Default Road to USTE in 38 days “Build Thread”

For a little background, my mother in-law got me a Vanquish Portal Phoenix kit for Christmas. Well I’ve decided instead of taking an old scale rig to USTE this year I would do a super quick build of the kit..
Parts ordering started last week…

Opened the kit up and got started today. Axles are assembled with CowRC udder butter and are ready to roll. (Sorry no pics of them in the process of being assembled.) I only decided to do this thread after they were assembled.

I don’t want to use the VFD Twin for this build so I’ll be utilizing a VFD Pro I had laying around already assembled.(less moving parts, No dig or selectable overdrive on this rig)

Wheels and tires are assembled, Gearhead Trail King 1.9 wheels, Proline 1.9x4.3 swampers with Deuces Wild single stage foams from Crawler Innovations.

Will try to update this thread every few days over the next month..

Well, ended up staying up a little later last night and got most of the chassis assembled, drive shafts put together and shocks are built.
I put the front links and steering links together. Planning on building a set of custom length stainless rear links today after work. (323mm wheelbase)

I ordered cantilever kit for the rear suspension from JS Cantilever systems.

Following along to see more! Excited to see where you take this!

Also, I just ordered my very first cantilever system for my new build. I'll be taken notes!

Finished up the new rear links this morning before work. UPS says I have a package out for delivery. Not sure which one it is yet though. Hopefully everything I’ve got in order arrives this week. Probably not going to have too much progress tonight as I have a paying side job to do.
We will see what the rest of the week holds.

This is the toughest deadline I’ve ever put on myself to finish up a scale truck…

Just got home from working on one of my “side” welding jobs that helps pay for this addiction and found these sitting in the kitchen waiting for me.

LC70 body
Interior kit
And IERC aluminum slider/body mounts

Links, axles and body mounts installed, transmission is just sitting in place.

Cantilever suspension will be shipped out tomorrow morning. May start unboxing and modifying the body while the rear suspension is in route.

Links look great! Looks professionally done!

I like the clean look of the IERC sliders! May have to get a set!

Excited to see the LC70 come to life! This is one body that I'd like to get someday!

Opened up the box on the body last night, started assembling and then realized they sent me the wrong one.. I received the body with the huge bushwhacker style fender flares and the fenders are factory cut to accommodate those.. been emailing back and forth today trying to send the body back and get a refund as they do not have the regular LC70 body in stock.

This also means it’s looking like I’ll be going back to 12.3(313mm) wheelbase. I could just use the body but I can’t stand those flares.. will be ordering a replacement body today to get it on the way while I deal with the other company trying to get my money back.

Ordered:

Received: (fenders are cut to allow flares to bolt on). Not really the look I was going for.

The advertisement is wrong on a few websites so I think it may have been an error on Killerbody and not the sellers. Either way I think things will work out.

So after a few conversations today, they sent me a return label and are supposed to be refunding the money for the body. Now I’ve got to try and re-box this as best I can and hopefully get it shipped back out tomorrow. I have the 12.3 (313mm) body on order from Amain now as I can’t find another 323mm that doesn’t have the huge fender flares. So my custom links and wheelbase is out the window.. But it is what it is..

I have a basically new Mamba X and Holmes Puller Pro stubby 3300 that will be going on this build. It was used for a couple 5 min Sorrca courses on another rig.

Made a little progress today. Wheelbase is back at 12.3”. JS Cantilever kit came in and I got that installed. Not a direct fit on VS410 chassis but worked out just fine with drilling one hole in the chassis. Need to adjust the ride height but probably need to wait until I have the body first.

May try to work a little more later tonight.

Been a rough week trying to find time to work on this. New body finally came in. Made sure everything fit on the body mounts ( of course I had them backwards) drilled and threaded the cab to fit the mounts and started hacking up the bed. Even with the cantilever suspension I still have to notch the bed a little. So I’ll find some way of covering the holes.
Ride height still needs to be adjusted.

Nice looking cantilever kit! Looks like a clean and simple install other than drilling new holes. Too bad you still had to cut up the bed to get the body to fit on there.

Four weeks!!!!! I see some late nights in your future!

Started making front bumper patterns tonight. Dropped the rear suspension a 1/4” but still feel it needs to be dropped more. Probably going to cut another 1/4” out of the connecting rod on the cantilever. Got to work 12 hour at least tomorrow and Saturday then probably half day on Sunday so gonna try to sneak in a little time to work on bumpers at lunches and break time.
