Big thanks to Axial for making another stellar product! The SCX-10 went together extremely fast and just like the AX-10 it was a breeze to put together. And thanks to Chino63 for helping me out with the build. 8)

Pulled everything out of the box and got ready to build.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/002.jpg

Grabbed my Axial tool kit and the manual and got started.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/003.jpg

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/004.jpg

I always start my builds by putting the tires and rims together. I just love offroad tires 8). The tires were very easy to mount to the stock beadlocks.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/007.jpg

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/008.jpg

When I working with the second bead and mounting the second beadlock ring, I place the rim/tire on another bare wheel so I can firmly push the tire bead into the wheel then place the beadlock ring down on the tire and start adding the beadlock screws.

On to the axles, nothing new here, same quality axles from the AX-10, only these come with the nice metal lockers. Full bearings included.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/012.jpg

The drive shafts come with metal yokes standard.

Complete Axles

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/015.jpg

The Transmission is also the same quality tranny from the AX-10, with full bearings as well.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/018.jpg

I mounted a 35T Lathe motor with the stock pinion. Used some paper to set the gear mesh just right.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/019.jpg

The kit comes with steel frame rails that taper out in the middle to increase articulation and add to the superb out of the box performance of this rig.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/020.jpg

Here are the axles with the links and shocks mounted.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/021.jpg

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/022.jpg

The shock towers have three different mounting positions and incorporate a trick body post system.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/023.jpg

The contoured skid plate is another one of the SCX-10's great additions.

For electronics I installed a Mamba Max with a 35T Lathe motor and a spectrum receiver. The final install with have a Novak Goat Crawler system, but I wanted to show this config as well.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/034.jpg

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/035.jpg

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/036.jpg

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/037.jpg

I did not want to mount the battery in the stock location on the back of the frame and thought the optional mounting position on the front of the frame was to high with the spacers the manual suggested to install.

So I cut approx. 10mm off of the battery tray spacers to lower it down so the tray sits on top of the battery box and I did not use the spacer for the front mount. This makes the steering servo bottom out on the battery tray when you cycle the entire front suspension straight down. I'm not worried about that because I don't plan on jumping this rig all that much and even with the battery tray lowered 10mm's in the back and even more in the front, the suspension can articulate completely on either side and the servo never hits the battery tray. This should help lower the COG a little.

Here is the two rear spacers not cut down.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/038.jpg

You can see in this pic the spacer on the left is cut down on the spacer on the right is stock.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/031.jpg

And here is both rear spacers cut down.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/039.jpg

With the battery tray installed.

And finally the complete build with the stock body panted a gun metal gray.

My next addition will be the Novak Goat Crawler system and a Proline CGR with cage.

I can't wait to get this rig out on the trail ASAP!

Great build Badger, I really enjoyed the build up of mine, these are great kits to assemble.

The only real shortcoming on yours is the use of an Integy product, really drags down a otherwise great kit.

The only real shortcoming on yours is the use of an Integy product, really drags down a otherwise great kit.

In the crawler world Integy lathe motors have been a staple since the beginning. That changed when Dr. Holmes brought us great hand wound motors and got us hooked on brushless power for our crawlers.

Depending on how the Novak goat system performs and how much run time I get with it will determine if I put this mamba/lathe setup back in. With the current setup running a standard stick pack I know I can ballon the mamba max to make it waterproof and spend all day out at the Bean with a couple packs in my back pocket.

Looks good John, the pics are awesome!!

Thanks. I'm no photographer, but I wanted to take some of the shots with a greater depth of field so not just one corner of the chassis or rig is in focus. I really like how some of them turned out. I love looking at the killer tread of the Flat Irons in both the front and rear of the rig. "thumbsup"

I ordered my Novak Goat Crawler system from TCSCrawlers (http://www.tcscrawlers.com) and as always it came in extremely fast. Where not supposed to talk prices in a tech thread but I have to ask if anyone knows if Kevin is going crazy or not? His prices are ridiculously low, I paid $169.99 for the Novak Goat Crawler System (http://www.tcscrawlers.com/On-Sale-30-off-Novak-Goat-Crawler-System-3019-p-16479.html). I couldn't find anyone that sells them for that cheap, let alone a RCC vendor. Thanks for doing what you do Kevin!

OK, on to the Goat system, the installation was a breeze but as you can see from the pics, the stock location of the ESC with the Goat Crawler motor installed has little wiggle room. Fortunately with this setup, it barely gets warm at all after an hour of solid crawling so I am not worried about the ESC or motor overheating each other.

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/051.jpg

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/052.jpg

http://www.rccrawler.com/articles/axial_scx10/053.jpg

With this setup, the rig could climb an eight foot, 45 degree incline at Hobby Town Concord's indoor course. It blew me away on how capable this rig is out of the box. The stock Proline 1.9 Flat Iron's provide just enough traction and great looks to make this a true scale crawler.

