If you use a few coats of High Build Primer and sand in between coats you should be alright. We use high build alot at work when we are doing custom dashes and rear deck lids before we vinyl wrap or suede wrap to get the smoothest finish with no sanding scratches.

Can I primer right over the existing paint? Or should I sand it down?

You can paint over existing paint aslong as you clean it good and scuff the surface with maybe a kitchen scouring/scrub pad...this way the primer has something to stick on

badger,
you can always use a gloss black, then go over it with a spray can of testors flat clear. i'm pretty sure they call it 'dull-coat'.

I second this one. I love the look of this finish/color. I used that on my tuber and it looks nice to me. Not too bling bling, but not looking like black primer where it clearly needs a paint job.

Love the finished product by the way. Looks awesome.

My understanding in the black paint world is the order is as follows:

Flat black - Satin black - Semi gloss black - Gloss black.

I saw Satin black everywhere yesterday and the cap on it did not look any different (glossy) then the flat black so I did not get it. Are you guys saying that Satin black has "some" gloss to it?

Read what we are talking about again. I am not looking for "glossy black".

the best way i can describe satin vs glossy, is you know chrome rims are really shiny = glossy
the stock t-maxx rims are satin, some shine but not overly blingy
glossy

satin

Good description. I think I will use the Krylon flat black first then try satin black if I am not happy with the flat.

Thanks.

Oh and did I mention how much I hate painting ****? I should have just payed someone to do this.

haha yeah paintin can be a *****. especially when you have to get into little nooks and hard to reach spots.

I'm currently painting my mp3 player satin black. I was going to go with flat, but it looked to, well...flat, so i tried gloss and it was so shiny, so i went with satin. I wouldnt go by just what the can top says. I believe (not sure) that those tops are dyed that color, not painted, so i dont think they can be very accurate when it comes to something so subtle as the difference between flat and satin. I had to buy flat, satin, and gloss to find the right color and i have the tops in my hands. If my life depended on me telling apart satin and glossy by the tops, i wouldnt last long.

Im 99.999% sure the bottom tubes are just held on by a threaded rod. Just remove/unscrew the lower tubes and replace with same size round head screw...just like the center tube
