| Die-Laughing's 2.2 Sledge Hammer!! Ok.. well, I've been wanting to build a KOH style rig for a minute now so.. Today, I decided to start on it. I'm just going to look at pictures of other rigs that I like and then go to town freestyle fabbing. All the chassis work will be out of 3/16", 5/32" & 1/8" solid stainless rod and it will be mig welded. Ok.. let's begin. First, I made some chassis rail type things out of 3/16" x 1/2" stainless that will bolt to a wraith skid plate and accommodate a 3/16" rod at the top.. Then, I attached my first piece to build from.. There is a left and a right side.. The test subject is a stock wraith.. I then connected the two halves.. more strengthening.. and here's where I left off for the day.. I'm pretty sure this is going to be setup for wraith width axles, solid front & rear. I still need to figure out an overall direction with this build.. what body panels am I going to use? buy them? make them? I really like this rig that I've been looking at for ideas.. I might stick to something like that.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ohhh!! AND LOOK!! There will be some to share with my friends! To be continued... Thanks Guys! Ok.. I got some more done.. I want to have the rear section fully enclosed with paneling on the sides & roof and also have a hinged rear hatch door that will open/close like a small compartment. started eyeballing how I wanted the cab to look.. kinda hotrod-ish.. Then.. I decided to concentrate on building just one rig to see how it would turn out.. because, there were times when i didn't like how something looked and I had to go back and change it 4 times.. i didn't want to risk that anymore so, I worked on one rig but, I also wrote down dimensions, measured, cut & bent enough material to do the other rigs but, i just didn't apply the pieces to the chassis on the others just yet. When I'm sure its going the direction I have in my mind, I'll just have to build the other rig with all the pieces that I already have stock piled. So far I'm diggin' it. Now.. there was a short time where I didn't take a picture of every addition so, I'll explain what I did and post a few pictures.. I currently have the rig sitting on my only spare set of tires (1.55 stompers) with spacers under the tires to bring axle center line to about 3".. I did that to simulate a 6" tire on there which is a little bit bigger than the max size for Class3 2.2 tires. I plan to have this rig setup to run SCX/XR width axles and 2.2 tires. Ok.. you can see here That I started on the front end.. added some "hood bars" with shock mounts.. I'm liking the shape of this thing.. rear "floating" shock mounts.. I plan to add more bracing.. front shock mounts.. mounted to "hood bars" I call it the hood bars because I think I'm going to panel the shape of those bars and it will be the actual hood of the rig. Now.. in this picture you can see that I changed out that "old" front cab cross bar that I had (seen in post #1).. I changed it out for what you see in the picture below. I think it flows better with the overall shape of eveything. and, you can also see that i added some slider type thing that widened the chassis a little bit. I think it's sitting at 6" wide right now. There's obviously more work to do.. This is just roughed out into the overall shape with 3/16" material. I still have to do detail with with 5/32" & 1/8" material. bracing, strengthening, etc. It should add some "dimension" to the rig. Thanks! |

I'm not very happy about how the welds are turning out.. cosmetically I mean.. so, after I have everything tacked together and ground down, I'm going to go over key areas real quick with brazing.. kinda get everything flowed together nicely. I've also been second guessing making 4 identical rigs although that was the original plan. I planned to have them go to my buddies when they were done.. Not for free but, buddy price.. ya know. My buddies Jason, Chris & Johnny showed most interest in getting their hands on one of these but, I purposely haven't set anything in stone and I don't really plan to until they are done just because things could change.. but, Do we at all mind having the same rig? I don't really care personally. I guess what I'm trying to say is.. is there something I can do to personalize these things without building 4 completely different rigs? hmmm. |

Love it man!! Build it like ya wanna man. All I really want is a base, that attaches to a wraith skid, to build from. I'll just have to get some 3/16", etc. rod through ya. Last edited by thzero; 02-03-2013 at 11:29 AM. |

Alright.. I'll get you a platform to build off of put together. Considering you're going to take a pass on owning one of these beautiful rigs, I'll have to offer one to an RCC member when it's done!
