Well as I stated in my Axial build thread I am usually a little behind the times so I figured I would try and catch up with this build ;-)
Having watched some very impressive MOA setups dominate the HRCC and then see quite a few more added this season I figured it was the way to go.
The RC4WD Bully's always looked impressive but then seeing some of the issues with the early production runs I was hesitant?
I looked at Berg's but I guess the timing just was'nt right as I had other R/C's to spend money on :-P
Anyways after reading about the Bully's V3 axles being a good improvement over the previous versions I decided to make the leap and order a set of Bully Axle's "thumbsup"
Took around 2 weeks to get them in  But they do say Note: This is a special product #, please allow 4-8 business days to ship your order.
I think the packaging must take atleast a day :lol:

Ya thats is one thing RC4wd does very well. They pack everything like that...:) Took me 30min to run warp my wheels yesterday...

04-23-2009, 03:32 AM
First thoughts were that they feel Solid! Next was that they look even better in person ;-)
Original plan was to use the 2.2 Hustler I recently got from my Buddy Ronbeck "thumbsup" After getting some links made and mocking things up it was clear that I was not going to be able to use the Hustler :-(
Gearboxes are just a bit to wide ;-)

Yah the only other thing I had bought from them before this were some 1.9 MudSlingers and they were no where near packed this well
So I was going to use my MFM Black Widow :?: But had some concerns about it being a little to narrow:?: Went looking in the For Sale section and came across a KK 3.5 being sold by Desert Rc. PM'ed him but I was to late as he sold it already. But lucked out as he had a KK 4.0 so I picked that up from him! ThanX Again!
I did'nt have any 4" shocks so used the stock Axials to mock things up when I got the KK 4.0 in.
Link and shock clearance is at minimum with these axles ;-)

Wow, sounds like you have a collection of chassis stashed in your tool box. Good thing IMO"thumbsup".

I think with the V3's XVD's and now that the V4's are coming out (or out already) as well at the Titanium ones, the Bully's look to be a pretty good contender in the MOA market IMO ;-)
It is closer to be finished then this build thread is showing so far :?:;-)
I think the ride height with the Axial shocks was around 3.5"s or so? In it's current setup it is a little low at 2.5"s. I need to try and find some springs to get it around 3.0"s.
I picked up some Ace's Donuts (Mahalo's Rizzo) and also bought some Proline G8 Chisels. Had them before I had the Bully's :-P Man these things are Bumbucha's :lol: They are mounted on Proline 8-Shooters. They were chrome with silver rings but I painted them flat black.

Well wife decided not to go out today
So I got to messing around with the dig switch setup 8)
Used run2jeepn's diagram (last pic in post)
http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1745259&postcount=101
Was surprised that my Cheapo Soldering Iron was able to do the job without killing anything! :-(
The Hitec hs-55 I had works but it has a bit of sticking to it? It does'nt seem to be causing any issues as of yet?
I did change how I wired the motors up from how run2jeepn did his. He mentioned the rear motor was engaging before the front motor in his wiring setup so I did mine so the front motor was wired how he did his rear motor and the rear like his front.
Everything works (minus the small servo issue) It does seem like my rear motor goes faster then the front does? Could it be simply because the negative from the esc goes direct to the front motor? If so should I change to wire the negative from the esc to the rear motor so that the front goes faster?
Sorry no pics yet of the dig setup :-P
Here's some inspired by run2jeepn's pics ;-)
EDIT: Oh and his are better as his was with a ready to run rig :!:
run2jeepn
04-26-2009, 01:57 AM
Looks good. My problem I had was with the front motor. It had one too many shims in it. I tore it apart and took one shim out. works perfect now. The stall had nothing to do with the wiring it was all in the motor itself.
Might try switching your Motors front to rear. Then if your stalling moves with that motor. You know it's not your wiring and you just narrowed it down to the Motor. I had an extra motor and switched mine out. Which fixed. Thats when I tore into mine and removed a Shim.
Nice pic's...:) Now add both Motors, a 3 cell Lipo, a Steering Servo, two Switches, a dig Servo, ESC and the RX.....
This has got to be the stupidest thing...:)

If you are talking about run2jeepn's rig I would have to agree ;-) as is is ready to run. If your talking about mine I would say maybe :?:  as mine is empty :-P
Swapped the motors front to back and then found out that the motors are running the same. The cause for the difference in speed was the wheel/tire combo as the fronts are heavier then the rears. With the tires off the axles are turning at the same rate. The only issue now is that the rear axle did'nt seem to come with as much lube on them as the fronts did. This will be fixed as soon as I can get some lube ;-)
Hope to get it out on the rocks sometime this week? Next Comp is this coming Sunday already  And I would like to change my habit of taking a new rig that has never been run to a Comp :lol:

