Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Hello everyone. I’ve been tinkering on and off on this build and I need to get things documented before I get much further. The build: Started out as a nicely painted (Smurf Blue)(it’s not staying blue[emoji41]) original new bright 4 door jk with a slightly hacked interior. I had a new set of CBE rails that fit the lines of the JK quite well. I just needed to extend the rear for large body. From here I added some sliders, front and rear bumpers. Then started on the cage. The cage started out as 2 very long rods bent to shape. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...db53d07a98.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2d406b0cde.jpg Then I added some cross braces [emoji51] https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...08dbabfc9a.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3f77d86285.jpg Drop bars with mounting tabs behind passenger doors https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8814e55566.jpg Finally some dress up and added support. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...01a3a0cf9f.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...392ad92e20.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2b4995307d.jpg This brings us to current. I need to add some front tabs giving the cage 6 bolt in points. I need to sort rear shock mounting and mount the chosen drive train. More to come. |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Thats a good start BC! Very clean joints on the roll cage. Definantly goina watch this one come along |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig His tube work is top notch! I bought two of his custom rigs and they are A-1! |

Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Ooooooh... Ahhhhhhh... Purdy...... I like the look of the 4 door jeeps |
Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Quote:
Thank you Adam. I’m a yota guy for certain but that old new bright 4 door JK body is a hard one to beat. 13” wheel base and it swallows tires. Full depth interior. The current rollers are 4.75 with .225 SLW hubs and they have one tread sticking out. I could drop to a 4.19 for a totally different ( daily driver ) look. The body gives you crazy options. You could swap out hubs to say a .350 or so to make this thing mega stable while still maintaining proper tire coverage for class spec. I ordered a set of the 10.3 straight axles (crazy cheap Xmas price). I have a new set of fully built SSD diamonds under it currently. I saw the 10.3 axle under a recent Toyota build and really liked the look. I think one ton axles will look perfecto under a big ol JK. I’m also trying to decide on the transmission. I have a slick OG aluminum zuki front mount and a new TGH t-case(thanks Duke Minnix!). I also just acquired another new Pro VFD. The zuki/TGH combo adds some nostalgia to the build however I’m loving the Pro VFD. We will see…………. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig I love the vfd, got one in my gspeed v3, n in my v1c1 build. Plus the new vfd twin, which i cant wait to try out. I was goina go with the tgh fmm n one of their transfercases for the v1c1, but its hard to catch a tcase in stock sometimes |
Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Quote:
I couldn’t agree more. The VFD is a go to for custom builds. To date I have built 3 customs using the VFD paired with the SSD trail king offset front axle. YJ….. sold to Dave King. Kincer https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5a5b45c5f2.jpg TJ…. Built for Duke Minnix https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1656e88d88.jpg 4Rnr sold to Duke Minnix’s buddy Logan https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...39ff67b8bd.jpg All three were built using the VFD and it’s Pro variant. The Pro is 100% the go to if available. Adam I would like to try the phoenix in a custom buggy type build down the road. Mail man dropped the 10.3’s off today. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a8135b7d68.jpg First time holding and I must say they are nice axles for the cost. The plastic is beef. I doubt they would require upgrades to be reliable but SSD is offering some nice stuff for them. I am like you guys. Can’t leave things alone. More to come. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig I really need to get that TJ hooked up and on a trail sometime soon. |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Quote:
Yes sir you do. Very nice rig. I have been waiting on parts. USPS is slacking hard this holiday season. The SSD straight axle C hubs have proven a difficult part to obtain for some reason. SSD??? However some nice bits did arrive. Pro trans. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...adbd0386ba.jpg SSD straight axle components. I cleaned out the original grease and added my new favorite. The pink sticky stuff. Mobil 1 Synthetic. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...977af91a4f.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ee29802eda.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...579eb3871b.jpg Next will be installing the new drivetrain and redoing the suspension links so they work in harmony with the VFD and new axles. Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Missed this until now, very well done so far. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Quote:
