Well after seeing all the awesome tube chassis's out there I decided to build my own! I was really inspired by Bluetorch Fabworks fusion chassis, so I emailed Dan and asked permission to build a replica. I was also inspired by Badhoopty's Rockcock Hulkwerks chassis. After that I got to work. It is built out of 3/16's solid rod. This isn't a comp. rig so weight isn't an issue. What it is, is a full on abuse vehicle so strength is key. I want to use this as a tool to get some of my friends into crawling so I'm going to beat the hell out of it once its done.
Please give me some feedback sorry the pics aren't the greatest. This will probably be a slow build cause I work insane hours so time is hard to come by. LOL

killer work Mikey007!!! on my next chassis i will try to make it a tuber. yours has given me too much insperation to make one.
sorry for the off topic question, but how much would a rig like the one bluetorch posted cost? like 30 -40 grand?
Mikey007
07-30-2005, 09:47 AM
Thank-you so much for replying Dan I really appreciate hearing good things from the creator of such a beautiful machine. I wish I could build these is real life like you do but don't have the skill or knowledge!
Yoda thanx for your reply. I hope to see more replica's in the future, just don't forget to ask permission before you build it and always give credit to the original builder. As for how much a rig like Dans would cost, you can go to his webpage and look around, you will find prices as well as Dan's forum where you can ask questions and read up on all his creations! Link: http://www.bluetorchfab.com/
Thanx again and I will try to get another update soon. Have been real busy lately so time for the project is hard to come by!

Well got some more done. Mainly focused on the bigger pieces so its starting to look like a crawler. I will have to do all the little detail pieces yet but pretty much all the big ones are done! Am waiting for the tlt axles to show up before I make the link mounts and shock mounts. I will also be making a motor plate under the hood where the electric motor will be mounted! This will be hidden inside a scale 350 engine. Heres the new pics!!

Maaaaaaaaaan Mike you are going to town on that thing! I probably have said this before about your tube work and others. However I shall say it again. It is stuff like that which I am truly envious. if you could rip them out you wold make a killing.. but with the amount time and work, it would be really hard to make a profit.... of coarse if you ever dicide to sell it... it would be a bidding war.... put it on ebay and watch the dogs fight.... again.. well done.
Mikey007
08-18-2005, 02:18 PM
wow Thanx alot for all the kind words! I use a regular bender like on Roktoys site! I wish I could make everyone a frame but it takes way too long for me to make them. I also want to test this one out and make sure all my brazing holds. I was thinking of the whole ebay deal, LOL but really have my heart into this one. I have wanted a tube frame since I remember Doc Wildman and Dave Pack building replica tubers on RCMT and now I finally have one. Although there is still plenty to do, I have the axles now and am in the middle of building them. I will get started after this weekend. I'm going to raise some hell in Wisconsin at a friends wedding!
Thanx alot once again keep checking back for an update!!!

If she wants to spend time with you, tell her to learn how to bend and braze! My g/f gave me that crap, I got a brainstorm and let her drive my Rustler. She loved it until the rooster caught on fire. Now we are spending time together and she has the Rusty and a TLT in the works.

Any tips on how to make your brazed joints turn out so nice?
Mine could use a little help.
I've found that you must have a clean surface first off. I have been using acetone to clean the steel right before I Braze the joint. If you use too much heat you'll also burn off the flux and it will turn black and not leave you with a very nice joint. Practice, Practice, Practice! I'm still figuring things out myself.
Some new pics here as well, I put the shock mounts on finally so here it is with the front pretty close to being done. I just have to mount the R2 under the hood and, then I will go to the back.

Thanx alot everyone for the nice comments!! I'm not too sure how much time I have in it! It is alot though as I'm a fussy person when it comes to smaller details!
The front end is pretty much complete. I installed the R2 and outrunner and got all the driveshafts and links made, just have to finish up somesmall braces and a winch plate. I've started to work on the back now, and have shock hoops, one cross brace, and tabs for the shock mounts then it will be very close to being driveable.

I dont know if you could make this work, but what if instead of mounting the servo on the axles, you could make it a bit more scale and do a steering steup similar to an HPI Wheely King. It mounts the servo up on the chassis, out of site, and then runs links down to L shaped servo horns the can turn, and hook that up to the TLT steering links. That would be pretty cool, eh? It would look at little bit more scale. ;-)

I will post pics once that is done. I then have some scale touches like gussets and a dash to add a little later. Hope to get some time to work on it this week!!
As for the steering, I want to keep that aspect of the build simple and reliable as I will be putting 4 wheel steering in this rig.
Electronics are: Mamba Max, Hyperion z3025, and probably 2 JR servos, controller is a JR R1

Well they aren't anything too extravagant. I just took the plastic caps off the top of spray bottles, ex. hairspray, leather cleaner. Then I cut them down to the diameter I needed, drilled holes for led holders and painted the bucket with chrome and flat black. They are secured with household goop.

Yeah I was just fooling around, to see if it would look the part. What do you think?? That took me 30 seconds. If I do go with it, I'm going to make a stencil.

I do like the bolt on panels, but a hidden system would look a lot cleaner imo. I just did 3mm nuts on my chassis and bolted all of the panels on with 3mm button heads. The 3mm stuff is a little big though, maybe some 2mm nuts and bolts might look better."thumbsup"

How did you bend the front grill tube like that?
I bent the bigger round bends with a brakeline tubing bender, and the smaller radius bends by hand with a pair of vice grips. I also built a bending jig for different radii (sp) out of square tubing and various sizes of bolts.

It is paint. I used an airbrush to spray the base color which is silver, as well as the green top coat. I then used an automotive type clear.
I would have had it powder coated, but had a bad feeling that this thing would go missing or something bad would happen to it. Just couldn't take a chance after all the hours into it.

any updates on this thing?
I think its funny how a rig built 4 years ago, is BETTER than the rigs built 4 years later. Shows how good the community had it 4 years ago. Also, one of the oldest rigs, is one of the best on the site! Nice job buddy "thumbsup"

Hey guys sorry for no updates as of late. I have started my own trucking business, been working on my 67 Camaro and dealing with all my anxiety issues.
As the rig sits now it is all wired, axles and tires under it links finished, basically just have to paint some panels to finish, and lots of detail work.
I really appreciate all the kind words, I really tried my hardest on this build.

Well its come along way, from a bunch of straight steel. I still have alot to do to it but at least its driveable. Still have some new plans for it but like always not enough time. As the scale accesories get better I have been wanting to change to a frame mounted servo, with some blackwell axles, a planetary transmission surrounded by a small block chevy and a killer transfer case. Thanx alot to all who have been watching and for the nice compliments.

Thanx for the awesome feedback guys I appreciate it!
The color is key-lime green with a silver base, by fascolor. I finished with tamiya clear coat.
I have a bunch of panels painted, the front headlights are all wired, I plan on wiring the taillights soon, so I should have some pics coming next week.

Thank you! I really enjoy the color, it screams attention.
I do need to change to a 1:1 transfer case though as my wheel speed sucks for anything but low speed technical crawling.
