Joe's flatty The revival!

Well last weekend I was thinking about the comp we just had yesterday and was looking at my 2.2. I thought "boy is it boring, I need something different" I was also contemplating making another metal boddied truck similar to my 1.9 when i remembered that i had this large GI Joe MB Willies lying downstairs.

So I grabbed it and sat the body on my 2.2 chassis and wouldn't you know it the wheelbase was perfict! So the idea was hatched to replicate the flatty in aluminum.

First thing was to dissamble the car

http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154575.jpg

Then i had to seperate the hood and cowl.

I don't have any pics but next i simple molded the metal around the fenders and hood.

Then i copied the floor and inner fenders to paper and cut and bent flat pieces of aluminum for the floor.

I glued all the bits together and came up with this

whoa...

Metal Masher 08-27-2007 08:54 PM

The original grill was not to my liking

http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154577.jpg

So I sketched one onto card paper and cut the details out then clued the card paper to more pieces to give it some thickness. when i was done i had this

http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154531.jpg

After the body was finished I took my XRC chassis and fabbed a frame and removable cage to it

http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154470.jpg

With the body mounted it looked like this

Here is my driver Joe checking out his new rig

http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154490.jpg

Looks happy huh?

Metal Masher 08-27-2007 08:55 PM

After I got her all runnin and painted, I sent Joe out for some poser shots! (I wouldn't let him do too much, I didn't want to dent it up before the comp)

http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154494.jpg
http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154495.jpg

I ended up reducing the flex from the original set-up and I tell you what, I like it much better. It might not look as impressive but the rear is a whole ton less floppy

Looks Happy doesn't he! :D

http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154496.jpg

Dang it Joe What did I tell you about holding onto the roll bar!!!

http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154498.jpg

That's better.

All His shifters are within reach

http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154497.jpg

I even got all the electronics Tucked up under the hood

http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154499.jpg

Then it was off to the comp

grob23 08-27-2007 09:05 PM

sweet! It's nice to see something other than the run of the mill rigs... I really like that body! The roof line looked a little tall, but once the GI JOE got stuck in there it looks alot better

nice work!"thumbsup"

Amazing............I wish i had your skills

ROSS 08-27-2007 09:30 PM

looks great but man that thing is tall...

At the comp Joe didn't do to bad for his first time. The rain the night before and the humidity that morning made for slick conditions.

Here he is stuck before gate 2

I told him not to take it easy and i guess he listened:lol:

After the comp Joe wanted to play and since it was nicely broken in from the comp I figured what the heck. So I pulled the fenders back out and let him go

http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154579.jpg
http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154580.jpg

Boy his driving style is unforgiving!

http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154582.jpg
http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...076/154583.jpg

Eventually his cockyness got the better of him and he took a nasty tumble

He was ok and i managed to fix most of the damage so he'll be set for another day

And here is some close-ups of the carnage for you're viewing pleasure"thumbsup"

Well it depends. My 1.9 took about 15 hours this one was only 6 or 8.

Mongo 08-28-2007 08:03 AM

That's cool. It would be hard for me to bash a body like that when I had spent so much time on it, but the realistic body damage is awesome. Nice carnage!!

obijuan 08-28-2007 08:31 AM

what kind of metal did you use?

he uses disposable baking tins I believe. I would think some thin sheet metal would hold up a little better but still dent/scratch but not be sub-metal like the baking tin

It's not as easy to mold though.

sods 08-28-2007 11:53 AM

I'm not sure which was better......
seeing metalmasher inflict the carnage to the body,
or the evil laugh of joy that came out of him after he
bashed the body into the rocks.

bigmike07 08-28-2007 12:51 PM

WOW!! that was cool, love the damage!

nodnarb81 08-28-2007 03:31 PM

that is very cool! the 11th pic down in your 4th post looks like a rhino!"thumbsup"

Stormin2u 08-28-2007 03:58 PM

I'm kinda sad that was way sick when it was done. :-(

LEWIS 08-28-2007 07:42 PM
