ok guys time for todays updates!! first i will start with the transmission mount and engine flipping. I decided that i wanted to flip the engine to the front side of the tranny. so i made up a bracket as close to the tranny side plate as i could. started by tracing the side plate and obviously cutting it out and drilling the holes. This will allow me to lower the body without having to hack up to much of the interior. not sure if i like the motor up that high either. i may still move the motor under the spur gear if i can clearance everything, but thats still up in the air. bracket turned out ok, probably could have done a little better job linning up some of the holes but it will work! i would really like to find another tranny side plate to use so it would match up perfect! next step was to bolt it all up with 3/4" spacers. this gave the perfect spacing for the pinion gear to line up with the spur gear. I used some 3/4" rod coupling nuts from home depot #10-24x3/4 and some 6x1/4x3/4 solid aluminum spacers again from home depot. (they didnt have enough of the aluminum ones at the time or i would have used all of them and not the rod couplers, but i can change that later.) Next up was mounting the tranny into the frame. first was the front mount. this one was pretty easy! It lined right up with the shackle mounts on the frame rail and was the perfect distance away from the front axle for the front drave shaft to work untouched! i used the rear shock mount for this because i didn't plan on using them to mount the rear shocks. some minor trimming was needed to fit the spacer collors from the spring bolts. Now that the front was mounted i was having some difficulty figuring out what to do to mount the rear of the tranny. I was off to my buddys house who was helping me do the body and he also helped out in a big way with a few other things! Thanks John if your reading you da man!! Here are the rear mounts he came up with! Now that the tranny was mounted solid we had a problem with the rear drive shaft being too short. 3/4" too short to be exact. so agiain with johns help we tore apart the driveshaft and made a longer one!! he had a piece of solid stainless steel hardened rod that was almost the right diameter so we turned it down in the drill press till it was the same diameter. then cut it to size and drilled the ends to accept the drive pins (boy was this a pain in arse!!) and put it all back together! stock one pulled apart new driveshaft next to stock one I now have a rolling chassis!! Next john started making the sub frame for the body to fit it all together. this will give it all support and help us line it up so we can plastic weld it! yeah he is going to plastic weld it! i cant wait to see this i wil post lots of pics of that trust me! any way on to the sub frame! This was a long process of clamping and bending and clamping and bending.... well you get the point! again i have to thank John for his help on this he was the man of the day today!! Nice rolled edge for a rock rail right under the plastic side steps! Well thats it for now What do you guys think so far? |

thank guys, progress has been a little slow. I got the body all mounted to the sub frame and got the 3 pieces plastic welded together. used a flat soldering iron to feather the seems together. again i have to thank John for all his help with the body. I am waiting for some body filler to dry so i can sand it smooth. sorry don't have any updated pics as of yet i will try to post some up tomorrow. its really starting to come together! just have to figure out what to do with the back half of the roll cage, not really happy with what we have come up with to this point.

Sick 4 door. Like the chassis your using to, isn't that the same as the bruiser chassis?

Ok its been a while, but here are some updates to the build. Got the front shocks all mounted up!! Also got the front servo mounted and added the drag link so steering is all done! I wasnt happy with the way the rear suspension was mounted because it was making the rear end sag. it wasn't level with the front end. so i had to give the rear a little lift. i made some spacer blocks out of a derlin cutting board and used them to mount the rear suspension. now she is all level and ready for the body!! and finally, i got some more work done on the body. I got the cage work all done. just needs sanded and painted. still a little fill work to do on the main body as well, then its ready for sanding, and soft top! thats it for now! its coming along...slowly but surely!! |
