Renslip's Tuber

I was so impressed and motivated with Greasy's tuber build of his Bruiser, I decided to build my own Jeep. I grabbed some 3/16 tube this past weekend and started brazing. I'd have to say it take quite a bit of time, patience, and the right tools to do a quality job that I'm used to. This is after around 36 hours of fab time, and 20 feet of tube. Mindyou I would have to say that I used around a length up in mistakes/I didn't like it. I left the rearend stretched out and followed the body from front to back. I also narrowed the front frame rails from the cab forward so I could angle the shocks maybe a bit more than I normally would. Its looking like it may end up at 14" wb. Enough words.....pictures, now...

More info to come as its surfaces...

That looks really good man, you definately took your time on the tube work, and it payed off"thumbsup", can't wait to see this one done

Renslipevol 07-24-2008 11:22 AM

Thanks man, Im really happy the way its turning out. I should be getting my parts bag from RC4WD today. The front end is going to take alot of time I think. I've had alot of fun building this one. I also got in the mail the other day a TJ Grill from The Scale Shop, I picked up the Hilux headlight buckets and lenses the other day too and my LHS.

Looks "right" which I think is the best compliment! Nice work.

Progress

Had a bit of a setback this weekend on this chassis. Just like I read in GreasyPete's build, I had to increase the width of the chassis 10mm. It worked out just fine. I found the front end took about twice as long as the cab rearward did. Its just alot of things are going on that need to be taken into consideration. The frame and tube work are 98% done, with the 4-link mounts and the tranny-tray a whole other project in my mind. But it should take me a few more mandays and I may have a roller...Anyways, My presents arrived from RC4WD; These beadlocks are so nice. Nice job (Cory, RPP) on designing these wheels. I need to take a break from building this monter before I become careless. Let me know what you think and if you have any input, good/bad, let'er fly.

Im not really in Calgary...Do you know where Langdon is? Its close enough.

These scratch-built chassis are like my children, I'll goto hell if I sell it. Well have to gettogether and do some trail riding somewhere...This is finally going to be a rig I can just take and drive...not like my others....always a fixerupper.

Mmmmm Beer. Well, I plugged through it this week and I've got the rear axle mounted. I had a real joy getting the RCP axles into the Bonusline lockers, for some reason, one axle went it about 2mm too much. Then I bent the axle pulling it out. Straightened it out with my straitener; Hammer. Iam going to get the front axle on 'er tonight. I had to move the rear shock mounts to a better location. Straight across the rear like that, I don't know what I was thinking. I will post some pics tonight as well. She looks like a root ripper.

Sorry guys, my parents came over, I had to put it away and entertain. I did get both axles on. The rear is perfect, the front on the other hand needs some adjustments. Pics tomorrow morning....

Progression/Regression

Well, I did get the front axle on. But there's a bit of a problem, Im going to either have to move the front axle back about an inch, or find a way to mount the steering servo in behind the grill on the frame; which means I'll have to make a bellcrank. I like the wheel base, but when the front suspension is compressed, it will be limited by the grill contacting the servo. But there may be hope without moding too much, Im hoping if I fab up some new front shock mounts to make them about 1/2" longer I may get the travel I want without the servo hitting the grill. But then again, I was thinking, When the hell is the suspension going compress both sides all the way to the bottom of the shocks? Anyways, I should have made the front shock mounts so that I could just move them down If I wanted, like I did when I changed the rear shock mounts.

Update

So its been a while since I posted some pics of my progress. Im almost done with the chassis itself. I was really unhappy with the steering servo on the axle so, I moved it to the chassis. After alot of tinkering with the steering setup, I got it down to 98% NO Bumpsteer! "thumbsup" . Now that I got the servo out of the way, Im able to make this happen.

I have the transmission plate made. Now I just have to braze some sheet metal on it for mounting panels, some kind of interior......man there is so much more to do. I just want it to be done already....
