How good would 5.4" rods be as you can pick some up for the savage for $10

so that $40 for 8 links

they are 5.4" long
and 5mm wide :| - not sure on how strong they would be

I bought 4, 4 ft. sections of 6-32 all-thread, cost $10. (Home depot)
then 3, 5 ft sections of 1/4 brake tubing, cost $10. (NAPA)
2 bags of traxxas Rod ends, cost $13 (Tower, not inc shipping cause I got more than that only)

Drilled the ends out w/ 1/8" drill bit, then tapped w/ 6-32 tap.

Total cost for more than enough links - $33

Mine are between 6" and 9" long depending on location.
