had the down bars on the back come back a little too far. I wanted to open up the bed more and make a 3D printed floor so a lot of the factory wall would have to be cut away.

Any pics out there of fender flares cut on these? I feel like the jeep still has the grocery getter look to it. I found some Knight Customs smittybilt fenders on shape ways but at $70 I don't think I want to go smashing them into rocks.

Looking awesome so far. Someday I hope to leave my comfort zone and try welding/brazing for RC.

Anxiously watching this, as I'm converting my Trailwalker to use the same body. Is there any way I could trouble you for some shots of the cuts you had to make to clear the transmission and rear shock hoops?

In my opinion you should cut those fender flairs off and make some tube fenders metal looks awesome with rock rash and they would go nicely with tub doors like homeboy made

And your front bumper in my opinion is too thick it should be about the same thickness as the frame rails again just my opinion
Other than the front bumper its looking great

The bumper is something that has been bugging me too. At the time I wasn't sure how I wanted to build it and figured I could always cut it down later. Now that some one besides myself has noticed I'm changing it.
