Stealth bomber the Class 3 build This is my first full on build with my own chassis. It features a lot of my own improvisations on the Wide Open Design Evolution chassis. The styling of this buggy is what I would describe as a late 60s muscle car, flowing curves, pronounced lines, pretty much just dreamy. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/07/a9uhetyt.jpg So onto my actual build it features; -Derlin ax10 skid -Hot racing Aluminum trans with steel gears -CC MMP w/10A external bec -motor; I don't even know yet -scx10 axles from a previous build (beef tubes, strc aluminum chubs, strc aluminum knuckles, strc steering links) -VP bent ti lower links (rear) -Custom stainless lowers (front) -Axial bender servo plates with GH servo mounts -hitec 7980th front servo, solar d772 rear (temp) -rc4wd 2.2 BL01N wheels -pitbull XORs and RB2s Here's some pictures of the chassis http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/07/umu8eme3.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/07/4asajy6y.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/07/a6etemuq.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/07/naqebupa.jpg |
Re: Stealth bomber the Class 3 build OK looks like you got skills great lookin cage ya got there I like"thumbsup" |
Re: Stealth bomber the Class 3 build Great start ! Looks like you got welding knowledge already so this should move along nicely. Look forward to seeing your progress ! |
Once I finish rear (x brace, shock hoops, etc) I'm going to start on the front. Then I'll make the templates for the skins. Then all the welds will be ground smooth. After that, off to powder coat for a nice metallic lime green finish! Panels will be black. I have a thing for that color scheme haha This was its previous state before the cage fab http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/07/jebuhuvu.jpg |
Worked on the bomber tonight. I've pretty much finished it. Need upper link mounts battery mount and shock hoops to finish it. Then it'll be grinding and smoothing before a nuke green metallic coating.http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/12/7uby6uma.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/12/azuty9ej.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/12/ezemequ4.jpg I'm in love with this little beast! |
Stealth bomber the Class 3 build Still trying to decide on a motor. Thinking a holmes 13.5 turn would work nicely. |

Stealth bomber the Class 3 build Worked on the bomber some more. Moved the skid plate aft on the chassis so the chassis would clear my front servo. I have to do the shock hoops still, a battery mount and some link mounts. All in all wrapping up quickly. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/14/zu8ypuba.jpg |
Finished up the lower link mounts, no pics but I should have this done by weeks end! Had a local guy quote me $80 to have it coated though! Wanted to primer it, base silver, metallic green, then clear it?! I know a scam when I hear one and this sounds like one. Any advice? |
Re: Stealth bomber the Class 3 build That actually sounds like a fair price if not a good deal. You figure just buying rattle can primer, base and clear of a good brand will coast about $45. But if this guy paints for a living he'll actually pop open a can of paint and have to thin it, filter it and shoot it and clean his gun for each coat and with all his time involved plus the wasted paint from doing a small tube chassis seems good to me. Or you can just rattle can it yourself and save a few bucks. |
I should have clarified its powder coating. Now doesn't it seem a bit fishy? |
Re: Stealth bomber the Class 3 build I haven't really kept up on powder coating coast but if you were to get your chassis in say black or red it would coast less since the material is more produced because is more used which makes the price Lower plus he could shoot the paint on your chassis and bake it with other parts at the same time which would bring the coast down as well. But with having a special paint like a green metallic makes for the paint to coast more and the fact he probably won't be painting anything else that color at the same time so he has prep work, material, labor, clean up and utility coast just for your chassis. I'd say if he is over charging it would only be by $10 at best but it might be a fair price. You got to remember people are in a business to make money, not brake even. Hopefully someone with more knowledge about powder coating coast can chime in and give you a better idea of proper pricing. |
Re: Stealth bomber the Class 3 build I didn't post up, but Nick is spot on. For a retail powdercoat job with an off track color (other than black or silver) the price is actually good. I have a connection, so mine is much better, but if I spent retail, I'd pay at least $100 and that's for black! Also, most shops don't paint paint little scalers, but the setup process is the same. Same loading the gun, same baking time, same oven. So charging you $80 when he's charging a Harley Chassis coat $400 is not a bad deal. My bet is that your quote is from a guy who is actually making money on the side and actually hooking you both up. Just something to consider. 8)Greg |
$400 for a 1:10 scale chassis? That guy must really hate Harlely. Or really love when he walks through the door..... I used to work at a manufacturing facility and we did machining and powder coating. I know the process. I've had a dozen or so things coated and this is a first with this particular guy. Anyway I'm just going to paint it myself as I don't see any point to paying almost $100 for something I'm going to remove with rocks. |
Re: Stealth bomber the Class 3 build Love the smooth flow of this chassis! Can't wait to get started on mine. As for Harley's chassis cost, the $400 I think refers to the cost of the chassis with powder coat, but I could be wrong ( I hope). There's a powder shop near me that will do a minimum batch for $50. |

Now that makes sense. This is probably one of my favorite chassis. It's southern but it doesn't a have 4lbs of tubing in it. Anyway I finished it up last night! Shock hoops were a bear but everything fits like it should and it looks completely badass! http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/21/7ypa5a5y.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/21/qebegapu.jpg |
And an update before work!! http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/21/4a5yduhu.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/21/merajysa.jpg Everything just barely fits! |

By 1mm or so. Haha. If it wasn't an 7980 it would have more clearance. |