Thank you sir. I have been making a little progress the past day or so. VFD and AR45 Straight axles are installed. I had to redo the front upper link and panhard bar only to convert from the SSD diamond AR44’s. I am terrible OCD so I’m going to shave the already welded on panhard frame mount and relocate it to match the new lines. Then I removed the flares and started sanding. I haven’t decided if I’m going to attempt a seat repair or just redo the driver and passenger area completely. I also am liking the look without the flares. I might try to narrow down the flares some. We will see. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...35a2557dc1.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d934ee7fb0.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cf583d1b55.jpg Plastic chubs. Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Thats comin along nicely! Kinda like the no flare look as well. As for the interior, it probably wouldnt take much to make a center console to hide the trans |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Adam you talked me into giving the original interior repair a try. I can cut it out and slap in some PRP seats worst case. I mixed up some mek and styrene scrap a few days ago. The slurry turned out nice and thick. So I backed all the holes on the hood and slowly poured slurry in the holes. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...241c9a80d5.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fe65ddd214.jpg Repaired the window pillar https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d4fae9c79d.jpg Then framed up the seats https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e48ab4b400.jpg Following 2 days of drying I was able to sand and add more liquid styrene. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c408b98f9b.jpg Hood is looking smooth https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1e60df9db7.jpg Seats are taking shape so I added more filler and added a center console. Its all wet in the pic. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...627eb0a40f.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Nice work travis! I need to get some styrene n stuff n give it a go myself. I see alot of members do fantastic work with it. Cant wait to see it progress further |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Quote:
Absolutely…. Styrene is super easy to work with. Sherwin Williams, had a gallon of real MEK not the MEK substitute. I would recommend sourcing the real stuff if it’s still available. No updates other than a possible suspension redesign…….. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6015726f3e.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5b95bcf9cd.jpg Tossed on some 4.19’s and man I am digging the overall look. I am planning on running the original rear flare in a slightly different position than currently mounted. The front fenders will get some type of treatment. I can’t do the wide front flare. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Alright. This is what I came up so far for fenders. I had an extra set of axial og flares. I couldn’t take the width of the provided front flares. So I ended up running rear flares front and rear. Mounted…https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...46219ba6b4.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b8d5e14006.jpg Trimmed and shaped https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0f17daa66b.jpg Oh….. Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig This is like watching a scaled-down version of Fab Rats YouTube channel - A very cool customized Jeep is being created! Killer fender work..."thumbsup" I have a set of discontinued RC4WD aluminum add-on fenders with an attached quarter panel that I have been searching for a body to install on - I, too have 2 pair of the same except I believe mine are fronts all 'round. I believe they were originally meant for the Axial Jeep Rubicon body, but I want to go a different route, and have a couple potential options - going to have to test them out and see which will be the eventual winner. https://cdn3.volusion.com/7z62e.xvk6...che=1597768542 |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Quote:
Thank you my man. I went with the OG axial Jeep flares to cut weight overall. I was considering some smaller diameter rod with aluminum or thin steel inlay. I guess that’s still a possibility. I’m not 100% sold on the current set up. Yeah I have a set of fronts to durok. If you removed the complete panel and attached the aluminum fender recessed. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...43227336c8.jpg I ended up ordering some of the ultra short Drav’s to match my current 90mm versions on hand. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...029c860dda.jpg Ended up shaving a set of the rcfabtabs shock mounts to accommodate the shorter Drav’s and lack of room in the rear. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...13be62d12c.jpg Fronts are set up pretty well as is. I need to burn them in. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...361f3468e4.jpg The tire size has been determined. I’m going with the 4.75 Krawler. The larger tire just fits the long body IMO. I think a 4.50 tire would be perfect but I don’t have any on hand and I just dropped some coin on some more suitable wheels. I’m really starting to fall for this build now she is standing on its own. The stance is pretty nasty [emoji40] https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5e00a48c92.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...828367831c.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...30fb36ce8d.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Yes, it looks pretty awesome! I hate to be that guy, but I really wish a few select tires were offered in a 4.5-4.6” size. Km3’s, krawlers, mtr’s… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Quote:
