Project Independent Hummer!

Not sure where this should go, but its going to be running 2.2 tires so i guess ill put it here for now.

Ok well i wanted to try something a little different. After checking out a military Humvee and seeing the independent suspension i always wanted to try one on the trails.

Started out with a older nitro revo i found on ebay for about $40 shipped.
Not very pretty but it will do the job...

Then i found this nice unique large Hummer SUT body in the classified section. Ive never seen one like this before. Its BIG 13.5" wheelbase, has a drop bed with working tailgate, and all the lights have leds. The weird clear engine cowl will be done in black. Not sure on a body color yet, might stick with a red since the plastic underneath is red.

Re: Project Independent Hummer!

First thing is first, the revo is WAY too wide. I nabbed a set of slayer arms off good ol fleabay for about $10. This should narrow it down quite a bit!

I took it completely apart for some r&r, first the traxxas blue has to go.... primed and painted all the metal parts black.

Well you cant have a trail crawler with open diffs! So i took apart the diffs, cleaned them. Used some liquid steel epoxy to lock them up, then re-lubed and reassembled!

Re: Project Independent Hummer!

I was thinking of this too as I look at the military humvees. Lots of ground clearance with full independent suspension.

Traxxas make a spool to lock out the diffs.

I'll be following.

Right, they look pretty cool! Thanks for following!

Ah too late on the diffs, i did it the cheapo way...haha.

I forgot to mention this is an extreme budget build, i'm trying to stay under $200 total. So i might cheap out in a few areas....lol

After a little work with the dremel tool i had it in its new home.

Its getting closer to roller status!! I picked up a set of links from a slayer pro to go with the shorter arms for $10, 8 links for $10 is pretty cheap, way too cheap for me to pass up. Only problem is i cant remember where i put them....

Thank you, Its a fun project while the weather is cold. I like to tinker, and if it ends up being a flop ill replace the diffs and use it as a go fast basher "thumbsup"

Re: Project Independent Hummer!

Ok got it finished as a roller. I opted to shorten the revo axle shafts instead of buying the slayer ones for two reasons. 1.) its free 2.) they are a larger stronger shaft design. Some trimming with the dremel cut off made short work of them.

I also grabbed some slayer wheels and tires for $25 shipped with new hexs, pins, and nuts. I like the look of the tires, but they are pretty stiff and the compound is harder then i thought it would be. I am probably going to try and cut a set of normal crawler 2.2's to fit the 2.2/3 wheel.

Grabbed a HOBBYWING QUICRUN WP860 for the ESC. Its waterproof, runs two motors, lipo cutoff, and has a drag brake. Oh and it was only $32 shipped "thumbsup"

Made some more progress. Mounted some 2.2 treps to the traxxas wheels. The esc is wired up. Im waiting on a servo, and i need to mount the body.

Its looking good mocked up though.

I think you basically built a Summit. I swear, Traxxas is like the Taco Bell of RC.

Cool truck btw.

Thats a good idea! I was very lucky and the body fits the wheelbase perfect. one of the main reasons i chose this body. There are alot of lexan bodies that would fit. Or it would also be cool to stretch the frame to fit a 1/6th hardbody. No too many people build those, and there are some nice hardbodies out there.
