Wrangler 392

Hi! I have searched to the best of my ability, and failed to find any threads on the Wrangler 392. I'm thinking of setting out a quest to build one of these but wanted to see if someone had blazed the trail before me.

I think my pee brain is thinking about using say, the Vanquish Phoenix, Cross RC AT-4, or an Element as a base platform. Then I imagine I may have to get an Injora body from say eBay and tweak the potty out of it.

I'm sort of coming out of retirement. I rolled an Axial SCX10 about 7 years ago and just looking at the stuff that is out now is mind blowing. Thanks all!

Ah, purpose. Mostly leisure and maybe to enter into Class 1 "comps" at a local RC shop. It doesn't need to be a comp winner. I think I'd prioritize "realism" over the "winnerism."

Welcome back to the hobby Munk, it's a great time to be getting back into crawler/trail trucks! I've built kits of all of the 3 listed platforms, and while all are competent rigs, the Vanquish Phoenix is in a league of its own IMO. The chassis is great right out of the box and, with the recent price reduction, is actually cheaper than competing platforms once you're done making the usual upgrades.

On the rocks, I'm always impressed by how stable the thing is. And now you can choose between the portal or straight axle versions, a choice that other manufacturers do not offer.

Thank you very much for the input and images! It definitely helps to see what folks have done. And those rigs look terrific! I'll do some more reading on the vanquish. I'm sure the portals offer more "crawlability," but the straight axles would be more "scale." Lot's of options! If I can get this project off the ground, I'll be sure to shout out to y'all

Any info you have on SoCal comps would be appreciated. Every time I think I've found something I see it has a date on it around 2014 or so.

This look pretty good. Lexan body offers lower center of gravity. But...the hard bodies look nicer imo.

I'm all element right now only because my wife bought me a knightrunnwr last Christmas to use to build a replica of my 1:1 '21 tacoma. Brought me back to this bottomless pit and empty wallet of a hobby lol.

That said, only thing I could tell the wife I would want for Christmas cause I didn't want or need anything was either a trx4 or a vanquish. Knowing her she got me the vanquish.

Here's my thoughts on the class 1 side:

Others can correct me if I'm off on something but for SCALE POINTS iirc on class 1, vanquish is going to get you there the best. Because there are points for the functional transfer case. Which if I read correctly the vanquish is 2 speed and the "dig" can go rwd or 4wd set up.

The class 1 tire size limitation, portals give nice bit of an edge for the added clearance but brass portal covers become a must since class 1 more or less requires hard body (one small club here allows lexan, we don't do scale points though). But only 1 company makes them and their out of Spain, but got mine in a week. Which is gonna be bad if I'm wrong and my wife got me the trx4 lol.

Element is a very good option as well because of the stealth x transmission. Basically like having a bit of dig without having dig which isn't allowed in class 1.

Aftermarket support is much bigger for element but what I have seen it seems there is some good cross compatibility between axial and vanquish (which element and axial mixing isn't had either)

If going straight axle, I'd go for element, want the edge of portals and more scale points, go vanquish.

Here's my builds thus far:

Orange is a knightrunner/gatekeeper hybrid (gatekeeper rear, ifs front) geared towards class 1.

Tan one is geared towards class 2, Hilux cab on a gatekeeper.

Both are 3d printed hard bodies.

Last pic is my knightrunner that started all this. She's a beast lol.

Brian (Bmow) I blame partially for me going after these builds cause well, you see his builds lol. Their gorgeous. And the price of gatekeeper kits is hard to ignore.

Holy smokes! Thank you for the input! Yours and bmows rigs are awesome! A sharp looking scaler that can play in class 1 sounds fun, but maybe tough? The hard bodies shift that CofG just so high haha. I seen one class 1 comp toyo that was stupid capable. Brushless this and portals that. I don't think I want to compete at like, nationals. Haha. There's no way with all the kids I got. But. Something that I could humbly take to a USTE event would be awesome...

Hard body required for class one, so brass down low, suspension squished or droop.

My rigs sure ain't gonna compete seriously especially at national level. I do it for fun and the challenge. But my class 1 is way more about scale than performance. Independent front suspension and straight axle rear. Lots of scale bits for points but adds a lot of weight on the body.

I'm debating on doing a vanquish for a better class 1 and moving the orange taco to just general trail/crawler. Shell see some class 1 courses though just so I can tweak and see how far I can really push the IFS set ups.

If that was the class 1 I was expecting my knightrunner stock with better tires can get perfect runs every time lol. Heck much of that I think my trx4m could clear without any assists lol.

We sound like we are in similar boats! I'm eying the SSD Trail king chassis too. I'm willing to bet it's not as performance capable as the Vanquish Phoenix, but that faux engine should score some scale points

Ok! Couple parts list. Main question of the day is brushless or brushed? I think with the Lexan JLU body that I like, that will straight up plop me out of C1 anyway. So, this will be more of a scale/fun ride than anything for comps. And, that may have just answered my question...I'm leaning brushed

Yes, a programming card is needed, but before worrying about that, I'd try it w/ factory settings that are likely to work just fine for you. If you need a card, know that any of the HW cards will work, just note the specific functions detailed in the SE's manual for each function. Also, as they gave out the cards w/ every 1080 ESC ever sold, there are literally thousands sitting in people's drawers, I must have at least 6 of the things . Connect with fellow crawlers in your area, and someone is bound to have an extra one available for free of little $$$.