Well it finally got it's first run on the rocks today :) 8) "thumbsup"
It ran great and made some lines that I could'nt do with my other shafty rigs. And made some that the shafty's could but a little easier.
The Proline G8 Chisels and Ace's Donut's worked great to! They had great forward and side bite. And they sidehilled pretty good too!
The KK 4.0 with the GTR's worked better then I expected. I knew the KK 4.0 would work but was'nt sure how the GTR's would work with it. It could use a little more flex (need to get some JATO tan, orange or yellow? springs) But again it worked good.
Got my first experience with "Clod Stall":lol: It can throw you off a little but overall I don't think it will bother me to much :?:
I was glad to see the 55t lathes still had some pretty good wheelspeed. Ofcourse you always want more right ;-)

Had my first comp with the Bully's yesterday!
Truck ran good! The driver on the other hand was a little iffy :roll::lol:
1st course was brutal  2nd course was challenging but realistic ;-) If not for a couple of fuzzy tennis ball halves I would have done better :-P :ror:
My personal goal was to make the Top 10 as that would allow me to run the final course and I did with a 4 way tie for 8th. But they ran only the Top 6 in the Finals
The Bully's performed great though! No breakage or even loose screws (yup I did'nt thread lock everything yet :-P ) Got in a couple of binds and was able to power out of them with no issues.
Overall the Bully's/KK4.0 ran well. And had a great time haning out and crawling with the HRCC Crew 8)"thumbsup"
Going to drill out the GTR shock pistons to free them up a bit. Hoping this will allow me to still run the springs that I have now? Need to pick up some springs and brushes for the 55t motors.
Oh and I picked up a set of Eritex adjustable off-set wheels from SicksAreR "thumbsup" Running them in wide off-set in the front and a narrow off-set in the rear. I mounted the center hub behind the wheel mounting area so that they were a little wider then the narrow off-set as that was to narrow for the Bully's.
Sorry but no pics from the Comp. Was a little under the weather and out of it
Xtant3150c
05-11-2009, 11:51 PM
Got the pistons drilled out, but have'nt been able to get softer springs yet.
Took it out for a short run today and found out fast that I now need to run a heavier oil :lol:
The shocks felt pretty good on the workbench, but out on the rocks they were just to soft. In a bind the truck would flop around like a stock Axial :lol:
The truck did'nt run as good as it did at the comp but I think a thicker oil should get it back in shape.
One issue that came up today was that the adjustment collar on the front shocks are being adjusted by the front tires :lol: This was only an issue today because I ran the collars higher up on the shocks (have the top mounted on the axle and bottom on the chassis) with the drilled out pistons and softer feeling shocks I wanted to see if I could get a little higher center clearance. This put the collars in just the right spot I guess for the tires to turn them when ever they made contact.
I ended up putting the collars back to the highest position so this would'nt be an issue. But I'll have to figure something out once I change springs.
I am not sure if I like running wheels with breather holes? I never did this before and never felt that it was an issue for the tires/foams I ran before. I ran them this way at the comp and they worked o.k. but seem to get bound up to easy in situations that did'nt look like they would be a problem?
I may try and plug the holes in the Eritex's so I can see how the Chisel's will work this way?
Still need to pickup some loctite  But did'nt have any issues at the Comp and today only a king-pin screw came out. And this screw was loctite!:lol:
I did read another thread that had an issue with the king-pin screw coming loose or the hole being stripped out but can't remember if it was an issue with the axle housing or not?
Anyways I'll get some loctite this week and get things tightened up.

Got the Proline Bug Body mounted yesterday 8) I really don't understand why Proline even puts the fenders on it :? I don't see any way to actually run the body with the fenders on without it being Jacked Up in the air
Also got the Punk R/C dig switch mounted and wired up "thumbsup" Really cleaned up the wiring.
Hope to get the body painted and get it out on the rocks this week :?:

O.K. here is a little more from the run today.
I could'nt find any 100wt. oil locally so I decided to try and mix some 5000wt. diff lube and the 30wt. oil in the shocks. I went with a 50/50 blend. The softer JATO springs (yellow/orange) work alot better then the JATO blues I had been running. The shocks felt good with the oil blend but they still felt to move a little to quickly? I think I may try running just 5000wt.?
Truck made a couple of climbs a little easier then it was with the previous setup.
The Bug body definately had more clearance then the Rockstar. I was'nt sure if I was going to like the look of it on the Rocks but after today I do ;-)
Overall was a good 30 minutes of running the rig and still finding myself smiling while driving it "thumbsup"

I love the Traxxas GTR shocks :!: I have run them in a bunch of different rigs (K2-3L w/TLT's, MFM Black Widow w/TLT's & Axial's and Hustler w/TLT's) and they have performed very good everytime.
Drilling out the pistons really freed their movement up thus the need for a thicker oil now.
The Pink springs are actually the 2nd stiffest springs. The Yellow's are the softest and Orange is the 2nd softest. I actually used the Blue's (stiffest springs) on the rigs I listed above and they worked good but I like them better with the softer springs now.
Yah I need to try and get some video of this thing.

