Default Lockdown time passer - D90 Trayback (ish)

I need to keep my hands busy now and thought about stripping the horrible Austar chassis down again. Those axles are just useless! 3 test runs with no body and the pinions seem like they are about to pull out the axle housing. Chassis will be put aside for future builds as thats the only usable thing other than the plastic ‘training’ gearbox.

Lets start the stripdown and I’ll see what I can pull out the box to build something.

Stripped the thing down and put the chassis aside. Axles will get stripped to salvage the shafts and bearings.

Then I started scratching around and found all of this. The HG axles are a lot better than the Austar/Injora ones, and thats saying a lot...

Got the universal skid, Austar gearbox with a 35t Motor and lower links onto the chassis.

Some more scratching and we are hete for now.

Not the best link geometry but it will work. Wheelbase is right on 313mm. Now to figure out a battery and electronics tray. Servo will be AMS.

Worked on the body last night and this morning. Seems like its going to work. Just don’t have anything to put in that empty mouth of the D90...

Battery and electronics tray will be cut out of some Alu flat bar soon. Then just to make a bed for the back. Should have just enough tubing left for something real basic.

Got the tray done. Real basic.

I’ll swop the 9.5 Winch for a Z10 on my white D90 and put the 9.5 on here as the z10 wont fit in the front. The cheapo radio has a 3rd channel, just need to order a winch controller in time.

On to some pics:

Hopefully I get to doing the electronics tomorrow.

It's a bummer people get suckered into buying these cheap chassis that turn out to be low quality. You are making the best of a bad situation because the truck looks great.

Thanks Jato.

I bought the Austar parts to check the quality, an yes, could have spent it better elsewhere. At least the rails, some chassis hardware, bearings and axle shafts will be usable again...

Got it going. Will finish the parts tomorrow, paint it and take some pics.

And its done, for now...

Its running really good except for the horrible noise that the gearbox makes. Horrible. Plastic.
It will get replaced eventually. Axles are as good as HG’s get, added CVD’s and SCX10 knuckles on the front.

On to some pics..
And yes, I got lazy and didn’t spray any of the bare alu. Don’t feel like it.

I’ll sort out some sort of winch control later on...

There’s a sway bar hidden behind the rear axle.

Body stretches onto two pins as per the Gelande way.

Hinges forward for access.

Cheap 35t motor and 1040.

Battery tray and dodgy electronics ‘tray’

The servo seems quite cool for the price.

Hope the DIY body and ‘cage’ holds up.

Light bar still needs some power.

And the Lucky full flex shot.

I’ll use this as a loaner for friends. The radio is a Volatex 2ch I stole off my FY03.

Thanks. It would have been nice to have some more tube on hand though. I think it will be super fun for a friend out in the bush. Will charge up a pack on the weekend and check it out some more.

Should start stocking up mon more scale bits too...

I really like the "stance" of this truck. Looks like it will be a billy goat 🐐, go anywhere. Very impressive tube work, thank you for sharing.

Got the light bar wired up on a switch under the hood. It just needs a winch controller now.

Very cool looking rig! Nice tube work!

I kinda like the open look on the front end! It makes it look aggressive!

New rubber is always fun. Those Rock Beast XL's are very good tires.

The truck looks great. I just think it needs a grille to finish it off.
