Last week I picked up a ARTR Wheely King and I'm attempting to build a competent crawler/basher. My first mod was installing a RC4wd extended WB kit I bought in anticipation of getting a Wheely King. The only thing I really like about the kit is the upper link looks like a good place to mount my battery. After the extention I installed some AX10 Rock Lizards and beadlocks that I also bought before I got the actual truck. I'm waiting on my servo mounts and the rest of my electronics. Getting a 645MG, TQ3 (possible 4WS), 55 turn lathe motor. I still undecided on wich ESC to get, not gonna be a hardcore crawler so probably a Tazer or something. I also need to get a battery, I was thinking of a 2/3 6 cell from cheapbatteries to mount on the upper link. Gotta do some research on using 2/3 cells.

Some other mods I'm planning on doing soon are deleting the stock battery and servo trays and replacing them with some crossmembers. I'm also gonna try dovetailing the stock body. I'll take pictures so if it comes out nice I'll do a small write up.

Pics of the truck as it sits now will be up as soon as I download, I thought this site could host pics.

Like other's I've seen I'm gonna cut wedges out of the bed top so I can pull in the side. But I'm gonna leave some material on the sides to fasten the side to the bed with screws in addition to glue. Gonna make due with the stock body until the new Proline 72 C10 crawler body is available.

Kay small update, but no pics yet. While my daughter napped, I locked F/R axles with JB weld putty. I also removed the stock battery box and mounted my 2/3A 6 cell IB pack on the upper link.

My shipment at the LHS was short so all I got was my 645MG and the afore mentioned IB pack. I decided to spent the extra cash and ordered a Mamba Sidewinder. I'm also waiting on my 55T lathe motor, TQ3, and Gecko R/C servo mounts.

I still need to make steering links and rear lock outs. Hopefully I can get more done this weekend.

Looks killer, do you plan on running a stock chassis?

cutlaSS

I'm gonna use the stock chassis for now, I wanna get the truck up and running. Last year I sold a coworker a TLT that I was building into a comp rig. He didn't use the Jefferson chassis I give him so I'm getting that back and moddin that to use with the WK but I'll probably change to a Pede or AX10 trans.

I got around to dovetailing the bed and front end, things weren't working out as planned so I didn't both taking pics of progress. It'll work until my Proline body comes in. Now I just need to work on my steering and my truck will be running. I'm having difficulty finding all thread locally so I was wondering if anyone knows of a correct length tierod/link from a doner car that'll work on the WK.

I have the old kit, but if I did it again I'd either make my own links or go with the STRC kit. Both ways are cheaper and the STRC is comp legal length.

Last night I found some all thread so I made steering links but still want to sleeve them.

Finally got to ruun my WK today, and I'm pretty happy with it's performance. The only problems I noticed were the lower link mounts got hung up a few time and the chassis also hung up. For the mounts I'm just gonna turn them so I can mount the links and shock to the front of the axle and I gotta made some kind of skid plate for the chassis if I don't replace it all together.

I can also recommend the CC Sidewinder from personal experience. It performed smooth and trouble free. I just gotta get a Castle link to set the ESC more precisely.

Oh, no pics cause I was too busy having fun.

Are you planning to add the third channel switch to the TQ3 when you get it? If so do you plan on using the article in RCCA to go by for instuctions? I just want to give you heads up that the # in the Mag for the switch is wrong. Dont know off hand what the correct # is but when I did get the correct one from Radio shack I found out it was not a switch that returned to center on its own. So I did some research and found one at McMaster Carr. www.mcmaster.com (http://www.mcmaster.com) 7347K23 (http://www.mcmaster.com/itm/find.asp?searchstring=7347K23&sesnextrep=358687444302949&tab=find&FastTrack=False&WRCntxt=OrdHist)1 EachMiniature Toggle Switch, Dpdt, (on)-off-(on), 6 Amps At 125 Vac, Solder Lug

It works perfect. It cost $7.87. Just wanted to give you heads up. I like my 4WS but it sure does roll easy when you do it at full speed. Nice truck you have. Mine looks alot like it but no dovetailing and both servos are on the axles (homemade using templates from Jowetts) and I used the STRC kit after I made my own like HPI suggested and decided I did not like them. I also used Pro line bead locs and M3 Moabs. Have fun.

Worked on the suspension on my WK. Many of you know the RC4WD extended WB kit is too long to be comp legal but I found a fairly easy fix. I just swapped out the kit rod ends for Tmaxx ends, it's a direct swap. The only "hard" part is having to trim the upper link. The swap made my truck legal but then I decided I to clock the link/shock mounts so both could mount to the back of the axle this pushed me back over the comp limit but only by 1/4". But the truck seems to have benefited from this mod. The lower links are at a better angle and the ride height is lower but the truck seems to flex better. Hopefully I'll have a chance to test it out tomorrow.

Well, I ran the truck and found my mods to be big failures. The truck hung up on everything and the torque twist is even worse. On some steep grades the lower COG helped but the bad out weighed the good.

So my next round of mod include converting the rear to 4 link but leave the front as 3 link. I'm gonna raise the upper link mounts on the rear axle alittle higher so hopefully the IC will move more to the rear. Mount the shock more vertical and raise ride height alittle. Find out why my shocks are leaking and refill them with 30WT. Hopefully these mods will work beter than the first round of mods.

Nice options so far, I suggest you change out the stock chassis though. Used ones are very avaliable around here, I got a used Thunderhorse for 10 bucks.

That's just the pic from Proline, I thought the body looked good so I was planning on ordering it. I decided to get the normal C10, when it gets here I plan on dovetailing it like I did to the stock WK body.

Crawlerguy851, I know the stock chassis is the WK biggest draw back. I plan on getting aftermarket chassis or make my own soon.

Picked up a gopher chassis from kawika, a HRCC member. I heard other competitors called it the "shopping cart", so I guess I can call this truck the Grocery Getter. I made new lower links from 6-32 allthread and sleeved them with aluminum tubing. Also made new upper links from 4-40 and sleeved them with tubing but the links look a little flimsy so I'm just gonna sleeve the original tubing. I also decided to use a AX10 trans. Also went to a droop setup with TCS internal springs. When I get the truck out on some test runs I can fine tune the suspension. Got everything finished last night but no new pics, just a couple from when the truck was a roller. I still have to make new panels. Oh, and thanks to Offroader5 for decribing how to make AX10 to WK shafts.

I got a aluminum straight axle adapters off ebay. I like these because they are round as opposed to other straight axle conv. on the market. These are really nice pieces and should help with hang ups I usually get with the stock C's. They're also machined very precisely, the bearings have to be straight to install them.

Thanks guys. I already have about $600 in my truck and I don't see an end to my project any time soon. I'm thinking of ditching the Gopher and going back to a more traditional twin vertical plates. I also want to narrow my track width but all the neg. offset beadlocks alailable rigth now are aluminum and go for $100+. I'm almost tempted to get a AX10 Scorpion like the rest of my friends.