I appreciate it twade and you are correct. There isn’t much out there in the 4.50 range. I couldn’t just leave it alone with new wheels for this build. I ended up pulling the trigger on a set of the KM2 BFG offered by rc4wd. This tire is 4.56 I believe and I used them on a recent 4Rnr build I did. I really liked how they worked on that build so……. Mail man delivered last evening. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d9ff3884b3.jpg Couldn’t wait so I watched some football and went to work. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b0df62df74.jpg I’m thinking this combo will help dial in that iconic trail Jeep look. Filled the tires with some Dual stage CI foam and vented the sticky rubber properly. Need to work on body mounts next. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Wanted to show you guys the end stance of this thing. I still need to burn in the body mounts on the frame, figure electrical routing and paint. The Jeep is sitting just right imo and is nearing a test run. Pics. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e4a678c19e.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...030ed8f41c.jpg I unbolted the license plate bracket and all of its overhang. I found this hole right behind it that needs addressed. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...04b477e858.jpg And a little flex or lack their of. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...af27d9c693.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a7272284a4.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9a7887ecd4.jpg Lots of stuff with no rub. Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Dang travis, the jeep is lookin good! I dont have much patience for body work lol. Guess im goina have to learn. Think ive got an idea for the C1 build... |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig I'm liking how this Jeep is looking so far!"thumbsup" Great job on build! Tube and cage work looks excellent! Following along to see more! |

Adam I’m starting a C1 hardbody build after I wrap this one up. I have the goodies I just can’t decide what body to go with. I love those yotas and Jeeps the same I guess. Keep us posted brother. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Quote:
Thank you kind sir. I haven’t spent much time on the build lately. I did manage to complete the body mounts. I still need to do a little clean up but they turned out. I placed them so they could be adjusted with spacers or washers to adjust the ride height. Body mounts. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9332f91771.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8efab3981c.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8fbeea0e89.jpg They hold nicely https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ebc33a7777.jpg The build is coming along. I need to fill the license plate delete and go over the entire thing with a lighter grit paper. Then knock out some inner fenders. Paint is going to be tricky. It’s blue cold here in WV. I have a heated shop but I don’t like to spray with the doors shut. I will get that part figured out last. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Quote:
I bought a set for my ascender because 4.8s just look cartoonish on it. I thought because of the tread pattern I might give up a little performance for the sake of a more scale look. I gotta say that I have been thoroughly impressed with the performance of those tires on trails, and especially on the rocks. |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Damn nice work my friend! love the stance! "thumbsup" |
Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Quote:
I’m happy to hear this. I ended up running a set of them with the same CI dual stage foam I put in this set. They hooked up great! I prefer the smoother tread pattern on the rocks all day. The knobby tread tires cause a natural bounce/ separation at the point of contact. The smoother tire just spins and bites. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Quote:
Thank you kind sir. I’m loving the stance to. Nothing hits and everything cycles butter smooth. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig I made a bit of reportable progress. I managed to get the interior and cage painted. The interior turned out well enough. It will require some cargo and detail work. The cage turned out the part. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...45696ffb5a.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9d536e25fa.jpg The body. Oh this thing has been rubbed on. I am very close to paint. The license plate bracket deleted well https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...dc6740bfbc.jpg I have one little spot that needs a drop of liquid plastic. The rest of the jk is paint ready. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5845f02e64.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...06c2d500cc.jpg Next warm day it will have a different look. Re: Bananaclip’s 4door Trail Rig Dang travis, youve made some good progress brother. Interior looks great. Cant wait to see some color on the body |