Here's the 45 degree incline.

The climb is all the way on the left of this picture.

Mine did too for months. Then I made the mistake of adding a dig servo the other day because of the crazy notion to have a rear 2WD option on my SCX10,no smoke but one loud crack noise. Bye bye Goat, it was nice knowing you.

Thanks. I got my new Proline CGR body in today so I am going to start painting that tonight.

This battery location is about as best you can get on the chassis IMO. This thing climbs so well.

Shut your pie hole and get to painting! :lmao:

:lmao: That was great.

But I can't decide on what paint scheme to go with, I had a old 1:1 Scout and it was silver so I've been thinking about going with the simple silver (body) and black (interior) theme but I was thinking about doing a flat tan for the body and flat black on the interior.

Everyone needs to open their pie holes and help a fragile, timid old man decide while I mask the interior off.

No the flat paint is not lexan paint it's camouflage paint for plastics, so Chino63 suggested that I put a base coat of silver lexan paint to adhere to the body, then paint the flat plastic paint which is supposed to adhere to the base coat of paint. I believe him because he has beat is Slash body up racing with me several times and the paint is holding up great on it.

I got some more work done on my Proline CGR body today. I remembered how much I hate masking bodies.

I masked off the two diamond plate boxes behind the seats, the center shift console and the VDO gages on the dash as well as the entire body area that will be painted flat tan later.

would using a matte clear coat for a lil protection be advised?

I like it but then again I've been eating so much oatmeal lately I shitted a pile of dust this morning...

No unfortunately I don't have my own shop and I am going from garage, to living room (pictures) and then to my office to do all the work, would be a pain in the ass to lug a cam everywhere.

Come on, it's called a helmet cam. :)

It's Krylon Camouflage Ultra-Flat paint. I don't think it will need a clear coat, besides I like the ultra flat look.

Military style markings with Axial stickers is the best I could do.

There's no way in hell I'm sticking a camera down my pants.

It was actually done in photoshop. I had no idea the body turned out so dead sexy until I looked at the photos of it last night. With the amount of kids that will be looking at this build thread I decided to photoshop them to prevent kids from falling in love with this rig. It's really just better for the community.

I made the bumper mounts out of flat aluminum stock, the front is about twice as thick as the rear to space the bumpers out from the body, nothing fancy on the mounts. After I finished with the bumper mounts, I mounted the rip off artists winch that will be replaced by a ScaleOffroad winch as soon as I get one. The winch will be wired directly to the winch port on the Novak Goat ESC.

I'm not going to install the light bar on the roof rack, this rig will be beat on and will be rolled over and over and over again, a light bar would not survive. I do plan on adding head & tail lights, lights in the front bumper and some rock lights.

I was going to ask about the rock sliders too. Also, do you have any rubbing issues with the front bumper like Brandon did? I do know he hacked off a bit of his front frame, perhaps that is why? Looks great Badger, help me find someone who wants to by my brushless, upgraded Slash so I can get a SCX-10!

Gorgeous work! very clean, and awesome pictures! Definitely one of the nicest SCX-10's I've seen. I would suggest some rock sliders as well. I think that would really set off the truck. Also, the springs are powder coated or something similar, and the springs are dye-able, maybe dye the springs white, that would really make them stand out. "thumbsup"

Badger,

I love those bumper mounts. If I didn't know I would take a finger off trying, I would make brackets like that for mine. Could you mount the bumpers directly to the frame end pieces without the plate? or are there no holes that would line up?

Sick scaler! "thumbsup"

This thread makes me want to ditch the comp 2.2 project for a sx-10. *groans*
Thanks. Get a SCX-10, you won't be disappointed, and if you are, I'll buy you a body of your liking from Proline.

I didn't, but now I do. I will order a set tomorrow and get some pics of them mounted. Thanks.

I mounted my body as centered as possible on the chassis so both the front and back of the body meet up with the ends of the frame. This forced me to trim more of the rear fenders off but the body slides in perfect right behind the bumpers. Keep in mind though, I used different thickness of aluminum for the front and rear bumper mounts to get the clearance I needed.

I don't need another Slash, I already have three (one working). :ror:

The spacing of the holes in the Western bumpers are off just enough on both the front and rear not allowing you to directly bolt the bumper to the frame end cross members. Even if I could have done that though, I would still need to space them out from the frame a little to clear the body.

I guess I will need to start making offerings to my tool gods so that when I get around to making some brackets 1) my fingers survive intact and 2) the don't look like complete and utter crap. Practice is cheap, disfigurement is forever."thumbsup"

Hey Badger, thanks for the winch on Sunday. Too bad my Jeep is a tank...guess I owe you a new winch hook. You and Ted were really blazing trails, even the 2.2s were having trouble keeping up.

I can't believe how well that paint held up! What was the brand name again? (you guys should have seen it. the second Badger set his rig down, we all took turns ramming into him! :lmao:)
