Default My Unimog U500 build-up....

Got this rig off ebay...

Compared to my 2.2 comp'er...

After running it around on my basement floor for about five minutes I started to smell the motor burning (good thing I didnt buy it to leave stock). So I tore it down to the bare chassis and look what just wanted to fit right in....

that is with zero modifications... The R2 fits in perfectly. Guess I will try and use the stock chassis for now.

My goal is to make it looks something like this (minus the box bed):

updates should be coming fairly quickly on this one....

These damn Uni's just keep popping up everywhere.

your gonna through tlt axles in there right, can't imagine those axles with a brushless (actually do it and record it for us)? I just wonder how long your gonna be happy with the stock chassis. I would think it would be better to just scrap it right away.

I like the way it looks, Can't wait to see it done.

Did you have to trim the shaft on your Hyperion to fit the R2? Just got my Z3013-16 today and noticed the shaft is a bit too long. Just curious on your experience with your Z3013-14.

What is the benefit to a aftermarket chassis? All i see is something to mount my tranny and electronics to, and a place to mount my links and shocks. What I am trying to ask is, what makes one chassis better than another in the world of scale (this is actually my first scale build). I was kickin around the idea of buying a Hi-Lift kit, using everything except the body- would this be a better route? why?

As for the bed snapping off, I am not using that bed at all, I will custom fab something a little more durable. The cab I am gonna prtoect with a exo-cage like in the 1:1 pictures above.

Depending on your frame there are several advantages. The Diaz chassis for example look very scale. Also depending on the stock chassis, link mounting and clearance can become a problem. A new chassis can also give you better strength and mounting options for your new bed and cab.

Maybe the stock chassis will work just fine for you. Whatever blows your skirt up.

I agree with all of that... but I will still try and use the stock chassis to start. If it starts to look like it will not work out for me, I will scrap it quickly. Doesnt cost anything to try it.

stay tuned.

quick update. got the cab painted and reassembled. few snaps.

before.

after.

I am going to go with the box bed... I have been kicking around ideas on how exactly to build it, suggestions might help.

As for the frame, I am planning on the diaz trail frame or high lift frame.

stay tuned

ditch the stock chassis and go with the HL frame and build a Exo cage and mod the rear part of the cage with a square box design and put some alum panels.so it looks good and it is actually useful and not a show piece

something I was thinking about here... would it be better/cheaper/faster to go ahead and get a high lift kit. adding up everything needed to complete this build is very close to, if not more than the kits are running now, and that is with a pede tranny... not a slick 3 speed.

Although it's been a few days, let me just say that you'd probably have to cut up the cab a bit to fit in the 3 speed.
