Finally getting around to building a Berg axle'd rig. I think I have all my ideas in line so time to start building!
FYI if you order the axle kit you wont recieve any of the servo mounts. No big deal for me I will fab something up and I am sure others will be doing the same "thumbsup"
Parts list so far:
Berg axles
2 55t lathes
mamba max
hitec 5998
castle bec
losi shocks
Mayhem Berg offset wheels
Chassis is still in the early stages of planning. I have a set of blackjack plates that will work great for now. Thanks Franky Rizzo!
My mess from tonight

Finally got to sit down and work on this last night. Almost a roller, still need to figure out steering but I have an idea
Started by trying a chassis design I have always wanted to do on a 2.2 but it wasn't working out so well so I followed Jason's idea and used the stock AX-10 chassis. I knew there was a good use for it! Didn't need any pics of Jason's setup, this was too easy! Made my own skid and got the losi shocks mounted.
This will be my first comp rig using shocks this long and this much ground clearance. Its going to take some getting used to.

I think I am going to leave the front. Having all that weight that much lower is a huge stability advantage. Not only that, unclocked it still has more clearance than my tlt axles.
If it becomes a problem I will probably clock the front 15*

What can I say I'm just a helpful guy
For a servo mount, I made a U bolt out of 6-32 all thread and ran it through the bottom of a piece of aluminum angle with the servo shape cut out of the vertical face. Then used the hole in the top of the axle link mount to keep it from moving side to side. I haven't had any issues with it yet.
Pictures explain it better...

Did you figure out why your axles are so loud? Mine SCREAM at low rpm :lol:

pinion gear mesh will cause a lot of noise , when i had the motor mounted behind the axle during a steep climb i slid back down rather hard hitting the motor and it shoved the pinion into the gear causing all sorts of loudness .
i found that playing with gear mesh really changes the harmonics and tone the crawler makes

What gear pinions are you running? I agree about the mesh though, I think with metal gears the spacing can be larger (which should make them quieter).

running the kit supplied pinions i think they are 12 13 or 14 tooth lol not sure but they were the only set of matching pinions i had before the comp and didn't have a lhs near .
actually whatever pinions are in the kit work well with the 45t motors

Standard 48p. Im running 12 tooth pinions now, might switch to 14's and see if the noise is reduced.

The blackjack will probably end up on there. I am trying longer shocks for a change and want to see if I like it. I'm so used to the short shocks on my tlt BJ that I doubt I will

If I remember correctly from my racing days gone by that the convulation (sp) of 48pitch pinions changes below 14 teeth especially with cheaper brand pinions
eg: the gap between the teeth move further away from each other thus changing the pitch slightly and therefore may be causing the noises your experiencing
The only pinions I would recommend and use are rw racing there made in england but are very very nice

I love them too now! With the slightly noticable clod stall its freakin awesome.
I was running right behind Austin on most of the courses since I was lucky enough to end up in his group. When I was talking to him he told me exactly what to expect on a steep vertical climb. To be honest I have never driven a rig with axle stall before and that climb was the first time I have ever experainced it, way to break myself in huh? :ror:

No sweat, wasn't bugged at all. That was my last course and only had like 10 seconds left on the clock, I was just happy I didn't break again. Basically I tried running 3 of those courses in 4 minutes ..
Besides, you came in 6th, i came in 26th, you can bug/school me all day long about what line to take :lol:.. Oh and thanks for letting me run the Slash, to cool!!

Having never experienced clod stall (I have a shafty) and probably getting a Berg, what should I expect? What did Austin tell you?
Not much to expect, they act almost as a shafty but on steep climbs the rear will sometimes want to run slightly slower and stall if you dont have enough low end power. Austin just told me to stay on the throttle enough to keep the rear creeping, sure enough it was super smooth and walked the bonus. I think most made it as well but man this rig made it easy!

Here are a few pics the night before I left for WCCC. Wheels were not quite ready and I just finished the body and battery placement.
You can also see the steering... Alittle bit :ror:
I went with a maxamps 860mah 11.1v pack that I got in a trade. Figured it was perfect for these axles due to the limited room. Also kept that little bit of weight even lower.
Because I was running these packs on a dual motor rig I was a little concerned about hurting them. Picked up a voltage reader to check them throughout the day. I was surprised, I was able to run 2 courses and not one cell was under 3.85 volts! After the third course they read 3.67 and decided to switch to the second pack for the remainder of the day. Never hit the lipo cutoff set at 9 volts either.

Thats exactly what it is. I would move the drag link but when steering the tie rod moves forward and actually contacts the servo horn (just barely). So there isn't any room for the drag link.

Nope, its a few thousandths too wide so the knuckle presses up against the tube pretty well. Just enough to clamp everything tight.

Its only held down with one screw. The screw closest to the gear box keeps the plate from moving ;-)

I notice you've gone with comp wheels on the front and delrins on the rear, so i take it you are looking for a really front heavy rig?

No need to be confused. What you want to do is achieve a slightly forward weight bias. Meaning if you pick your rig up from the center it will want to lean forward, therefore if you pick it up slightly in front of center the truck will balance. All that equals a forward weight bias. No need to over analyze weighted wheels or which wheels to run ;-) Just concentrate on the overall weight of the rig and its balance.
Regarding the wheels, I am actually running the same aluminum wheels front and rear, just different rings.
it will never work:flipoff:. ya you know it looks good, now we just need to get that thing on the rocks"thumbsup". let me know im ready when you are...

Havent updated this in a LONG time! I finally finished off the Axial body, the front tore since I didnt leave much material when I cut it.
Time to represent Team RCC with a clean paint scheme! I tried something different this time and went really light on the colors. I also didnt back the chrome paint. Gives off a cool effect, its transparent but still mirror like :ror:
Also been running a few sets of Pro-Line G8 Hammers and the Epic-Locs in the back. I probably have 10+ battery packs through this set of tires and they have hardly worn... Yes they get more forward bite on my local rocks than the claws. Its insane! Cant wait to see how they do at this weekends Nor-Cal comp on some high traction rock.

The longer that drag link is the more effective it is at using the servos power. It just keeps everything closer to parallel throughout its cycle. Other than that there is no real reason.
