Default Inspired by Devlin. Class 3 "Thing"

Devlin(hotwheels000) has inspired me to finally build a Class 3 VW. With a lot of encouragement and help from Tim(Warpig) I am now actually building pieces.

I will be building a VW Thing body from scratch out of styrene.

The red Thing in the pick is for size reference.

Specs and pieces to be used.

13.5"-14.0" wheelsbase.
Axial SCX-10 axles with XR universal mod using full width universals.
Creation-Fab XR width Beef tubes.
Axial heavy duty hardened gears.
Gearhead R/C 2.2 slotted mags
Pitbull Rockbeast 2 tires
Crawler Innovations foams
Over/Under transfer case.
MIP Drive shafts.
Axial trans of some sort.
I have a MMP for ESC, motor, servos and 4PL will come later.

Some of my pieces I've collected.

Picked up a set of the Gearhead slotted mags from a member on RCC.

First thing I did was Narrow them to 1". Got the Pitbulls mounted up with some Crawler Innovations foams.

Got the axles put together.

Made a skid.

My first attempts at silver soldering. Got the tabs on. The tabs will get cut off between the two holes. I made them long and with 2 holes so I could screw them to a plate I drilled to space them evenly when I soldered them. I will cut them off and use the other ends for mounting tabs elsewhere.

You'd better hurry up Dennis, I'm going to need my torch back pretty soon.

Great start!

Tim, I've decided you're not getting it back, it's really handy to have.

Made a stand for the skid and attached it to a piece of plywood. Now it won't roll all over the place. Got the lower links mocked up. Now to put on mount locations for the upper links.

The first two. Made a fixture plate so I can build the axle trusses for the front and rear axles. I am working on it.

Yeah Devlin, the front will have 3 link and panhard mount. The rear is going to be 4 link.

Made a couple cross members today. The holes outside of the rails are tapped 1/4-28 and will be for bump stops I will be making later. Once my wheelbase is finalized I will solder them to the tube.

Upper link mounting points soldered on to chassis.

Front axle truss almost done, got the link mount and tabs to mount to axle, just need to do panhard mount now, then the bracket on the chassis.
My soldering needs a bit of work. The hardest part about this is lack of precision. Trying to do something every day.

Nice progress D, I thought you were machining the trusses ? You may want to look at putting a support from the truss to one of the nuts/bolts at the pumpkin. You will have a lot of stress on the outer mounts with those big C3 tires.

I wanted to try this first. I still may end up making them out of aluminum.
