Ok, so it wont be that little when I slap some rubber on it. Anyway, I started this project about two weeks ago, I got sick of never going all the way with a scaler so I decided to do it this time, I started looking around for YJ's but kinda out of my price range and alot are popping up every where. I decided to sit on it a couple days... The next day I went on my usual thrift store runs only to look down and see this nikko R/C TJ sitting on the ground, I grabbed it and was stoked, first thing I thought of was I need a tape measure! A little old lady next to me happen to have one and gladly pulled it out of her purse and allowed me to use it. The dimensions are almost identical to the YJ so for 7.99 I figured what the hell, I could probaly use something on it at some point anyway. Well I quickly knew where I wanted to go with this project, I wanted to build a scaler that I was proud of and actually want to keep for more then a month. Going for as scale as possible, its a huge advantage that most of the interior is a bolt on system. ![]() Ended ip pulling out stock seats and using some recaro seats I had sitting around, they ended up being a much better fit. Raised them off the floor and BAM! ![]() The dash is almost 100% stock how it came in the Nikko R/C, all I had to do was lay down some paint. ![]() I did have to drop the floor, I was sick of the elevated look of everything so the back and front had to go down, I did opt. for a functional tunnel though. ![]() As it sits now. Its a really cool body the grill, windshield, head lights, and a radiator are all snap on inserts. ![]() I have also opt'ed for a warn style rock slider out of some styrene. I still have tons of detail work to do, along with some touch ups, body paint radiator, bumpers and cage, but its coming along body wise. Now the tech stuff, I trade to use what I had sitting around for most of the parts, what I didn't I worked out some trades and what not. I had one scale chassis, it was a MSD ute, it was way to big, buts its what I had, so I cut both sides of the chassis down. Fits now. I picked up some parts of a transfer case from Crawlin Coles, I needed bearings and gears, but it happen to be stuff I had sitting around. I also had some axial axles so that made it an easy axle choice. Im still some what in limbo with what tires and wheels to use. Im thinking about some roc lox, but they might be a bit to monster trucky, we will find up in mock up. Ty

Looks like a good start. What are you using for running gear? And is there going to be any tube work? I'm getting ready to start a scaler for myself finally. Just need to get Rodney's done first.

Sounds good! Can't wait to see it. You going to do any of the scale events?

Well I spent a ton of time this weekend building stairing and trying to figure things out with my creation. I grabbed a few more parts I had sitting around (old links, etc.) I mocked it up with the stock axle width and I just could not get it to sit as low as I wanted and still have the aggressive profile I was after, I kept trying to figure out what it needed, I almost went to a different axle, then I realized I had some wideners sitting in a bin, slapped em on and got a profile I was more comfortable width. I also starting doing some detail painting work, and scavanged some shocks from one of my RC18t's. they look alright but I only get 3" of flex overall, I might do something else, but Im trying to stay away from a droop suspension set up. ![]() I had some 2.1 inch traxxas (pin slot) wheels sitting around since I built the croc 1 and never did anything with them. I mocked them up and realized there is no way they will fit the bead. So Im keeping my options open for some new wheels... ![]() I have to admit the Roc Loxs look awesome, but they are way way way bigger then the 5.2" RC4WD website does, hell they are bigger then my Rovers... Despite the size I kind of like the monster trucky look she has right now. ![]() Outside of tire to outside of tire I am sitting at 10 7/8" as of right now... ![]() Im pretty happy with most of it so far, I, however have know idea how I am going to mount the body or where in the chassis the steering servo is going to go... Im trying to make it really capable and am well aware that there are some strict guidelines for competition for these, but I am thinking rear steer or dig, not to mention a winch... I can always disengage it for comps. Ty | |

damn, didn't realize the rock lox were so tall, can you post a pic with a ruler next to them? I've got rovers on my big hummer for now, but something a little larger, yet still capable would be perfect, plus the tread pattern is cool too.

As of now link geometry is a little up in the air, the rear will probably get a three link and the front is going to get some type of panhard set up to account for the steering. Thanks man. Quote:
