how many people run cut and shut clod tires

I'd say 95% of people with a clod run clod tires. We don't have many options and generally they do ok. I run cut tires on narrowed rims w/ extra backspacing..

I'm just having trouble picturing how you shut a tire, do you mean narrowing the tires? Or glueing them to the rims?

Cut tire down middle, cut away a section of tire, discard that cut section and then reattach the two halves to make a narrower tire.

See, stock Kong tire(4.5" wide) next to a cut'n'shut Kong tire(3" wide)....

OK, I've just never referred to it as 'cut n shut'

I thought about it for the clod tires, buuuut... If you took like an 1.5" out of em it'd be cool, but you'd have trouble getting a rim to the right width, I'd imagine.

well not to pirate the post but do you run foams in the narrowed kongs? and alos can a stock maxx rim fit the kongs cause that would make them bulge over slightly or am i wrong?

Okay i was wondering why does everyone make there tires narower. Don't Wider tires give you better traction.

techincally no more pounds per square inch a 2 inch tire with a 16 pound truck that means 4 pounds per tire now a truck with 4 inch tire thats only 2 pounds definetly dont quote me on the numbers im not sure how that works but i know why it does what it does but this all goes away in sand or super loose dirt cause you wantt he weight distributed cause then it wont sink in hope that helped

Currently no foams. I do need to add a bit of foams for more sidewall strength, they want to fold over at times and a bit of foam would help ease that.

I have no idea how big a stock Maxx wheel is. These are just the wheels that came in the Kong tire combo.... I narrowed the wheels down to about 1.5" wide though. There is some bulge from the tires but not much, about .75" per side. It's quite easy to narrow the rims if needed. I still need to soften up the Kongs and groove them for added flex. The tread blocks are kinda stiff in stock form.

narrow tire=more pounds per sq inch. Too wide and you just float, too narrow and you just sink in. On rock you'd think that narrow is always good, but its not the case cause you fall in holes.

I think most will agree.. clod tires are a bit too wide :lol: I think having a 3" wide clod tire would be cool, but they're not that special of tires anyway, so why put the time into them?

You'd think that would make sense, but in crawling and in off road it doesn't.

I have only ever ''cut and shut'' narrowed any of my tyres for the pure purpose of gaining more steering and manauvrability .
Wider tyres do have a larger contact patch and also have more chance of gaining a foothold on any little steps or crevises but are wide ,clumsy,the steering suffers from wide tyres and have more of a chance to get you stuck in pinches or wedges.

Wider doesn't always mean better. :) If you were mudrunning (for example) you would want a taller skinny tire over a large balloon tire so that your tire would more or less sink to the bottom to get traction on (solid) ground. The wider tires might cover more area, but they aren't grabbing anything but slippery mud. Fine if you try to "float" over the mud with speed, but not good for creeping through.

In crawling both variations might prove to have the advantage. It depends on many factors including terrain, tires, driving ability, plus many more.

But, everyone has there own opinions.

moabs work great stock just narrow the rim about an inch.
