hi folks,

I wanted to start one of those 'long buildup threads,' so here goes.

Start:

http://orcrc.com/outings/jeeporig.jpg

Found it for $4 at a flea market...

http://orcrc.com/outings/jeeppaint1.jpg

Took it all apart and painted it "Georgia Clay". "Saddle Tan" accents will come later.

http://orcrc.com/outings/jeepcans.jpg

Cans get the correct color!

More to come! :)

(It'll be a Clod)

Crap, Ryan...you shoulda sent it here.

I could give it a real "Georgia Clay" coloring!

I love these long *** buildup threads. :)
And I love that Ford GPW body. I think they look great on Clod axles.

HOLY COW!

I didn't know that those had that much detail in it! Very nice start, and I love those slat-grills.

I'd like to find a decent CJ2A somewhere between a 1/10 and 1/18 to build up resembling my 1:1.

-WRM

BTW, are 'ya putting anything in the pedestal mount? I bought one of those mini guns at WMart the other day, thinking about mounting it in the bed of a hard clod body.

More updates:

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep4.jpg

Added the black pinstriping.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep3.jpg

Mocked up most of the cage. I still need to add the little reinforcement pieces.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep5.jpg

The Jerry can and Spare. The spare will be a narrowed masher on the final truck, it it'll ride on Moab 2.2's.

Thanks!
Ryan

He can use rear Stampede wheels and it'll only be 12.5" wide. Cut the outer lip off the wheel and get the width down to 12". Should work good, if that body is like the one Wal-Mart had a couple years ago then it's big.

ohhh... okay..... only 12 inches wide. i hope the body is that wide. if my rig were that wide i wouldn't be able to go anywhere. it would always be rubbing.

I asked Ryan about the body and he said this:

Wheelbase will be around 12.5-13". Body is 8.5" wide in front, 9" wide in rear!

Harris

If the above is true, then i dont know how scale it could look. if i remember correctly jeeps like that had narrow tires what were right underneath the wheelwells.

That'll be perfect, IMO. He'll have ~1.5" of tire sticking out past the body. It'll look like a 2A on full width axles. ;)

It'll look more scale than this......

Hi folks,

Yup, there will be some 'stick out', but that's unavoidable, and it's the compromise I'm making running clod axles so I dont have to hack up the body to fit a tranny/transfer case/driveshafts. Plus I've already done the whole TLT axled thing for now, and havent built a clod yet!

My main goal is to keep the body LOW. I dont like the way jacked up 1/6th scale jeeps look over axles when they are too high.

I've installed hood hinges. Pics to come!

Update 11.03.05

Got the axles together and picked up the lathe motors:

http://orcrc.com/outings/PDRM3979.JPG

Added hinges to the hood so I can get to the suspension more easily.

http://orcrc.com/outings/PDRM4034.jpg

Finished welding the cage and painted it black.

http://orcrc.com/outings/PDRM4035.jpg

Cage attached to the body:

http://orcrc.com/outings/PDRM4037.jpg

http://orcrc.com/outings/PDRM4039.jpg

Next is to find 2 more of the correct offset stampede wheels and get the axles positioned. Then I'll start hacking the body, and build a frame. My goal is to keep the axles as close to the body as possible... I'll happily sacrifice articulation for scale looks on this project.

Thanks for looking,
Ryan

Update time! 12/18/05

After looking at the Jeep mocked up, I felt that the 2.2 Moabs were just a hair too small. I switched to narrowed Imex All-T's, and in my opinion they are the perfect scale for the big jeep body!

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep6.JPG

I hacked out the front of the underpan to give clearance to the Clod axle.

2/1/06 Update Time!

I made a good chunk of progress. The truck is all apart now going through final painting stages and suspension tweaks.

You can view the whole buildup here:

http://www.orcrc.com/6thjeep.htm

Here are the pics!

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep16.jpg
Planning the rear axle clearance.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep17.jpg
The rear cut, and the axle spaced beneath it.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep12.jpg
Here you can see the sub-frame all welded up, and the rest of the underside of the body cut and smoothed.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep13.jpg
The links attached to the subframe and the body.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep14.jpg
To make the wheelbase realistic and to keep good approach and departure angles, I had to stretch the front and rear ends. This neccesitated cutting the rear wheel arches.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep15.jpg
Rear suspension from the top.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep18.jpg
Here you can see the lower links of the front and rear ends secured to the chassis braces.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep19.jpg
I welded on support tabs to hold down the horizontal bumper/servo mount Kydex sections.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep20.jpg
The kydex sections attached, sandwitching the steel.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep21.jpg
Painted front section.

More to come! Almost done!

Here you can see how the real servo winch is lined up with the Warn lexan winch. I'll build a real fairled to replace the lexan one once I get everything hooked up.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep30.jpg
Headlights, interior lights and tail lights are installed.

http://www.orcrc.com/outings/jeep31.jpg
Battery pack and temporary spot for the yellow lights. I might end up making them rock lights instead of interior lights.
