the Angry Monkey - story of a southern Truggy

I have been itching to start a 2.2 rig for awhile now. My wraith is pretty beat up and I want something with a full body..... of some sort.
I am a Toyota boy at heart and Truggys just make sense to me when it comes to a comp rig.

Pretty sure these 2 1:1s that I am leaning toward:

I know I want the skull grill - 1:1 and RC, Ballistic Fab is the only guys I have ever seen do that.

Holy offset BATMAN!

Waiting on a few more parts to come in - fingers crossed tomorrow and I can get this show on the road.

Re: the Angry Monkey - story of a southern Truggy

There both pretty cool. The first one would look really good for a 2.2 scaler.

Cool idea , man the second one has some impressive axles under it , but I agree the first one would be cool as a 2.2 rig.

I'd vote for the cagework on the first one. The second one is pretty bland. I actually have the same pics in my truggy project folder! Built as a 2.2, this will be sick. Subscribed!8)

Re: the Angry Monkey - story of a southern Truggy

Sorry for the slow start guys - Life hit me like a box of rocks after my first post. Entire house got sick, the work picked up, trying to buy a house, and had a hanger fill with fire surpression foam. Gotta love it!

My basic want is a capable C3 rig on the quick and cheap. I need it by Feb for our UT vs NV Shootout and I don't want it to weight a TON like my ratrod. On to the photos:

So every project has to start somewhere. Torn my wraith down to a box of parts and collected a few other things...

I have 2 honcho bodies that have been sitting around - might as well use them.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8095/8...9c45b96b_o.jpg
This WB is alittle long in the rear, but I am also going to trim up the body here and there.

If you have not done this to your Tranny or other plastic pieces - I highly suggest it. Brass inserts from McMaster. Open the hole with a drill and press them in - Done Deal!
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8211/8...f8390035_o.jpg

On to the Frame - using an SCX10 frame and skid. but I wanted to lower the skid and move it forward. This left a handful of holes that weren't needed. So I filled them. Sand them down - once painted youll never know they were there.

Bad photo but you can see the drop skid mount.

Re: the Angry Monkey - story of a southern Truggy

Here is the skid mounts - didn't like the holes for the skid that wasn't being used.

If your a welder - get a piece of brass. Makes filling holes easy. You can see how the weld side filled with the back side gave me a slight bouble to sand down.

Miss measured, but added some speed holes - looks better now.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8475/8...4d9998ef_o.jpg
All tacked in with the front 3link and rear 4link brackets. You can see where i notched the bottom of the frame so the second skid bolt fits.

Here is CMS bracket tacked in, steering arms are temp - I will lathe some fresh ones soon.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8369/8...2b60997f_o.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8469/8...d97230f9_o.jpg

And a final ride height check - I am still searching springs. Hard to tell but as it sits: 2 5/8 under skid with a good 10-20mm up travel on shocks. Capable of full bump of 2in or less.

I need to make some more brackets and crossmembers to stiffen up the chassis and trim the honcho body down. Then I can start on the real work with cage work.
Might even be able to get the wife on the lathe to make me some permanent links.:flipoff:

Looking good. I wondered what happened to this build but it sounds like your hands were full

Very nice work sir. The 1:1s are mean looking too. Love the skull grille.

Re: the Angry Monkey - story of a southern Truggy

Krawlr4life - I can not speak enough good things about those inserts. I like metal on metal threads, plastic bad! Just take your time opening the holes then press them in.

Paleblue46 - Thanks"thumbsup" Yeah it got crazy for a little bit. But I am use to it. Uniformed life always seems to throw curve balls. but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hoosierdady - That is the biggest thing I want from that build. I am not one for fully coping another rig. Even if it is to make a replica. But that grill is to crazy. ANd since it was built many years ago, I can't believe no one from here or pirate has done it since.

Thanks again for looking guys - Back to my CAD work!"thumbsup"

Lol not sure yet. Still playing ideas in my head. I could be done as simple as some black vinyl.

i cant beleive your ride height is only 1/4'' lower than mine and yours looks way lower what the crap !! maybe its my high quality pictures :ror: cause it looks lower in person but not in pics.i dont know .

I will get better up tonight..... It could be I read the tape wrong.
Or maybe it would be better if you just came over to put them next to each other......

Re: the Angry Monkey - story of a southern Truggy

lol ! im on my way ! hey what keeps those brass inserts from spinning are they glued in ? what size are they tapped for?

doublej 01-19-2013 08:19 AM

Re: the Angry Monkey - story of a southern Truggy

They are press in, they have knurling on the outside so when you screw the first bolt in they expand and grab the plastic. And these are M3 but you can get different sizes.

Re: the Angry Monkey - story of a southern Truggy

somebody needs to tell axial and the rest about those inserts maybe then the freekin plastic threads would become a thing of the past ! theres nothing worse than putting your rig all back together and a tranny bolt keeps spinning or truss bolts ect. :x thanx for the tip bro im deffinately ordering a case of em !:ror::ror:

No worries, I agree. I am hard on my rigs so plastic doesn't las long. Plus I got the tip from someone else on here - pass the love!

I got alittle done today but not enough - I was helping dieselFuel with his KOH buggy. See what happens tomorrow. I need this a roller so I can start on the body.
