Default 1.9 Wild Worm Scaler

So I haven't built a scaler in a while (nor posted) and I figure it was time to do something different since my dad and I got back in to comp crawling. The original plan was to compete in C2 and just build the same old same old. But being competitive I wanted to do something that (I think) would give me an edge.

Enter worm drive axles.

And I know what you're gonna say:

1. They are slow
2. They get hot
3. They need lots of maintenance

But! I live in Florida so all of crawling courses are short and man made so they are better suited for tvp setups. So after doing the measurements I get a few benefits that I think will prove well on it's first comp.

1. About a .25" more clearance than a stock Scx10.2
2. Built in drag brake
3. Lower LCG with smaller trans

So heres what I got:

- Losi night crawler axles
- LNC esc (supposedly waterproof)
- LNC Transmission
- Scx10.2 Frame and temporary trans
- Assorted custom links
- Four piece aluminum beadlocks
- Disc brake weights
- Scale internal spring shocks (20wt oil)
- Steal shafts
- 25kg metal gear servo
- Duratrax deep woods all around
- Other misc scale stuff, ladders, winch bumpers, etc.

The end goal is to do an old school f150 halfcab hardbody but for now its a shorter wheel base so I could fit my titan body on it.

Nice Work Red Ronin! Where did you get the older Titan body from? Let me know how well you do at the comp.

It's an ancient HPI artifact from a time when T-maxx's ruled the land and the only crawlers available were TLT-1.

I'll have to get some photos of the axles in better light but here is a pick of the clearance I'm getting now. Maybe I can mod them to fit some KYX portals?

Wow, not bad on the axle clearance considering they're not portals. Nice wheels with the Deep Woods tires.

Little update. I’ve been using the the axial transmission with a 28t but it’s still a tab bit too slow. Eventually I will going with a 2 speed transfer case with a direct drive.

But for now I’ve been putting my 3D printer to work make a skid plate that takes the LNC transmission.

So I decided to do something more different. I figured I could mount the LNC tranny sideways up front and then order a transfer case. I designed a mount that wraps around the Losi tranny so the motor can ride up top. That way I can also make the bottom of the mount look like the bottom of an engine. For now I’ll test the vanilla mount. As soon as I know it’s good I can post it to shapeways Incase anyone wants one too.

Digging this always toyed with the same idea, picked up a Chinese 1:.75 ratio transfer case just for a little wheel speed boost but it's so wide it'll need trimmed and re tapped just to fit decent between some frame rails.

Which transfer case is that? I’ve seen the two speed one on eBay for about $50.

One of our local guys runs them in his class 1 and 2 comp rigs. He usually does very well. The 2 years that I competed, he got 1st place in C2. I think he is running an original LCC trans with a high kv brushless setup.

Do you know if he was running a pan hard bar or a 4-link? I made the pan hard mount for the axles but I think I like the 4 link better even with the little bit of bump steer

Also here is the most up to date design. I added a cross member support to wrap around the output shaft for added rigidity. I also lowered and pushed back the tranny about 5mm. Once I start my shapeways shop I’ll upload the plans. Should be a cheaper front motor conversion than most.

Nice mount! Which 3D modeling software are you using?
