Default First Crawler! (Pics)

ive posted a few times on this forum before, so i figured id check in and post a couple pics of my own project. this is my first time building a ground up scale crawler. i assembled a tamiya txt-1 before, so that gave me a lil experence with 4 link suspensions and i took that knowledge and applied it to my custom one.

ill start with a lil background info on it. the truck started life as a pti goliath chassis, and slowly evolved into its current state. i lengthed the upper chassis rails to allow me to move the battery forward as well as better distribute the electronics on the chassis. it has a locked center diff (direct drive) and current is using a stock tamiya txt-1 motor.. but i need to change that out for something slower. for the 4 links, i used aluminum rod from home depot and cut it to length, fitting traxxas revo rod ends to finish them off. the axles are standard tlt-1 stuff with locked diffs and custom servo plates to allow me to mount the upper 4 links higher. its nothing fancy or ground breaking, but its simple and my first crawler. im sure ill make it better in the future as well as upgrade and push it to its limit. enough talk. pic time!

chassis: i used tape to hold the battery trays in place since i was in a hurry to test it out. it aslo lacked a rear driveshaft at this time. i was rushing to get it on the rocks for the first time, so its a bit rough in this shot

a quick paintjob and i got this:

then at the suggest of NickRummy, i lowered the body slightly to enhance the scale look a lil more, and it looks better now

and a couple more shots of it posing on the table on my porch

this forum has been a big help when it came to me building my crawler, and intend to improve it as time goes on. in the coming weeks i wanna add some scale bumpers and alter the rig with arrow shaft 4 links as well as rebuild the shock mounts in aluminuim for a more professional appearence. its been a fun build up over the last 9 months and im quite proud of it... even its simple

id suggest one thing that might help the steering fix the four link so the axles ar almost flat but keep the pinion at a slight angle up

i had problems with that the first time. the tranny on the goliath sits way up so the outputs are harder to reach. if i flatten out the pinion angle on the axles then it binds up the driveshafts, so i almost have to run it like that... atleast till i take it another step forward and make my own chassis sideplates and lower the transmission down a bit

Not a bad start at all I like the way geolanders look on under the Bronco lid. Once you get the trans lowered, and set the caster correctly on the front axle it should wheel alot better. What are the shock mounts made from? Plexi glass?

nah nice build so far. will be watching this one. chassis isnt that hard of a thing.just look around and see what you like and incorporate some of it into the build.

i crudely cut the shock mounts out of lexan since i have a bad history of cracking plexiglass everytime i touch it. its enough to keep the shocks up and give me a baseline for my suspension... afterwards i can make some nicer ones with a few adjustment holes.

i have an idea in my mind on what i wanna do with the chassis.... i just need to put some time into it and get the work done. the distant future has a bruiser style chassis and R2 tranny

If you still have some lexan left over (or even just rotate your current mounts 90*) I would recommend making some taller shock mounts. You have far more ground clearance than you need at the skip plate and if you can move the shock mounts up even just half an inch that will make a world of difference in how your rig not only handles but could give you the angle you need for the front drive shaft.
BTW, the orange is great!

Sounds like a plan to me My favorite chassis for any build really is a Bruiser chassis. Be sure to pick up a "chino" mount from RCPCrawlers.com

hey julie, its the dub9 guy from the myspace group

haha its looking real good
and also another way to get the cog down a little bit is run a 3.5 shock from the front of most stadium trucks most common stampede and rustler

Trim the body posts down, it will help in the scale apperance.

it definetly needs work. i estimate its only at 75% completion. i still need to buy the longer axle stubs since i only get 2 or 3 threads on the end of the axle if i wanna use those wheels. i aslo wanna swap out the threaded rod 4 links in favor of arrow rod shafts since they look cleaner. i aslo wanna lower my transmission and fine tune the driveshafts... since they wobble a lil. its a process and right now im just trying to get it on the rocks... then ill upgrade and get it to preform to its fullest. i aslo wanna give the body more scale details such as bumpers and a rollcage over the bed or possible a cap. overall the project isnt done yet, i just wanted to show the crawler community what a lil chick from CT can do when it comes to crawlers

i got the body posts from my hpi rs4 rally. they use the same posts for all their touring cars, so it shouldnt be too hard to track down a set

Julie,
Get some Tamiya TG-10 axles. RCP Crawlers carries them http://rcpcrawlers.com/tlt.html . They have a much longer threaded shaft area which should solve that issue

Could you measure how tall they are for me?

I like the build. Looks good overall.

Is that the Competition Orange from Pactra?

I am resurrecting my scale Bronco and was going to use orange this time.

Check out my old build in my sig...It's a topless Bronc!