I got a pm from someone asking about the upper links. The fronts are 4 3/4" eye to eye and the rears are 5 1/4" eye to eye. The rears have about a 1/2" - 5/8" bend in them the bend starts at 2 1/4" from the eye of the rod end. Sorry but I did'nt measure the links before doing the bend

A couple more questions. On your lower links you have a standoff on those also that appears to be metal. Is it just an extra revo rod end swivel ball?
I see that you used the Axial chassis cross bars. Is your chassis bent outward at the top? The reason I ask is because the skid is 51MM and the axial cross bar is 56mm when I mocked that up the cross bars were to wide for the KK chassis.
Thanks for your help

Yes the stand off on the lower link axle mount is a REVO ball stud. You could use the same 5mm Axial spacer I used for the lower shock mount or use REVO ball studs for both the link and shock mounts.
Yes the chassis is only about 2mm wider at the cross braces compared to the center/skid area. Atleast on my chassis.

Xtant thanks for the info! I am getting ready to start my own bully as soon as the rest of my parts show up this week which will use the same chassis as yours. It is my first MOA build so I am very anxious to get started. I definately am going to use some of your research to complete it.
Knowing that someone was going from an Axial(started that way at least) to a bully can you think of anything I really should know that you have not already posted?
Did you find any challenges that needed to be really thought out?
Any insight you can provide is greatly appreciated.:)

No Problem Man "thumbsup"
Well I know I am not the best person to answer this question, but one thing I can say is get it out on the rocks and drive it! It is definately different from driving a Shafty as most anyone will tell you. So the best thing to do is get as much wheeltime with it as you can. I should take my own advice here as I don't drive my rig nearly as much as I would like  :ror:
A couple of things I still need to do is get softer brushes and harder springs for the 55t motors. It is supposed to help with the drag brake of the motors.
If your going with the KK 4.0 and Bully's it is a pretty straight forward deal. The upper links were the only thing I had to think about and all I really did was checkout Kamikaze KK Berg build to get a general idea of upper link length and position.
Shocks are a personal preference. I went with the Traxxas GTR's because they were 3.5" and that is what Kamikaze was running on his KK 4.0 Berg setup.
Are you going to run a standard Micro Switch Dig setup or a Punk R/C Dig? If you go Micro Switch be sure to figure out where you want it mounted in the chassis. If you can afford to go with a Punk R/C I think it is money well spent! A Cleaner setup and very dependable.
That's about all I can think of? Don't hesitate to ask any questions here or to any of the other Bullly Owners out there.
Have Fun!

The upper links are the only thing that is not currently on its way to my house. I was just planning on making my own to fit once everything else is mocked up.
I was going with the Losi 4 inch shocks since I have 3 sets on my parts shelf. I was contemplating going slightly shorter but will see after I try the 4 inch ones.
Instead of the punk dig I am going with 2 Tekin FXR's and 2 HH 45t motors. I use the Futaba 4pk so this seemed like the best option for control due to the throttle mixing available on it.
Again let me thank you for your help.

You can add a thin (3/8 - 1/2) slice of non memory foam to the outside edge to keep them from rolling over like that. Its cheap and normally doesnt effect the rest of your setup much.

I run rc18 gold springs as internals in the GTR shocks. It frees up some room on the outside of the shock body, and it's a nice cheap spring. If you want even softer, try the silvers... but I prefer the golds.

Currently, I'm using stock oil, but I did not drill out the pistons. It seems to work well with the softer spring. You might need a bit heavier weight oil with drilled pistons, though.

Not owning a Shafty the only thing I could try it on was the Bully's?
So I took one of the KK4.0 side plates and drilled some new holes in the boulder for link and skid mounts.

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9397/boulder8.jpg (http://img6.imageshack.us/my.php?image=boulder8.jpg)
It look good, but would have some clearance issues with the front cross brace (unfortunately the chassis did not come with any?) The KK link setup and the Boulder's shock mounting location ended up pushing the wb a little pass 12.5" I think mainly because the links are mounted on the outside of the chassis. I was also thinking about using my TCS AX-10 skid but that is currently in use on my Clod Racer ;) With the AX-10 skid and if I had cross braces I am pretty sure I would be able to use the Boulder and also use all the panels. With the KK skid I would have to make new narrower roof, rear section and center section panels.
So for now the Bully's are back with the KK4.0 "thumbsup"If I can get some cheap cross braces I may give it another go?
