Trail Tough FJ40

Since the 2010 MSD scale nat's is coming up real quick I thought it's about time I start a thread on my Trail class and possible TTC rig. Originally I was planning on running my X-Trail Flatbed in the Trail class but after seeing all the other cool 2.2 rigs going to Montana I knew a last minute build was in order.

I've been collecting parts now for the last 2-3 weeks but started building just last week. Here are my plans for the specs and features:

- SCX10 chassis kit
- AX10 axles with HD gears and SR3 steel diff locker, Axial C's, Vp knuckles
- Axial trans with Robinson Racing steel gear set
- Holmes Hobbies 7t puller motor
- Holmes Hobbies TorqueMaster BR-XL speed controller
- Hitec 5955 servo
- MIP drive shafts
- 2.2 Rok Lox
- Create A Crawler EZ-locs
- HandBros Honcho CMS kit
- SCX10 aluminum shocks

I want a stout rig to beat on so I made a full set of MadDogRC links using 1/4" 6061 aluminum tubing, M4 set screws and REVO rod ends. I made the links the same length as the Honcho so that the HandBros Honco CMS kit bolts right up. The 12.3" wheel base is somewhat short for this type of rig but I'm thinking of reducing the 2.2 Rok Lox's a bunch.

I clearanced the servo mount a little to allow for front bumper mounts then I bolted up the servo and Racers Edge servo horn.

Out back I brazed up a quick 4-link mount, don't look to close though I have to fix a joints before I paint.

This weekend I went to town with the scissors on an old BushWacker body and then started the cage.

Been along time since I updated this build, lots has changed. I sold the CAC wheels and didn't like the 2.2 lox's so I figured I needed a new wheel tire combo. I found some near new Pyro rings for my old RC4WD BL02N bead-locks and had to use the 2.2 Proline TSL's. Also dug out my NIP Proline FJ40 body...

I have the next week off work so the last couple, three days I've been cutting, bending and braising metal. I fab'd the winch mount, stinger, CM-servo mount, pan-hard bracket, and shock towers. I also included threaded fab tabs on the cross member so that I can use stock SCX10 radio box.

Hmm, I bought that body off another RCC member like three years ago for $80 :shock:"thumbsup". Been sitting in a box for all that time just waiting for this build to come along...

Thanks, the new beadlock rings really brought those old wheels back to life.

Sure, do what you will with it. I ditched the Hand Bro's mount because I couldn't get the body to sit as far back as I liked. The positioning of this mount allowed me to flip the servo 180 degrees.

I wish i came across this thread when i built my LJ. Those NB jeeps have no room under the hood when it comes to a lowrider jeep build so i had to "think creatively" when it came to mounting the servo. Had i seen this, i would have done the same thing. Thanks!

I gotta hand it to ya for have the cleanest workspace when building your rigs. Mine always starts that way but 1/4 into the build and i cant even find a screwdriver on my table. Nice!

Not much of an update but did get some milestones accomplished today. I cut the back end of the chassis off and fab'd a double tube transition. Then I cleaned up the cage that I made a few months back and attached it to chassis.

Tomorrow I need to get going on the the bed and interior metal work...

nice build i will be watching and learning to

Mad4Rnr 12-31-2010 12:40 AM

Nice comments guys.

I didn't feel creative yesterday so didn't really get anything done...but today I got rid of the mental block and did a bit of fab work. First I bent the secondary roll bar and made up the front seat mounts.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...z/DSC05143.jpg

Then I bent the rear bars and attached only the lower. Now that I have the final vision in my head I should get the main cage complete tomorrow.
