x axles vs twin force

Which would be better for a 1/6 scale crawler? Is one stronger than the other, or are they 'bout the same?

I've never run X-factor axles but I know they are strong enough for Kongs and a great deal of abuse,so yeah they'd work. I myself run Twin axles with upgraded helical cut steel ring and pinions. I've been locked solid and spinning Kongs since they came out of the box and have yet to brake anything. I'd vote for Twin axles but I'm a bit biased. Honestly,either one will work,which ever one is easier to get and cheaper for ya would be my deciding factor.

stronger: ive ran both, XF axles have a burly steel ring/pinion right out of the box TF's dont but kyosho does make some...more $. TF,s have dogbones in the axles, XF's have nice shafts that clamp onto the diff outputs.

XF's better in my opinion. and cheaper in the long run ;-)

Well,I understand your points and can see where you feel X axles are better. I still feel Twin axles are better. I'm not trying to argue with you or prove you wrong,I've got my opinion and you've got yours and it's all cool :mrgreen:

That would just depend on what kind of deals a guy can find. My helical cut gears were just $20 a set and I made my axles wider for $0.

The helical cut gears ARE stronger than the straight cut gears,hands down. How many vehicles do you know that run a staight cut ring and pinion? Helical cut gears are more efficient,quieter,and stronger because they have a better gear mesh with alot more contact patch.

i've had to open up my xf axles twice now to tighten up those shaft collars, i would take a zero-maintenence dog bone over them ANY day. the next time they loosen up i'll just have the darn things welded together...

with the kyosho axles you can use 1/8 buggy diffs in them right? and you have the option of narrowing the axle, and imo they just look a heck of alot cleaner.

i like the xfactor axles and i wouldnt tell somebody not to use them, but if i was building another big shafty rig i wouldnt hesitate to try the kyoshos.

I would vote twin axles because of the softer plastic. It just doesnt break under impact like tamiya plastic. Yes the stock aluminum diff ring and pinion is crap, but they make hardened steel aftermarket stuff.

Also, the twin takes buggy diffs as stated, and accepts Savage outdrives.

Over all, both will need some some work for a crawler, but IMO the twin axles build up stouter.

Ya know,I was just thinking,the aluminum ring and pinion are very weak. If you shim them up a little tighter they are pretty reliable though. My son is rougher on his Twin than I am on mine,he's bad for full throttle assults on near impossable obsticles. He is still running the stock gears locked solid spinning LST tires and has yet to hear the first pop. All we did was install a few shims to make the pinion gear mesh up tighter with the ring gear. You can get Kyosho shim packs for about 2 or 3 bucks. From what I've seen with his gears I probly could have gotten by with the factory gears running my Kongs if I would have shimmed them up tighter.

the plastic on xfactor axle is pretty stout stuff too, not like tamiya plastic.

Helical cut gears are for quietness not for strength. They build more heat and are just plain not as strong. The only diffrence in muncie m-21 4 spd and an m-22 4 spd is the cut of the gears. the mucie m-21 is alot stronger due to the cut of the gears being straighter but has alotta gear noise so they made the m-22 for aplications where less gear noise was desired. Also more 1:1 tranny tech for ya. Most people think the th400 is the strongest GM automatic tranny made but again it isn't. They made a version of the 400 called a th475 in limited numbers and it was even stronger due to the straight cut gears it used. The only advantage helical cut gears give is less noise.

Not true. Helical gears have superior load carrying capabilities compared to spur (or straight cut) gears. The “quietness” arises from the fact the tooth contact area is greater for the same amount of torque being transmitted. Straight cut gears will transfer more force since helical gears will waste some of the force “pushing” the gears sideways.
