View Full Version : Tundra-->Sequoia cc-01 build

Might as well start a thread. more a placeholder for the photos I currently have...slow build as I've started putting time into the Charity Montero Build again.
so this is what I am building.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/pantablo/Sequoia/2008-Sequoia-1.jpg
My plan is to take a Tundra cab and bed, combine them, build a back upper part and make my own SUV. The Sequoia is based on the Tundra running gear so it makes sense to me doing the same at 1:10.
I was expecting to split the cc-01 chassis transversely to stretch the wheel base to the Tundra's but upon further research I found that the Sequoia is not based on the Tundra double cab (tamiya's tundra is a double cab). So I'm going to have to take an inch out of the Tundra to make the sequoia which will leave me near the 10.5" lwb setting of the chassis.
I bought the chassis used, should have kept the new chassis from when I bought the pajero kit, d'oh. Had the chassis lift and clearanced the arms for more articulation up front already done.
I further modified it (as most of you have seen already) by turning the knuckles forward, adding a tie rod and relocating the steering servo into a more traditional over axle chassis mounted setup with a simple drag link to a knuckle.

no approach lost
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/pantablo/Sequoia/0003-2.jpg
Going to run the BFG Thrashes I made (BFG sidewalls, Mud Thrasher treads)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/pantablo/BFG-Thrashers/0007.jpg
The chassis is just about a runner (short a pinion) so I'll run my spare Range Rover Sport body on it for now.
(earlier picture, no Thrashers)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/pantablo/Sequoia/0001-1.jpg
Good tuck too.

will run a Novak 55t in it and possibly add a RC4WD 4:1 gear reduction unit.
has an old school Futaba esc (with built in 30A fuse, lol).
will possibly try making sliders and wheel arch exo for this one.
more later.

thanks guys. this should be fun.
That's some great work/thinking. Do you feel like you get better steering?
not sure on the steering yet as I'm missing a pinion, preventing me from driving it.
However, just moving the servo horn manually or grabbing the wheels and turning them manually there is minimal slop. there is a bit of bumpsteer on the non-drag linked side but its acceptable to me in exchange for the lack of slop.

I'll have to check the proportions but it appears I'll have to take 1" or slightly less out of the bed/cab junction and add some of it behind the rear wheel. the rear overhang is longer on the sequoia. If I fake the wheel base a bit (maybe less than 1/8") I can get it to work directly on the cc-01 chassis without adjusting the rear axle location.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/pantablo/Sequoia/0013.jpg
window sills will have to be reworked on rear two windows. rear pillar and rear glass will slope more forward, like the 1:1. The tamiya bed makes the proper transition from the body lines to the bubbled out fender so I'll cut the rear door away at the cab, about 7/8" and mate it with the front of the bed to keep the lines right. Sequoia rear taillight looks like same shape as headlight so I'll look at making the taillights out of headlights.
Can't seem to get the cc-01 chassis working right. problems with the pinion. first the set screw hit the gear when pinion placed in proper location. then got it to work but when I test the chassis outside it dies at first rock, as soon as it has to work against the rock to get the wheels moving up. I'm thinking this is a esc issue. after that it wont work unless I turn it off and on again. then too, the motor stops if I try to turn. am charging the battery again to eliminate that as a reason.
I say just make it a two door wagon. "thumbsup"

Usually I use Tenax 7R on styrene and that works fine on the ABS Tamiya bodies, but the Bondene works better between the styrene and ABS. it works really well on the tamiya bodies.

small update.
filled in the bumper and did some rough sanding/shaping. still have to detail the bumper (pad on top, reflector holes at corners, center cutout on bottom for hitch) but its almost there.

to this

also started on the window sills and preparing for the roof.
window sills needed to be cut out of the bed top, which was too high. got those cut out roughly and located the rear pillar. rear pillar still needs work, shaping and removal of top but its there...

Thanks for the compliment on the bike. Your new one looks great. I bet its a fun ride.
Since I sidetracked your thread I will see if I can get it back on topic. You are getting really good at modding these CC-01 chassis. I may have to try that steering set up on mine. The best mod I have done to mine is a belly pan to help it slide over stuff better.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j22/nascarkeith/Pajero/bottom.jpg
A lot of people try complicated stuff with moving links and things like that but a simple piece of scrap sheet metal and about 5 minutes with a dremel is all this took. Super easy and super effective.

Mostly the rear lower links and the big block of plastic up front that you cut away for your steering.

Its looking dang good if you ask me! Those fender flares are a great touch.
pantablo
04-28-2009, 12:43 PM
proportionally the tamiya is correct to the 1:1, ie the length of the door is about the same as the length of the front fender. the problem is that the A pillar is sloped farther back and goes higher proportionally. The C pillar is a little too far back proportionally in the same regard and moving the B pillar back will correct that. The 1:1 is a little longer from the rear wheel to back though. this will not be completely proportionally accurate to the 1:1 unfortunately. But neither is the Tamiya Tundra I started with...
anyway, it looks better on the chassis:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/pantablo/Sequoia/0033.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/pantablo/Sequoia/0034.jpg
I still need to reshape the tail light and lower the top 2mm or so. Also need to cut the shape of the rear window out of the tailgate and a slew of other small things. On to the roof and the right side pillars though, lol.
I like it, but still like the montero better. one possible option is that I sell this body and make a montero when I'm done. we'll see how I feel when I finish it.

pantablo
04-28-2009, 01:20 PM
I'm diggin it at the moment...
not sure on color but my first thougth was the charcoal I used on the rover/montero. could also go metallic dark red like the rover #1, pajero and the 1:1 pic behind sequoia above. I seem to be partial to that color...
I don't think anyone locally has a charcoal colored rig that I can remember so that might be the trick. black flares and tubework will look good against that too.

Update:
bonded the lower bumper to the top since the 1:1 sequoia has a one piece bumper. filled the gap with styrene as well. so far no filler. will try to limit filler to small surface scratches only.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/pantablo/Sequoia/0035.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/pantablo/Sequoia/0038.jpg
still a bit to do on it, especially around the middle lower opening. not sure I want to tackle the elongated openings at the corner lights. they're much bigger on the 1:10 than 1:1 so may leave it as is.
ah yes, here we go again...

started window sills too.

tundra body available through rpphobby.com. its too long for the cc-01 chassis. I took out a bit over an inch from the bed/cab combined and mated it perfectly to the long wb setting.

NICE! Your builds are all SO AWSOME!
is the tundra body the one off the highlift?
and how much would you have to stretch the wheelbase for just the normal tundra body to fit the cc-01

Sorry I missed this question. The blue jeep body is a crew cab pickup I made using two 1:12 scale Jeep Commander bodies made by Newbright.
You can see most of it here:

Yes, this was the Hilift Tundra body. If I recall the Tundra wheelbase is something like 11.5" (don't quote me though). So you'd have to stretch the cc-01 about an inch past the long wheel base setting. You should verify the Tundra wb though as I dont recall it off hand.
I mounted up the body temporarily and keep wanting to take it out with me when I've gone driving but without any glass (since the body is not done) I was worried about getting the internals wet since we've had a bunch of rain recently.
I'll try to take it out in the yard in the next few days for a short test run. Just from handling it though I think the panhard is not right.

Definitely need to rework the 4-link to eliminate the panhard. It was severely limiting articulation. need to drop the servo a bit too. Otherwise it ran great!

You know Pantablo, it has been a long time since we have seen anything on this truck. I know you are busy with the Styrene on the Fords but it would be nice if you could spare a little time for this one, I would love to see it done. :), man we need some more smiles on here.............there is no "poke".
