Default Hannibal 2 - 2021 Bronco build

I've had a long hiatus from RC cars since I built and sold my early Bronco -Hannibal. I ended up selling every bit of my RC car stuff off except for my brake line bender and line cutter (I subconsciously must have known to keep these items).

Well with the new 2021 Bronco coming out, and New Bright making a hard body of it, the urge to build another RC truck has struck. So last night I ordered the New Bright Bronco off of Walmart, and today it was delivered (got here quicker that I thought it would).

So, I've decided to build Hannibal 2. I apologize in advance, but this project build is going to have a very slow progression, as we are also starting to build a new house in March. At the new house I am going to have a separate workshop off of the garage for RC building, MTB repair area, etc.

Well, here are a few pics of Hannibal, and some of the new 2021 Bronco.

Debating on the platform to put under this body between a TRX-4 and an SCX iii. I would love to make the hood open and be able to see the SCX iii "engine" sitting there. Any opinions on either of these platforms to start off with?

Link to my Early Bronco build of Hannibal

If anyone knows, I'd love to know what ever happened to Hannibal.

Unless you're set on portals have a look at the SSD Trail King, it has a scale tranny and engine (motor cover). Its basically a tweaked SCX10.2, same great link and steering geometry. It s a nice platform to build a scale rig with.

I missed the first build thread of Hannibal version 1, so I'm looking forward to watching this episode of Hannibal 2!

The pics of the original Hannibal look awesome! Great looking build! I'll have to go back and check out the original build thread!

Assuming you are wanting portals, since you're deciding between trx4 and 10.3. I would choose the 10.3.

less bulky/more realistic looking axles
if you get a builders kit, you can sell body set/tires to offset cost
frame rails are made to adjust for a shorter wheelbase
2-speed/dig function possible with stock trans (with the drawback of only meant to be used with micro servos. stock spektrum ones suck, maybe aftermarket are fine?)
option to convert to straight axle with factory parts (relatively cheap, too)

But that's just my thoughts.

Speaking of wheelbase, where does that bronco body land?

I look forward to seeing this build, thanks for sharing.

Thank you. that was my first scaler and I made several mistakes that I learned from. No battery mount location was the big one..

I am leaning to these more for the less bulky mid section with not having a huge transmission sticking up in the middle. Will give me more room for interior detail. With the 10.3 showing the most empty space in the mid section.

10.1

10.2

10.3

TRX4

Wheelbase looks to be right at 12" even on the new Bronco. Going to be really picky on tire size. I don't want anything that looks to giant, but I don't want to small a tire either.

The wheelbase is not 12” though. I spent a lot of time to get a TRX-4 G500 to the exact wheelbase needed. Fortunately I had a set of tires laying around that fill the wheel well contours perfectly. While these won’t be my final size tire (going a little smaller) the ones I had help me find the perfect wheelbase. (Fwiw, took me longer to modify inner fender shock towers than the links.).

In case anyone made the assumption (like me) that the other 2021 New Bright Bronco was going to be the same size as the yellow one, they're not.

Thank you for the update on the wheelbase measurement. I believe that I will be going with an SCX 10.3 for the platform.

Haha, thanks for the vote of confidence. Hopefully, I won't let you down.

After looking at the platform options I have decided to order an Axial SCX 10.2 builders kit, and pick out the other pieces as I go. I will figure out how to work around the transmission.

My suggestion, if you're going to go with the SCX10-II chassis, and you want to eliminate the clearance issues of the center mounted transmission, would be to buy the SSD Trail King Scale Transmission & Mount set. It is available as a separate item, so you don't have to buy the whole Trail King kit. As previously-mentioned, the Trail King is basically an upgraded SCX10-II, and the Scale Transmission will bolt right into an Axial SCX10-II chassis. I've got two SCX-10's with 11.4" wheelbases using this transmission. It gives you a lot of clearance for mounting a hardbody with full interior and it is also a performance improvement by placing more weight up front and low.

PARTS FOR TRAIL KINGTrail King Scale Transmission & Mount Set

You will need to source a different servo mount that relocates the servo to the front of the chassis in a horizonal position. SSD offers the Servo mount from the Trail King separately as well, if you want to use the real McCoy, but cheap imported servo mounts are readily available on Amazon and eBay that will do the job. On the Trail King, the battery mounts on a horizontal plate behind the trans. SSD includes the mounts for the battery tray in the same set with the Trail King servo mount. The battery tray itself is separate item. I just made my own out of styrene sheets to fit the smaller batteries I use.

This is one of my 11.4" Axial/SSD "hybrid" rigs. Works extremely well.

well a change has come about. Ordered a traxxas trx-4 sport kit to use for the platform under this body. Thought about and all my previous crawlers were axial, so I am going to try something different. I did receive my Harris safety silv 56 solder. So waiting on the brake line, and flux to come in.

I've built 3 Axials (SCX10 II, Capra, and 10 III), and while they are good, IMHO the TRX-4 platform of which we have 2, is head and shoulders above in all respects. I've subscribed and looking fwd to following your build, cheers!
