Default 2.2 Clod crawler

Well, since Ace posted up the videos of our first crawlers it made me want to go check out the pics we had of them. This is what The Duke looked like back when it was called Rashender. That means king of kings in Hebru or sumpin, I caint really remember anymore.
The scale crawlers were so much fun, I really loved the look with the Stampede wheels, Masher 200's and realistic steering setup.
The Duke will be reborn as a scale crawler this winter; sporting a steel frame, full rollcage, bruiser axles, lights, and Losi JRX2 tranny. Hope you like the pics.

Here it is next to my daughter's rig

Here is the steering setup. The sevo is linked to a bell crank mounted on the side of the frame to look like a steering box. I made it from airplane steering arms (what else ). Not as efficient as an axle mount but werked good and looked scale as hell !

So the top rod is the tracking bar, my early setup had no triangulation in the links because I wanted to use a track bar just like my 1:1 Bronc. The second bar is the drag link, it connects the "steering box" to the knuckle. The bottom rod is the tie rod of course.

Even though some of us are into the comps, we still love the scale rigs.

Killer. I dig the spare tire carrier... was it or is it functional(swing out wise)?

Ya know, I'd like to see more scale rigs be built... mostly 'cause they can look so cool.

Thanks toyo, no it wasnt funtional. I planned on making it swing, but I got impatient and just welded it to the bumper. My next one will werk though.

Thanks 'Zilla, yeah, I hope things get big enough to support a scale class someday. I am all for it.

Thanks for the relies guys.

Also, maybe a scale class would get some bruiser's off the shelf.

Ha, MAYBE. Those guys would probly cover the bodies in bubble wrap though.

Not that I blame them, thats why I want to build a Bruiser-like crawler; if I owned an original I'd prolly never drive it either.

I'd be down for a 2.2" scale class. Some portion of the score being judged on crawler looks would be awesome.

Thanks alot Grizzly, now I wet myself! I dont know, but I think you just changed my mind to go from 4 to 2 link. You still had decent articulation. Excellent rig and you cant beat the Bronco bodies!

Thanks Bigbadwhitey, The Jero platform is sweet also. I have a Tamiya Hummer that I locked up the diffs on and me and Ace used to have a blast at the construction site long before I ever built a Clod.

Badtodabone, The amount of detail werk to build a scale crawler is overwhelming. I could not do it for a price that anyone would want to pay. My time aint cheap and I am already swamped.

Thanks BSG, The limiting factor was the steering setup, the suspension (even with the track bar) was capable of much more travel but the steering would bind with much more than I had. It was at about 4.5 inches in 1/8 scale so that was just perfect for a scale 36" of arti.

Here is the kind of crawling we used to do, no picking it up when you got stuck. Ya had to get "the strap". Big fun!

Maybe Ace will post a pic of his AWESOME rear shackle on Big Green.

Oh, and Broncos for Life
Thanks guys!

Hey Mr.W, I dont think I can say I like one better than the other. I have always loved scale crawlers. I was about 12 when the Toyota HiLux came out and have wanted one (and all the Bruiser variants) ever since so I have always been into scale 4x4 rc's. It wasnt until a year or so ago when The Duke evolved into a Clod crawler that I realized how much fun that was. To me they are equally fun, but they are different kinds of fun. Climbing stupid hard stuff with The SuperDuke is a blast but takin a scale crawler over to a constuction site and crawlin over dirt clods is just as much fun to me.

BSG, That's 2DS, it belongs to Ace. It rocks an RC10 tranny, steel frame, and custom machined aluminum axles. Badass little rig, more on it here:

BBW, I love tubers, did you build it yourself? I would like to build a tuber of either the Sniper or Karnivore from Avalanche Engineering. Those two are my favorites. 35" Goody's? MTR's? They are a great tire, yer gonna love em. I had the most fun with my Bronc when it had 36" tires I think.

Thanks Guys!

Thanks Tuffguy, I appreciate it. Thanks for the site too, I have never seen it before, gonna check it out. Hows yer RC10 Jeep? That thing looks sweet. I built a crawler out of a Traxxas 4Tec sedan car. Man that thing werked great, the CG was stupid low on it so it would climb crazy stuff. Looked real good with the Blackfoot type F150 hardbody.
